PS5 Doesn't Feature Xbox Series X/S-Style Quick Resume Game Swapping (Gamespot)

Do people not realize that MS could easily add cars functionality via OS update? Just like Sony added trophies in the middle of the PS3 generation to copy MS? The ground work with developers has already been done by Sony. All MS would have to do is implement the same functionality which honestly doesn't appear to be that complex.

Why would I be disappointed? Especially coming off of 30 seconds to even a minute long loading times from last gen.

I feel you're really understating just how incredibly quick it is to jump between games on PS5.

Ahhh. I feel like I've somehow missed this in the various video reviews of the PS5 I've seen.

This needs more attention.

Again, launching games again is not the same as quick resume. There’s no amount of activity cards that can put me directly back into 1:26 in lap 15 of a 18 lap race in the 3rd race of a championship in a racing game.

Fast loading is nice. Quick resume is amazing.

Yes and seeing people desperately trying to pretend Quick Resume isn't a great feature (although hardly essential) is, well, not convincing.

quick resume is great. But given my experience with the console so far, ps5 is fine without it. if Sony add it to the OS, it’s cool too. Bottom line. not a deal breaker.

If I were a developer I would use the "card" functionality and throw in "quicksave resume" as the first card.

That being said - I would not take quickresume at the cost of any additional hard drive space... And in the games Ive played so far I am not missing it. Perhaps it will wear off... But the thing feels snappy and I definitely do not feel like I am waiting for anything .

It doesn't? When I sign into PS5, I press Demon's Souls and it picks up where I left off without loading the game?

I press a card and it loads a different part of the level instantly. I don't get the outcry?

Load another game, then go back to demons souls. see the difference?

Yeah, I get it, it's not a multi-game quick resume. It's such a minor inconvenience. I'd take the card system over a quick resume personally. It puts me into the parts of the levels I want instead of just the start of the game.

I personally don't care if PS5 ever gets it.
You’d take a bunch of preselected checkpoints things over being able to essentially run 5 games concurrently?

“yikes”. You’re assuming that the cards are all going to be exactly what you want them to be, but that’s not going to be true. Unless there are hundreds or thousands of cards per game then you’re severely restricted, and if there were then it becomes unwieldy.

Do you have ADHD? Play a game and finish it. A quick resume on 20,000 games is not a make or break feature. I'd take the card system over a multi-quick resume.

Lol so someone that doesn’t just play a single game through from start to completion has ADHD now? Jesus Christ lol. Grow up, making yourself look like a child with comments like that.

What exactly are you guys using the cards for in your beloved cinematic linear single player games that you play from start to finish without touching another game? I can be playing a single player campaign and then accept a online multiplayer invite in another game and just go straight there, play online for an hour, then switch back and literally be back at the same exact millisecond that I was at in the single player game. Cards don’t have shit on that.

The quick resume is a cool feature and all, but who really plays 6 games at the same time? Also, couldn’t that feature be patched in later on the PS5?
I'll give you a concrete example.

I've been playing Legion lately, I'm mid mission. Then I notice that Gamepass has just added remastered versions of Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango. They've also just added EA play, so there's a whole other bunch of games that I haven't played. Under the current system if I try any of those out of curiosity, then I lose my spot in Legion and have to cold boot the game. That's a pain in the butt.

With multiple game resume I could try the remasters for a few minutes and maybe play a quick game of Fifa 20 to check it out. Then I can resume my play-through of Legion at the precise second at which I left off. What's more, all of those other games would be there waiting for me to resume in the exact same spot when their turn eventually comes.

It's a handy, handy feature.

Thinking about it, I wonder if you can expand your "quick resume" allotment if you use the official seagate expansion ssd. 🤔

It would be pretty cool to be able to keep adding more quick resume room, as well as “lock” certain games in quick resume so you can’t accidentally open too many other games and lose its spot. Hopefully they expand on the functionality.

I rather have the ssd space available to my games. I think it's a neat feature but I'm concerned at the wear on the nand of the internal ssd. Imagine every time I use the QR the system write anything from 8 to 16gb in the ssd per game so to save it state. I think I prefer the Sony idea.

It's a quite nice feature. Even though I only play 1 game per session, usually, but sometimes I switch to another game on following day, depending on the mood - and its been quite helpful.

I also thought I wouldn't use it - but quick resume and game pass really works well in hand-in-hand. By default, when on game pass - you want to play as many games you'd like - so it works out quite well. Wish PS5 could implement same feature in the future.

Also while I was installing PS5, I unplugged XSX entirely for a day. Quick resume status didn’t disappear - and that was really amazing.

Sometimes I get brief power outages like half a second, and my old PS4 pro had to go thru extensive system check before it resume if such surge happened during rest mode. Also lost the any progress up to that point lost, unlike XSX’s quick resume.

The ssd in the series x actually has more space than the hdd in the Xbox one x. So it's not as if space has been lost from the previous console.

You just made me realize how fucking awesome QR would be in Gran Turismo's 12/24h races...

Lol but opening a game from scratch is still going to dump whatever is in memory and read from the ssd again.

Cold Boot just reads Nand, doesn't write. Nand wear occurs when writing data.
Ps5 doesn't dump data when Boot a game, it just clear the System Ram.

When your system has no exclusive titles you have to do marketing on features. Frankly can't really care about quick resume, understand it makes sense in the fast food like gaming paradigm they are trying to push with Gamepass though.

The space could be available for games and is not. I'm not comparing it to anything. I think it's a cool feature, I just wish we have the option to adjust how much memory it uses or even turn it off.

So when you start a game up on the PS5 it doesn’t write Nand? So nothing ever writes to it, just reads.....interesting lol.

Microsoft let you store games on external drives, so this is a non issue.

1-It writes during game instalation, saving data. The QR feature just happens to be much larger than save games. The ssd wear is a problem on ps5 too, I'm not saying this is a Xbox problem.

2-I don't think it's a issue, like I said, I wish I have the space available for games, like a option, so you decide how to use your Ssd.
It is a great feature and I probably use it sparsely, but not always and I rather have the option.

You keep repeating that as if I've been making that argument, even though I've already clarified the difference lol.

The only real difference here is that quick resume lets you keep your exact spot, which is indeed pretty cool. Although I wouldn't call it any faster for jumping between games, as it still requires navigation through a menu and very brief loading between games, much like PS5 cards.

Games autosave frequently, and now load extremely quick. So even if you have to work 48+ hours a week or have family responsibilities as you've put it, you're still saving an incredible amount of time in the long term jumping between games. You're still waiting only several seconds either way.

I guess it just comes down to a difference between playing habits. Whether you're the type of player who sticks to one or two titles to completion. Or you have a tendency of dipping in and out multiple titles in the same gaming session.
Also if you frequently like to play online competitive titles, keeping your exact spot wouldn't even be possible.

This is one of those features I've never really bothered using as I've always had weird experiences resuming a game that had been idled for hours.

Whenever I exit a game I completely close it out.

Kind of weird to compare features like these, it is not like they are anything remotely essential after all.

If gamer have only ps5 or xsex = why would they have to care if system B have more of this or less of that?

It is like people would say "yeah but on PC we can have icons on desktop and click them faster!"

good for them, but it is still nothing essential.

1 game in "quick resume" is enough for most people, and next gen games load so fast anyway that who can honestly claim that their life is saved/ruined, if it takes few seconds less or more to switch games?

Switching discs already takes more time and any smart (and not rich) gamer uses physical games as they can be sold/lent + cheaper on launch when using almost new ones as used from online sites

When will you get it into your mind, that regardless of using a disc or playing only one game quick resume is a great feature. Only play one game at a time, great, you will always be exactly where you left off even after console updates and turning the console off. Only use physical media? Great, pop the disc in and you are back where you left off without having to load up a save or go through splash screens.

I keep repeating it because people like you still don’t seem to understand.

It is much faster jumping between games that are in quick resume because no, it doesn’t require you jumping through menus and loading between games like ps5 cards. This again shows that you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what quick resume is.

Think of it like this, I’ll try dumb it down to the simplest it can get with an example no one should be able to misunderstand.

Netflix.......

Do you ever stop watching a movie or tv show mid way though?

Netflix have quick resume. You can start watching 5 different movies and quit out of them mid way through, at any second, and then can pick up right where you left off instantly another day. That’s the Xbox.

If it was like the PS5, you wouldn’t be able to do that, instead you would have to flick through all the cards to find one closest to where you think you were in the movie. There might be a card to resume playback At every 10 minute interval. The problem is if you stopped watching at 28:35 then you have to either watch from 20 or 30.

Would you be on here arguing that the “card” system is better then, like you are now? No, you wouldn’t, because the card system is clearly worse.

It has nothing to do with how many games you play in one session on one day. I can start a game today, pause mid race, and then not play that game for another month but then pick up exactly where I left it. It’s amazing that you still keep trying to downplay this just because your console of choice doesn’t have it.

Wdym I have several games I juggle all the time. The ability to always have them ready to go when I feel like it and remembers where I was is a game changer.

been switching between Jedi fallen order and warzone recently and it’s such a chore. This is a big deal for someone like me
