In a recent interview with AV Watch, Sony Interactive Entertainment Vice President Hideaki Nishino confirms the PS4-to-PS5 transition period should last around 3 years. During that time Sony will release a mix of next-gen exclusives and cross-gen releases

"The current assumption is that the transition from PS4 to PS5 will take about three years. In the meantime, how can I keep buying games on PS4? Can the purchased games be played on PS5? That is important. At a certain time, we ask developers to develop on the premise of "cross generation" of PS4 and PS5. Of course, we also need to improve the library to make it easier."

Gamers are goldfish confirmed.

Every generation Sony does this. Every generation.

The PS1 was on sale for well over 2000 years. Even Jesus had one.
The PS2 was on sale well in to the life of the PS3.
PS3 games were coming out well in to the life of the PS4.
They're still bring out Vita games.

But nahh. Let's get out hot-off-the-press quips of "buh generations" in to boost the reaction score.

That’s would be fine if they gave their main developers free reigns to make a next gen version and hire other studios for the downports. But I don’t expect that to happen.

Oh well. I’m sure they will be excellent games either way and I can’t blame Sony for wanting to support a user base of 110+ million.

Who cares? I'd rather play MM, GOW and FW on the ps5. It's going to be the much better version. It's sad to see xbox fans in here celebrating when xbox is launching with zero games, and it will be 2-3 years before anything good comes. Kettle............. black.

The likes of 'CatLady' seem to spend their entire lives liking any positive Xbox posts, and anything negative about Playstation.

It's absolutely fucking pathetic.

On topic, I guess God of War will be a big test of this strategy. I already half expected GT7 to be cross gen tbh, because it looks like a fairly gentle evolution from GT Sport.

Ryan doesn't believe in generations anymore :/

I’m glad, those games running on PS4 means, 60fps option for PS5

Well who knows, maybe this generation will be the turning point, where after a few years af finally experiencing 60-120FPS, console gamers will finally realize how much better it is, and demand it from the devs going forward, instead of saying that 30 is enough.

I doubt first party games would support PS4 all the way to 2022. I can see third party keep supporting old platforms for profit, but console manufacturers must push forward to sell their newest products.

That's fine with me. Most of these games are so expensive that developers want to keep them on as many platforms as possible. Most of these next gen games will be current gen games with a few bells and whistles like ray tracing

I'm cool with sticking with the current gen, especially since games will be 10 bucks cheaper

To me this sounds like he's talking about third-party support for the 3 year period of cross gen. If that's the case, and the next first party games (after launch window) are going to be PS5 only, then that's how previous generations have been with the support for the console in their end of life.

Yup, it's pretty sad. We already have next gen only games and I'm sure there will be many more coming.

It would be fantastic if GOW was next gen only, but after seeing MM on ps5 I'm not too bothered if it's not. These are world class studios who will push the ps5 version.
No company leaves behind around a 100 million paying customers.

well this was a no brainer, how long did it take for third party devs to drop the 360/ps3?

Just because some games will be cross-gen (which is a given), doesn’t mean all will be. Demon souls isn’t on the PS4.

Possible, Only time will tell.

If this is how it’s going to be, can everyone just put out a Series S with their main console? Seems a better compromise than games on your platform being arbitrarily limited for three years.

Of course, Microsoft somehow managed to do the worst of both worlds.
You just had to bring Microsoft into it, didn’t you?

Anyway to the topic at hand. Anyone who believed the fluff about only supporting next gen should’ve seen the writing on the wall. There’s too much money to be left behind especially in an age where the competition (Xbox) is producing stellar support for BC with no extra charge and Gamepass that goes hand in hand with it.

There’s a reason they made the PlayStation+ Collection and a reason they’ve made an effort to do their own BC thing. Did they make that effort on the PS4? No because they didn’t need to, they were ahead and momentum was there to not need it.

People should’ve been expecting this. at least the competition was upfront about it.

Interested to see how first party games are going to look. Just kept at the level they got now just 4K/60 or 30 with ray tracing on ps5.

People forget the first big expensive AAA from Sony was Uncharted 4 in 2016, almost 2.5 years after. Bloodborne and Order was 1.5 years.

No way Sony is releasing Spider-Man, Horizon 2, God of War and GT7 in less 1 year from launch exclusively to PS5

Insomniac confirmed just a few days ago that Ratchet will be PS5 exclusive. That's slated for first half of 2021.
