Assassin's Creed Valhalla runs at dynamic 4k in Series X after all (says producer)

I think the PS5 version is under embargo, so they'll probably wait to compare directly.

How dare he remind people my favourite plastic box is missing a feature it was advertised as having. Let's cancel him.
Just image if VRR will magically appear on ps5 via firmware update...oh and you talk about defend the favourite plastic box for missing feature. Mmm.

luckily I have a freesync monitor

This seems so weird to me. So does the game not have vsync on as default?. There are loads of vids of the XSX version without screen tearing. I have even been watching Gameriot's playthrough, which he started before the day one patch -

No scren tearing from what i can see.
I hope they dont go all in on this VRR stuff, and ignore poeple without compatible tv's.

EDIT. Actually i did see a tear at 1:20. It seems like the game uses adaptive vsync, where vsync is on, but if the framerate drops below 60fps, vsync turns off. This was the preview version though, before the day one patch.

Still there is a difference between upscaled 4k (which means it never runs at native 4k) and dynamic 4k (which means it can also reach native 4k).
In the end it will be minor differences. Both consoles are in a spot where the power-difference is noticeable on paper, but not really visually.

But the games has really technical issues. Even when running with a locked 30fps it tears like hell (tested yesterday on my xb1x). And as sony doesn't release a VRR update for my xh9005 (x900h) I don't think I will really see a difference to the tearing-problem on my xbsx tonight.
Heck, even the 120fps mode on the TV is only made for the PS5 according to sonys support. So I guess I have to wait for patches from Ubi and sony to play the game "tearless".

Seems to be mainly cutscenes on Series X that tear, gameplay is fine. One X looks like it suffers badly, needs more aggressive scaling probably.

Easily done, surprised it wasn't added until now, but I'm sure it'll come eventually.
It's not surprising, 8k support still lack. But honestly if even VRR it's not a thing fuck that if it means to have perfomance issue without it. It's a total bullshit for the customer if this will become an excuse to sacrifice perfomance optimization otherwise.

I don't know why John said that I have watched playthrough videos too and I have not seen any dip or screen tearing.

edit: I watched the video, and there is some screen tearing

So far, yes. So it will run VSYNC internally instead of throwing it on the minority of TV's that support VRR. When it comes, it should be optional as well when implemented instead of not having VSYNC. The majority of gamers need VSYNC.
They better include that option ASAP. I recently upgraded to TV with Gsync and it's by far the biggest next-gen upgrade for me. I think it made a bigger difference than going from 2080Ti to 3080. It's that good.

Indeed, they're mostly finalizing it for XH90 as that one as well waiting for the VRR update. But I doubt they'll support G-Sync, at best open source Freesync or just HDMI open-source VRR. I think VSYNC needs GPU/CPU or either to do it internally for nearly the same result vs throwing it on the TV/monitor. Could improve fps when processed via VRR on the TV.

Yeah, I only mentioned Gsync because that's what I'm using. Bottom line is: people really need to start upgrading their TVs. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I love that feature. All my life I locked the framerate to display refresh rate. In most cases that leaves GPU power under-utilized. Since I got CX I play every game with uncapped frames and it's just so, so much better. I played Mafia 3 (shitty game, I know) yesterday and it the entire experience was just more enjoyable at 80+ frames. Aiming, shooting, driving... everything. Higher frames is what next-gen should really be about.

99% of people don't have a VRR compatible TV, so it means nothing. You can't say a game runs great because of VRR
Well, yes and no.... People will still talk about it, some may think it could make the console age better if they ever get a new tv, etc. But it hard to see people who already got a 4k TV not to long ago upgrade for this.

What?! Does he mean Valhalla?
That's bad news...
I expect screen tearing to be a very real thing early gen this time around. With the push to higher unlocked framerates it was inevitable.

Hope developers get this corrected though. For a title that has dynamic resolution, there is no excuse for not locking that framerate. Nothing makes a game unplayable faster than screen tearing for me.

99% of you sit too far back from your tv to even really fully benefit from native 4K anyways. The fact is I guarantee most wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between dynamic 4K vs native 4K especially in motion. Native 4K is a waste of resources on both consoles. Honestly I wished all games used dynamic resolutions to keep FPS rock solid.

Yeah, in my experience even the recommended viewing distances slightly understate how close you need to be to really appreciate 4K.

It needs to be about a 1:1 ratio of distance to screen size. I've managed to rearrange things to finally get about that far from my 55" tv and only now can I finally say that 4k is really worth it.

The reality is for most living rooms you're going to want AT LEAST a 65" screen and probably more like 75".

And even then, at a 1:1 ratio 1440p still looks very decent. I seriously doubt I could tell the difference between native and dynamic, or native and something like 1800p.

It's just not worth it.

Source: trust me bro

Source: my eyes, if you can't see that cutscene is not 60fps, you don't need analysis, you can play any game you want. Probably is a video and not rendering on real time, but that cinematic is not 60fps.

Who cares?

I guess the same ones who tried to create the narrative that PS5 couldn't do both 4k and 60fps at the same time and then that only XSX was native 4K and made threads about it that reached 10 pages?
Basically both things got debunked since they're both dynamic 4K, no ray tracing and 60fps(with dips it seems). I guess those people not only care but right now are very disappointed :p

Minute 7:18, the game clearly is performing around 30-40fps, yo can see the drop of performance on the cutscene and the analysis is 60fps, lol. Unless this is a cinematic video at 30fps

Yes it's 30fps for cutscenes, as it looks. That's not even 40fps.

That's cool. We will still get to find out the SX and the PS5's average resolution while running this game. Hiding behind "up to 4K" means nothing.

If the screen tearing is real, holy shit. Doesn't matter if one console supports VRR or not, since basically most TV won't support it. That's pretty bad for Ubisoft, why are they lagging so far behind other big publishers?

Don't see much problem with dynamic 4k TBH, as long as the upscaler is good enough and the resolution does not drop that much to be noticeable.

The console isn't even released yet. Why not wait till it releases because their might be an update that enables some missing features?
So what 8K games do you plan on playing on what 8K tv?

I wonder what Dealer will have to say about that eh?

If this is the case how on earth can xbox claim it 'plays best on xbox series x'....

Tearing, dips, no next gen controller experience.

More bizarre claims coming back to bite them?
Because series X has VRR.......

You think the PS5 version won’t have the dips and tearing? Lol oh boy. The PS5 doesn’t have VRR to fix the problems like the Xbox does.

I enjoyed Mafia 2's open world more than any other similar game.. the soundtrack helped too.. was turned off m3 by reviews... But as with Andromeda maybe you'll sway my opinion xP I'll keep an eye out for a sale..

All this bullshit with patches, resolutions and framerates makes me wonder why developers won't start including graphics settings like on PC.
Make a default preset that's recommended for here and now but let people make adjustments. It makes your game future proof.

I thought about that too but it opens up such a can of worms. How do you QA for future machines/architecture? What if it introduces bugs or breaks the game. Your going to have to spend significant resources/budget on something well out of the games sales period that very few players will see.

While I wish there was something like this I can see why developers/publishers would be hesistant.

Why doesn't the PS5 have VRR? I thought that was an HDMI 2.1 standard. Did I miss something?
