PS5 doesn't let you store PS5 games on external HDD

I know that Sony clearly stated that you won't be able to do this, it's clearly written, but people are pretending they tricked us and they kept it hidden under NDA and these persons are now forwarding all these disingenuous takes.....

Well sadly gaming is taking a turn to digital services. I have been completely digital all of this gen. Then people consume netflix on a daily. many companies want to or are delivering streaming services like PSNOW, MS with Xcloud, Google with Stadia and more......With gamepass, you need to download your games and nobody complains when they have to download games when propping up gamepass......Thing is more and more you need a noncapped internet connection. I also fail to see why someone would want to download a game place it on the USB drive for the off chance that they may play it later. Even now, people load their PS4 drives with games that sits there forever. It's no big deal you can download the games when you are really going to play because you will waste a download for months or years anyway...

John from Digital Foundry is that kind of guy, he complains of the most trivial thing. Having cold storage of PS5 games on the USB may be easier for him when he wants to test games, but Sony has not delivered a System just to make everything easy for Digital Foundry members. I'm sure he is not the one paying for the internet connection at Eurogamer, so he can surely set up his camera if he has to spend 7 minutes downloading a 50 GB file........Soon he will be complaining that transferring from USB to SSD is taking too long. There is always something.... I mean the guy says the music playing in the background on each UI game icon may be annoying to some......For the love of Crom, I'm pretty sure you can turn that off if it bothers you. He is that type of person that's a bit too whiny for triviality, John complained that people could set the PS4 to 1080p and get better performance in many PS4 games, he wanted that in the game menu itself. So any developer who did not offer supersampling from higher rez, you could boost frames from the OS, which is a good thing, but the fact that many other outlets discovered many games with boosted 1080p modes in the OS and he did not, he complained and of course hitting the PS button and going into the video settings menu is too much work........Everything has to be tailored to what makes DF's work easier on PS5...

The truth is SSD expansion drives are coming, when you download your PS5 games to them, they are ready to play, no transfers necessary. That was said a long time ago. Having cold storage of your PS5 games may be convenient in some scenarios, but not necessary, you can't use it unless you transfer anyway. The console has not even launched and people are already nitpicking. There will be day 1 patches and clearly there are things Sony wants to keep under wraps still. Cerny also said that custom SSD's will be tested for launch and even beyond launch. So the drama on no cold storage and no custom SSD's at OS level right now is just a push for console wars at best. There is no way I as a gamer would put a PS5 game on a USB hdd for cold storage. I would fill it with PS4/PS3 games instead.....When they give a go on expansion SSD's. I would just load more PS5 games there....Simple..

Just seen the full post. This is some real drivel here. Making John's entirely reasonable comments into something you can make part of your (and others) personal jihad against DF is embarrassing too.

This is nothing to do with console warz, this is about having a basic feature that gives the console better functionality and saves people money.

Fine by me.
The thing i want to know is

Can i play my PS4 games, from my External HDD in my -future- PS5 without using the internal storage?

you can. This thread topic is a temporary inconvenience that was assumed for some time. The reason, as we know, is the PS5 SSD is ACTUALLY custom. The x SSD is off the shelf. So any supplemental storage has to match speed which could potentially create a bottleneck. If you were storing PS5 games on an external, you still have to copy back and forth.

also, the thread title shouldadd, “on review units”. Then change at launch and as the option becomes available. Since the op is so concerned.

Thanks, I read somewhere that in case that you want to do the thing that I mentioned before....the PS5 copy data in the internal storage anyway, am I wrong right?

The number of PC gamers with a $1500 GPU are very low. The number of those buying them to primarily play Gears Tactics (and games like it) is miniscule.

Get real.
The point doesn’t change if we are talking about a $400, 800 or 1500 GPU on top of the cost of making a computer. The number of next gen consoles are low since they all just launched or launching. But since you have all the numbers and trying to make it a fact who plays what on what then please provide all your “facts” vs somehow we are not a world of gamers that have different/similar/mixture of taste no matter what we use for personal enjoyment.......I’ll wait. My point was more broad then your specific problem with Gears Tatics. You know the Xbox Series X/S is capable of what it does with existing content and regardless of your single opinion people like myself like that shit. Just like someone that bought a new GPU card to get better FPS and graphics for COD Warzone and Flight simulator on PC. You know a game feature launched less than a year ago and one that just launched a couple of months ago. Yet other gamers(nothing wrong with this) are celebrating playing a 2 gen old upgrade game on their shiny new console for 500 and paying for that 2 gen game upgrade. Again why do you care of anyone’s personal enjoyment? You talk as if no exclusives will ever come like this is the best that a console can do when we know the real games are coming in a couple of years to take advantage of both consoles.

for both? No. Sony has them now. Look at MM with industry leading ray tracing and the 2 gen old game that looks better than anything else available, anywhere. And Ratchet is coming soon as well. Others may have to wait a long time though.

with no storage add-on from available from the offset and the fact it maybe quite expensive feature for people to have, having more options of how you can store your games is not a bad thing

Does this mean I couldn't predownload Demon's Souls to ym PS4 extended storage then copy it to PS5 SSD when I get the console on 19th?

Anyone think it’s worth it to get an external SSD for ps4 games? Will the system actually take advantage of the speed increase. Have any reviews shown any of this. I’m thinking I may just get a 4tb external for my ps4 games and call it a day.

I'd be interested to know this as well. With the Series X theres very little difference between internal, external NVME or an external sata. Only external mechanical is massively slower.

Yes because it is a PS5 game you will have to wait to actually download it on the internal SSD

What's cool about the PS5 is the SSD, SONY needs to let players upgrade parts, it's gamer nature to upgrade hard drivers, plug in external hard drives.

So hunting down this information and this is the only thing i've found so far. People are expecting them to be similar I guess. I really would like to see some PS5 testing though :

Fact is people buying a new mid to high-end GPU are generally less price-conscious than console-only gamers. They are generally enthusiasts who will shell out to play old games on higher graphical settings, and it's more in line with PC gaming as a whole, buying new cards every few years, tweaking games to your own desire as I'm sure you know.

I couldn't care less if people want buy a new console to play old games - but those gamers who shit on new launch games for another system (especially those getting really high reviews) look ridiculous when all they're talking about is old content with nothing comparable on their system of choice.

The inability to store ps5 games on an external storage device has nothing to do with PS5's custom SSD. You would not be executing the code from the external drive in this scenario. This is simply a case of finite resources, and Sony directing those resources in other areas before launch.

It does seem odd thing to leave out with such limited space to start with. As you mentioned though, there theoretically could be a day 1 patch to correct this issue.

Inability? You mean option? I’m pointing out the difference in drives because there is no precedent so nobody knows why. I don’t know, You don’t know. Because it’s actually a custom drive. The x isn’t. It’s off the shelf. PS5 drive is bespoke. Drawing conclusions from existing tech isn’t going to apply here. We’re talking about installing so many PS5 games that you’re out of space and would need to install to external and have to swap back and forth. It’s an inconvenience for now and a minor one. The bottom line is, the reason it’s even an issue is because the PS5 has so many games to play at launch AND has the fastest SSD and needs faster drives to be available in order to install and play drives directly. It’s a good problem to have.

So PS5 owners should be happy that they are not able to back up their PS5 games and must instead download them again if they want to play them? And that's a good thing because Sony decided to solder their custom storage to the motherboard? What are you even saying?

I don't think anyone is complaining about the SSD or its speed. People are complaining because there's literally no way to expand the storage right now and they'd like to know when they'll be able to. A good compromise would have been to allow people to back up PS5 games to external storage and swap to and from internal storage. It really doesn't seem like an unreasonable ask.

If a person has a PS5 in their possession at this very moment, they have the "inability" to back up their PS5 games on external storage solutions. There is no point in arguing semantics. A custom SSD has nothing to do with this. If the PS5 software allowed, you could theoretically back a PS5 game up to floppy disks, if you had enough. As long as you transferred the contents from the floppy disk back onto the PS5 internal drive it would run no different. So when you say" you don't know, I don't know", you are incorrect. It's just still ones and zeros.

Again, this may be corrected by a day one patch but we will have to see.

No. But happy overall enough to cut them slack while it sorts out.

that the PS5 is faster than any drive, ever. It’s threaded into the system architecture. The drive in the x is replaceable because it’s off the shelf. So we don’t know what testing needs to be done in order to have any PS5 related options commingled in any way with the custom drive installed.
no way to expand the storage right now
Exactly. It’s a minor temporary inconvenience. With all the other positives, it’s not the end of the world to wait while it’s sorted out. It will be sorted out.
allow people to back up PS5 games to external storage and swap to and from internal storage.
how many PS5 games will one person have on their system before this is resolved? I know there are so many PS5 games to play at launch and soon after. You know there are many games to play on the PS5 at launch at launch and soon after. But realistically, is anyone buying every game and installing it to their drive without starting new games and completing them all before this is sorted out? We’ll see, but I doubt it.

This thread topic is a temporary inconvenience that was assumed for some time.

Nobody was assuming you couldn't back up games to a USB drive... in fact everyone was saying they will start the gen doing that if need be.

It's not the end of the world either way, it would just.. be better if people could move games to USB.

It's also just a rather odd omission.

Using an external USB 3.1 SSD on PS5 will be (theoretically) faster than the equivalent on XSX because I think the PS5 can actually support 3.1 speeds of 10Gbps. I don't think the XSX supports this?

You took one piece of what I said and followed it up saying 2 other things I have said a few times. The assumption was, there were going to be issues because of the speed of the drive. Backing up games at launch is a luxury for OCD related tendencies that have no bearing on most people until they have so many games that it’s actually a restriction. If it’s not sorted by then, please, by all means, bump this post. I’ll then say, “Sony, you messed up, let’s go”

Ps4 and Xbone was the same deal.

This isn't a thing.
You can move a game to your USB storage on both Xbone and PS4.... and you can move PS4 games on PS5.

The OS literally has the ability to move games to the extended storage but they did not implement it for PS5 for an unknown reason.

It's possible retail units will have the feature, or it'll be patched soon... seems likely it will be there before it becomes a problem after more games come out. Hell it's possible you can move games to USB and it's in some menu reviewers haven't found yet lol

I was looking at the specs sheets, and the XSX has USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports (5Gb/s) and PS5 has Gen 2 ports (10Gb/s).

I get it, you’d have to go back a few quotes and not everyone does for context. The thread title is way of too by the way. It should say” before launch “ or “may not” but whatever.
and I’m not saying it was assumed for eternity. I’m saying, we knew back in March that there were going to be issues related to PS5 game storage to supplemental drives. The internal expansion was a wait and see. The external USB is not as big a deal because you still need to swap. It’s a temporary inconvenience. I’m not surprised. I’m happy enough with everythingelse we’re getting at launch to give them a pass. In my opinion, it’s been earned. Even if the custom SSD isn’t EXACTLY the reason to blame, it’s related because the other PS5 expansion option is unavailable due to the drive being so fast.

SMH, The storage medium is of no consequence when you are referring to backing up software or data. Software is written in 1's or 0's. As long as those bits of info are present, the medium is irrelevant. An example, large business back up their long term important files onto tape to this very day. Sure, it's slower, but speed does not matter in these scenario.

The only and I mean only situation where this would not be the case is when you are dealing with quantum computing software, which is written not in bits, but qubits which are in a quantum state. You are free to investigate this matter in further detail on your own time. So unless Sony just released the first home use quantum computing platform, you are incorrect. Take the L and move on.

Neither had the option at launch. That was my point.

This will be fixed in an update in the near future as you said.

Why they don't have this at launch is beyond me.

theres nothing to discuss because you’re wrong. The only absolute here is that you don’t know. You have nothing to draw on. You have no experience with this. X and o, 1 and 0. It doesn’t matter. Lolol it doesn't matter? You are out of your depths.

Since they offered a digital version they should have made this part clear up front, yes we knew we couldn't play from the external storage but it was never said that we couldn't store games there. People with data caps could have issues with this, it'll also take longer to download a game again than it would just to transfer it between drives. I'm sure this will be changed in time but it seems like a silly thing to not have handled by launch.

of course I am. Everyone who didn’t design the PS5 is. You’re telling me, that, knowing the PS4 is capable of storing games to external. The x1 is, The x is and the PS5 can store PS4 games. And that the PS5 not storing PS5 games to external has absolutely nothing to do with the custom SSD? When there is no precedent and this is the only variable between these scenarios.

There is a precedent, three of them to be exact. First, when you download a game onto your PS5, the source of that download is a data center. Those data centers do not store PS5 games onto a bunch of 825Gb custom ssd's. Secondly, PS5 games are sold on the blu-ray format, your games don't get boxed with an ssd. Third, every single line of code that is written in bits (so all computer code ever written).

How can this, and your claim that it may be impossible also be true? Something's got to give.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Pretty sure this will be patched shortly after launch.

They build the hardware and the os. Its not a bug, its a feature that's simply not supported. Remember, ratchet and clank can't run on a normal ssd. Think what would happen if someone clocked a Samsung ssd into the USB port and it ran ratchet and clank just as good?

Maybe they are waiting until they have some external ps5 only hard drives for 299. Remember the Vita storage discs?

I agree, there is a precedent for a console supporting external storage of its current games. It’s evident in the PS4,XB1 and the series x. The series x can also store last gen(s) games. The PS5 can store PS4 games. There’s your precedent. Now, there is one console of these 4 that has a custom SSD that outperforms anything else on the market.the PS5. Although the series x has their SSD threaded into its architecture, it is not done to the extent that PS5 is. Now, we have established that nowhere ever has there been a situation as the PS5. Therefore, when they have yet to enable new gen games to be stored on an external drive, and we know it is perfectly doable in similar, but not identical situations, we look for the variable. The variable in this case is the custom SSD threaded into the architecture. That’s what I’m saying. There’s no precedent for what the PS5 is doing with storage.

Let's make sure we are debating the same thing. I am not claiming you could play the game from external storage, the point of the thread and what I'm arguing is we should be able to store a "backup" of the game on an external drive.

So if we are debating the same thing, there is precedent for being able to store PS5 games on other medium than the custom SSD found in ps5. I just listed them, blu-ray and storage platters in data centers. You can download or install demon souls from either of these two mediums. Therefore, the variable you speak of "custom SSD" is proven to be irrelevant.

There is no reason, other than effort, for not being able to store a PS5 game on an external drive. It can be proven by my examples above. Fact, no other way around it. I also mentioned earlier, they will for sure patch this in, but that's not what I'm debating you about.

We are and we are not. We both agree it is possible and should be available shortly. But your examples are not a 1:1. There is no 1:1. I laid out 3 consoles that can do it. The fourth hasn’t enabled it yet. That’s a fact, there is no other way around that. You can’t and haven’t given me an example of another console or technology that has to figure out what the PS5 needs to allow the drive to function the way it needs to. Again, the only variable is the custom SSD. Any other example is not applicable unless it has a custom SSD threaded into the architecture. It’s not coincidental. We are not using the SSD as the reason why the Dualsense battery is dying or why the industry leading ray tracing in MM is so good. We’re talking about storage in a bubble where something is being done in direct relation that has never been done before.

I don't get why you're bringing up the series X "off the shelf" SSD other than getting a chance to shit on it, last time I checked you cannot play Xbox series X Games off of a external and must have it on the internal SSD or the proper expandable SSD however you are able to store them on a HDD unlike on the PS5.. Keep on pushing your overlord Sony though..

because the x is the only other system ever created in history that has their SSD built into the architecture. The difference is that it’s not as dependent overall and it isn’t custom. It’s off the shelf. So it’s more common and easier to adapt for now.

I fail to see the downside with it then, however I don't get into the Nitty gritty with the SSD's.. Both consoles SSD solutions are good in my book and it's best just to enjoy the benifits.
