The graphics in this game are still weird to me.

Definitely very impressive in parts, but it surely can't just be me who's underwhelmed by the opening (castle) area in this video?

The materials don't look great at all: specifically the wood and stone both look kind of low res and muddy. Am I missing something? It seems so obvious to me and yet everyone else is just raving about the visuals...

What makes it so odd is that textures on hard surfaces like those were already pretty much mastered last gen, so it surely can't be a technical limitation. Wood and stone in games like Uncharted 4 and God of War were effectively photorealisitc last gen. It's almost like Bluepoint have made a conscious decision here, but I think they look awful....

Anyone else see what I mean? I noticed it in the first gameplay trailer, too.

Well you could shows us screenshots of which texture looks low re and muddy.

I thought I described them - the wood and stone in the first Boletaria area, the castle outside.

I don't have screens, they're on the video and I don't know how to capture from that and I can't be bothered looking into it right now.

Well I'm not seeing any low res texture here and honestly think its going to be very hard judge it based on youtube video.

I agree, and I'll just wait until I can see high quality footage to really make a better decision on it.

But - having said that - that scene and those materials look worse to me than YT videos of other games with similar scenes/materials, like God of War and Uncharted 4.

Genuine question: does that scene look good to you? As in, significantly better than equivalent scenes from current gen?

It just doesn't to me. I'd love to be more impressed, cos it's a game I'm planning to buy. But hand on heart I'm just not so far - at least in scenes like that.

You are asking wrong guy, I'm not buying this game for "graphics" I'm buying to play Demon's Souls on 60 FPS because really enjoyed the game back in 2009.

But to answer your question, yes it does. This game is not going for hyper realistic visuals like God of War or Uncharted, so if you expecting photo realistic texture, you are not going to get it with this game.

Hmm, fair enough.

Fwiw though I'd say the game's art style is at least as photorealistic as either of those games.

Show the damn fidelity mode. All I care at this point.

These people been latching to 60 fps marketing like a tick. Look at God of War, no one gives a f' except the vocal few. Miles Morales will be the same thing. Ain't nobody sacrificing that sweet RT and improved graphics over 60 fps. As long as it's a solid locked 30 fps we good.

You think I’m halving the framerate for some visual glitz? 60fps improves visuals itself by resolving things in motion better. Fuck 30fps if I don’t have to have it. Panning shots and camera movement looks like Powerpoint at 30.

I don't know, man. I know I am going to get a lot of hate for this so I'm prepared. I was super pumped about this but the more I see the more I realise it's just Demon Souls with a shiny new coat.

The AI code, enemy attacks and animations are largely unchanged from the original and to be honest it's kind of jarring to see in the midst of next gen visuals. It kind of sticks out.

I had the impression that everything was remade from the ground up. Like, their own take on how Demon Souls should play in 2020. Not have gameplay and AI that is unchanged from 2012...

It's especially jarring when Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne have superior combat and enemy animations compared to Demon Souls.

Demon Souls was my favourite game back in the day but let's be honest, there are many aspects that are dated now.

I'm still buying this day one but I guess I had unrealistic expectations of what a remake entails.

Just my opinion please don't kill me.

They would get more shit if they changed the essence of the game. As they explained in the video, they’ve redone everything while keeping the core intact. The animations are not the same, but they line up just the same as the originals. It was the only way to successfully remake this game.

Choose a body type? So there are apparenty no genders any more, just body types?

The west has completely transitioned to a clown world.

Probably a call made by the Retard Department at SIE in California.

Then our definition whats "photorealistic" is very different.

I personally don't consider this as "photorealistic".

This what I would call "photorealistic".

LOL that doesn't appear to be an image of either Uncharted 4 or God of War (!)
Thats flight simulator, what I was trying to show you is Demon's Souls is going for more of fantastical style rather than "photorealistic".

Yes but I didn't say it was as photorealisitc as it's possible to be, just that it is IMO at least as photorealisitc as UC4 and GOW.

As it happens, the fantasy setting is IMO also independent of the art style. IMO the art style is broadly photo realism, as in the real world elements are rendered to mimic their real world counterparts. Not perhaps as much as Death Stranding, but I think more than Uncharted 4, say, which has a distinctly 'painterly' aesthetic.

Skipped out on the last couple years of PS3. I played TLOU on PS4, then revisited the PS3 version and glad I did play on the four.

I missed this game on PS3. My first experience will be on the PS5 (when I can find one).

Fair enough, I would say if you buying PS5 for "next gen graphics" maybe wait for games like God of War Ragnarok or Horizon 2. I'm buying Demon's Souls to enjoy the gameplay in smoother FPS.

Gavin Moore has already confirmed improvement of drop rates, specifically for the Pure Bladestone. Still gonna be a grind though, but not to the extent of the original.

I always thought the difficulty in acquiring the pure bladestone was a bit exaggerated. Sure it was kinda annoying having to go offline to farm max black WT, but after that it wasn't too much of a slog. And that skeleton was quite fun to fight :D

Really not a fan of the HUD elements, enemy health bars or status effect notifications. It all feels flat, almost amateurish and out of place.

You forgot the death screens, who's green lighting this shit? Everything else looks amazing, though, so I can get over it eventually.

The reason you see it doesn’t look good is because of the mute colors they used( maybe they trying to maintain the original version’s mood) and because of the diffuse light and fog in that area too. And the textures don’t look good because the camera is pan out compare to other footage you’ve seen. And youtube.
Sorry for my bad english lol.

Looks fantastic as usual. I'm not too hot on that UI though. I can see why they left it out of the early gameplay trailers. It just comes off as jarring since the rest of the game looks so gorgeous.

Doesn't matter. PS guys live in their own world were every other game not an exclusive doesn't exist.
You just can’t stop, can you? People have every right to think a game looks great. Stop with the low IQ posts. Not everyone is a fanboy like you.

If you can’t bring anything to the table, at least stop acting like a petulant child. Everyone knows you enjoy PC. I do PC gaming and have a great gaming rig, but you don’t see me in these threads or Xbox threads acting like you.

On topic: This is my first game to play on the PS5. That and Ass Creed Valhalla on PC.

It looks really good. It looks like this coming generation will have graphics without obvious flaws everywhere and almost cgi like at points.

The HUD designer needs to be fired though. The original had a very fitting rpg ish HUD, the new one belongs in Minecraft.

And yeah as soon as they started character creation I knew it was going to be a badass black chick.

I think part of the reason it looks downgraded to me is the main character is covered in that blue shield a lot of the time - is that usually there or no?

Everything does kind of look like clay now that you mention it. It's especially apparent in that screenshot with the bluish dragon. It still looks really good overall, but yeah, the materials could've been more lifelike.

Also, for anyone that´s interested, Bluepoint has confirmed that the infamous dupe glitch is intact. So feel free to cheat to your hearts content.
You will probably get softbanned if you use it online, or offline and then log in with different amounts of stuff. At least in DS3 the server kept track of the number of slabs and some other items and would throw you to the cheaters "lounge" if numbers were suddenly higher.
But it's great for a full offline platinum trophy hunt.

Looks brilliant. A small but very welcome QOL improvement is the removal of the item pickup prompt that you had to dismiss with X. That was always a stupid thing, a non-interrupting item notification is so much better.

We can take photos now but people still paint. They're obviously going for a particular art style and not everything has to look realistic.

that's just horrible and insane, ruins pvp and makes pve pointless. Do you have a source for this?

btw while we're at staying true to the original, the trophy list has been revealed. All the grind-fest RNG bullshit is out, replaced by what I always hoped will get recognized in ARPG progression - beating bosses in more challenging ways.

I read it in an interview with Gavin Moore, the director of the game. Can't find it now, but he was asked a question if some of the infamous glitches would be present in the game. He clarified that glitches like cheesing bosses through fog gates were removed from the game, but that more famous glitches would remain intact. He didn't specifically mention the dupe glitch, but he hinted at it strongly, since the dupe glitch is the most (in)famous of them all.

However, the change of UI can mean that the glitch is removed since dupe trick is tied to the menu, so I guess we have to see when the game releases.

Regarding destroying PvP and PvE. For PvP, DS is Soul level based and, most likely, weapon upgrade based, so you can't level up ad infinitum, or else you'll be locked out from match making. This will prevent griefing. And as Arctos mentioned above, you'll probably get soft banned if you use it online.

Regarding PvE. Just don't use the glitch if you don't want it ruined.

Just watched the State of Play in 4K. It looks absolutely stunning. This is the prettiest game I've ever seen in video game history. Shrine of Storms is a graphical tour de force.

This is exactly the kind of graphical powerhouse I want when buying a new console, and for once, it's not a soulless tech demo, but instead it's one of the most critical acclaimed and beloved video games of all time.

I can't wait to play this. I want it now. The wait is unbearable, to the point of torturing. And I can't get it on launch, but have to wait until December.

Here is the interview with Gavin Moore. Here is what he said about the glitches in the game.

"One aspect of Demon’s Souls that will be addressed is its bugginess. Players could take advantage of the game’s unpolished state to cheaply attack certain bosses through the game’s fog doors — barriers that wall off rooms where boss fights happen. Players won’t be able to exploit those bugs in the remake, Moore says, but other, far less consequential, meme-worthy bugs and game design quirks will be properly retained."

I've might have jumped the gun there with the dupe glitch being confirmed, since the glitch is anything but "far less consequential ". But it is meme-worthy though. My apologies for any confusion.

Damn the mention of the different modes always makes me wish Sony would just release those games on PC.
I loathe technical compromises.
