[NPD] Nintendo Switch sells 735,926 units in the U.S. in October, second-highest October ever for a home console

Meanwhile in Japan, Nintendo Switch sold around 350K in Oct.

In Europe, Nintendo Switch sales up 77% YoY vs 2019 in Oct.
Calculation by Ree poster
"At the very least, that's 600k+ units sold through in October in the EMEA region, possibly closer to 650k+"

Hyper impressive Nintendo, US, EU, and Japan already accounted nearly 2 million units of hardware and it's probably over 2 million units in October alone.

When this dropped, another record will be shattered.

Excellent performance.

I'm embarrassed by my posts around January 2017, where I confidently predicted it would struggle to surpass Wii U numbers.

Nothing more admirable than when someone can admit they were wrong.

I loved the console when they revealed it, but I assumed it was doomed too due to the price. It was way too fucking high. And the Joycons? Fuck that, no one is going to buy them at that price, I said. How wrong I was.

It's easily matching the Wii, it will end up 3rd of all time I think behind PS2 and DS

Anyway.... sweet jesus those numbers!!!!

And we still the most anticipated sequel in the entire industry coming probably next November for it in BOTW 2!

Numbers are going crazy like the Wii, but the switch has a better attach rate. The Wii sold well but most of the people only played Wii sports and didn’t buy many other games.

The Wii had at times a higher attachment rate than people give credit for. People just kept discrediting some games on the best sellers list.

But congrats to them and hopefully they up their output on games this coming year. Still waiting on Mario strikers 🤐.

See that's my only issue as a switch owner. Nintendo has been coasting and their game outpu has been rather sparce.

Tie ratio after the first 15 quarters on the market (NSW latest known quarter is the 15th)
Wii: 7.30
NSW: 6.68

Digital only games are excluded from the software counting.

if it wasn't for supply constraints anyone else think the switches sales in this year alone could eclipse the wiiu's entire worldwide total?

Should be a fun few months ahead, wonder how Sony and Microsoft spin their launches if Nintendo ends up outselling them both combined during the holiday quarter.

Sony has completely conceded Japan, China, South Korea, and SEA to Nintendo, this will have ramifications for Asian 3rd Party support going forward - which might impact the differentiator Sony has had over Microsoft for many years.

Who would have thought that after the Wii U, Nintendo could make a turn around like this... oh wait

I'd be positively surprised if the battery life is more than 3-4 hours. I'm expecting a slightly better Battery life than the GamePad.

To me it seems that Switch is an attempt to grow the 3ds user-base in Japan by attempting to not only consolidate the Nintendo gaming divisions but also provide mobile gaming for 3rd parties who've so far not had much success in Japan due to that market ignoring consoles in favor of mobiles/handhelds.
I can totally see a lot of 3rd party devs being excited about easily porting their games to a device where there is a chance to sell a million to the Japanese market. With Switch possibly having some type of mobile game/app integration - devs can utilize mobile apps/games to advertise to the mobile market.

I think the 3rd party support geared towards the Switch would be based on how well it does in Japan. If Splatoon/Pokemon/DQ/YW/MK etc are able to get this device to sell at a faster pace than 3ds/wii u combined - it will make the device too attractive to not port towards.
I think Switch is a demonstration of Nintendo trying to focus on their largest market while providing a device that would be attractive to current WiiU/3DS owners. Can't say it will have mass market appeal in the West but it does seem to me that it can be a device that sells north of 20 million in Japan.

Splatoon is going to be released before or during the summer holidays in Japan. Even August would be late for such it's release date. It will easily sell over a million before the summer is over and the quieter months for family titles arrive. I personally expect it to release 2 years from the original with detailed future updates until December and indefinite free support. This is how they will get parents of kids in Japan to buy into their online sub - especially if parental controls are a staple of the system.
I think it would be best if the sub service to be based on household and multiple Switch devices to use the same sub - this specifically because any other sub system wouldn't make sense if you want to sell over 20 million Switch devices in Japan. If the online is overpriced I think Japan will reject this so keeping it affordable is a key component for families there. With the expansion of local lan there is obviously alternatives in Japan as well.

It's a question if by consolidating 3DS/Wii U in Japan and using their IPs in anime, movies, theme parks, mobile games and apps will bring a temporary return of the Japanese market. Demographics in Japan are pretty bleak so the Switch might be the last opportunity for any dedicated video game device to sell over 20 million there. I think Splatoon 2 being launched in the first year is the thing that might help this but we shall see. In any case I don't know about the west but at least in Japan the Switch should do better than the PS3/Wii or Wii U if it doesn't everything there has gone mobile. For reference Wii 13 mil and PS3 sold 12 mil. The Hybird is very much a replacement for the 3DS/Wii U combo and it's priced slightly better in Japan than anywhere else.
Also it's not a coincidence that Splatoon 2 and MK8 are leading the way on the Switch after Zelda. One is a system seller and moved 1.5 million Wii Us(in Japan only) with only SMM to back it up. The other is the biggest game they had on the Wii U for every other region.

I'm glad I was wrong. Love the Switch, and have every Nintendo console except the Virtual Boy. But I didn't think it had a cat in hell's chance.

Hope it's got at least a couple more years on life in it yet.

If they deliver enough machines to the shops they will have 10+ millions year. But I guess I shouldn't be suprised even I bough one this year :D

"home console" isnt correct.

Hybrid is a different segment and it is basically handheld with TV out, and if this includes lite sales too, that is definitely a handheld

Good thing to Nintendo, but IMO it is not correct to compare it to real home consoles, it should be compared to handheld or handheld + wii combo etc.

Because if target audience is "nintendo home console + handheld gamers" then comparing it to only one of them makes it wrong.

Wii+3ds saled combined would be more interesting, because if switch still sells more than 2 devices combined, then it is crazy

It is not a home console. Switch the handheld is selling, not Switch the console. Going forward, Nintendo will never ever release a console without “handheld” features, because they know it’s the handheld not the console that is the main attraction.
If they ever release a pure stand alone console like PS5, they are done for. It will be a Wii U dejavu.

Ok decent point.

When comparing Switch to PS4, let's add on Vita's numbers to make it fair.

LOL. The best part of any Nintendo sales thread is the desperate screeching about why it shouldn't count. :)

I don't even know why they bother.

"If you count PS4 and Vita combined Sony still wins".

OK. LOL.

I always wonder what these folks are like when a new console launches. So you get your pre order and a week later you've finished the one good launch title. Then you hear a noise from next door. Holy shit! The neighbours are playing Mario Kart 8 and... sounds like... HAVING Fun! Reeeeeeeeeeee! Don't they know its just a Wii U port! It only has kiddy graphics and isn't even 4K! Reeeeeeee!

There were a lot of us who were unimpressed with what Nintendo had revealed back then. Little did we know...

Agreed.

PS4+PSV ltd = 36.56 million units.
NSW ltd = 22.57 million units.

So it's going to take around ~1.5 year for NSW to pass those numbers in the US.

I agree. But I have hope, because these internal teams are working anyway. Something is being prepared.

The longer a game stays in development, the more there will be to it eventually. And these teams aren't taking a vacation. They're still getting a pay check, so they've gotta be working on something.

We'll see the fruits of their labor soon, I hope.

Remember when GAF predicted the Vita would obliterate the 3DS, and the Switch would be Wii U levels of bomba?

Fun times.
