Fidelity mode is a mystery for no other reason than someone's stupid decision to make 60 fps their #1 marketing bullet point. Instead of well, side dessert on the RT plate - like Spider-man Miles Morales.
Yeah. When they finally showed Mile Morales in fidelity mode, it was a major wow moment. I wonder if they're hoping to have the same reaction with DS. First impress with the performance mode, and then own the room with the fidelity mode.

The HUD physically bothers me. It grinds against the aesthetic of the game... Everything else is 100%.

Agreed, the UI is not good. The "flat" modern design is incongruous with the underlying art-style, and the white border has too much contrast to the dark gameplay, distracting the players focus.

I don' think there will be any major difference with fidelity mode apart form native 4K. It's probably why they've choosen to only demo perf mode.

I kind of agree and I wish they would give us the option to change to old UI like they did with camera and filter.

Okay? doesn't mean they should refrain from ever showing fidelity mode.
If you look at most conversation around Souls games, what most people want and care about is better FPS and I think this why Bluepoint mostly showing off performance mode.

I mean... that's still dark souls alpha game. Just with new graphics... I think people never liked it that very much compared to later games.
I never played it so I hope it's good

I’m surprised by how much I like both. The Nexus looks... weird to me, but otherwise, I love how much the new version’s atmosphere, tone, and yes, the fact that it’s basically the best looking game ever.

But I am completely shocked at how well the original aged. I think it aged better than Dark Souls. It’s just so thick with atmosphere and feeling itself, as well as maintaining a surprising quality for that time. Imo, you could HD remaster that, so we get out of the dark ages of resolution, and people would be fine with it.

Demon’s Souls was AA experimental game, it didn’t have best graphical tech but what it did have was fantastic art direction, games like this and SMT Nocturne will never age badly, no matter how much time passes.

IDK about that. It blew me away back in the day, and it impresses me now. Art direction obviously plays a role, but I wouldn’t underestimate the tech chops here.

I'm so fucking disappointed that I'm not getting a PS5 on launch. I want to play this from the start, engaging with the community, troll other players with messages, help people in co-op, exploring the nooks and crannies and everything between, discovering this amazing game for a second time. Goddamn this sucks.

Ah, I feel the same way. Eh, what can you do? Hopefully early next year the supply will increase and we can get it then.

The camera on this state of play was for the first time the classic mode. In the previous trailers they had the new camera positioning much closer to the player and with a slight off set... that angle is much more modern and brings so much more detail and dramatic feeling to the gameplay...

This game is gorgeous, the first and only real next gen game... I can only imagine what first party studios will bring later on..

The 19 can’t come soon enough...

I still don't get what is wrong with particle effects in most modern games.

They just look way too bright, to the point of hurting the eyes and becoming too distracting when in the peripheral vision.
This also happens in DOOM, Unreal Engine 4 games and some others.

HDR. It’s an opportunity to have a beautiful-looking flourish on newer televisions.

After 9:15, he finds out magic is op and sticks with it. That's how i endured this game back then. That is the easy mode everyone searching for.

I didn't like HUD elements, it looks like a step back. Other than that, this looks awesome!

They’re probably showing off all these games in performance mode, because the vast majority of mobile hardware don’t have 4K options, rendering that invisible. When the choice is inbetween invisible and gorgeous 60 FPS...

The only issue i have with this is how small the health stamina bars are. I hipe i can enlarge them slightly. Need it to be more obvious when in heat of battle

It really pains me that people stress 60fps and above on Souls games, because desirable as high frame-rates might be, these games really do not require it.
The franchise, hell the style, was established by games that ran sub 30 for extended periods, and people still loved them. Mainly because generally they don't require twitch reflexes, combat-wise they are about stamina and position management more than anything and their overall atmosphere and dark forboding feel is a product of their high level art and audio direction.

Having a higher visual detail mode at the expense of 30fps is right for Demon's. Not because its going to be first-choice for everyone, maybe not even the majority, but its nice to see the pure visuals get pushed to the max.

I'm a huge fan of the Nioh games, and they really do benefit hugely from 60fps because the pace of combat is much quicker, so I'm not arguing that its always the case that frame-rate isn't crucial. I just think that having played all the Souls' titles its more an aesthetic improvement than a gameplay one.

Hope they've improved some of the boss encounters and some of the stats like how armor works (not by a lot, but balancing it a bit more). I'm actually far less afraid of some gameplay tweaks. Like how they limited grass, that's a good change.

However, the big sin is lighting. Some of the areas look utterly mundane compared to Demon's Souls (PS3), a lot due to the lighting.

Just look at the video and compare to Mind Flayers on PS3:

Visibility of VoD also seems to have increased, which in my opinion sort of ruins the disorienting nature and oppressive feel of the stage.

Have they increased the lighting just for the videos or? All in all, it feels a bit soulless compared to Demon's Souls (PS3). It looks great and will probably be an addition that those who loved DS3 will be happy with, but it just feels less scary and oppressive than Demon's Souls (PS3). Most of what Demon's Souls is known for is its levels and their moods. Boss-wise, they've been rather easy, which is why I always thought Bluepoint should stay as true as possible to the original arts-wise, but improve on the gameplay elements.
Don't forget they've added a bunch of filters you can turn on for camera mode and gameplay, one of which is apparently meant to evoke the classic look.

Hopefully that helps.

Anyone else feel like the more graphics advance, the harder it is to evoke a consistent "tone" atmosphericly when your mind is no longer required to fill in the blanks?
Modern movies have the same issue for me, everything looks so nice that there's rarely much grit to them anymore.

I would like for Bluepoint to show the PS3 filter. Would be cool to see how it looks. It it does come close to the original, or is an exact replica, I think that is one of the nicest bonuses in the game.

Is there any difference between performance and fidelity mode other than native 4k?

Yes, Digital Foundry’s commentary track is enabled, allowing Alex, John and Rich to point out the visual differences, as compared to Performance mode, while you progress through the campaign.

For attractive female gamers, the commentary mode is said to be as sexually stimulating as actually having all three members of the DF team in your bedroom on a Saturday night.

I could probably spend hours in a creator like this. The detail is leaps above what I would have expected, which will make trying to make my perfect warrior all the better.

Still wishing this was on PS4 like Miles Morales just so I didn't have to plop out 500+ for it, but what can you do?

More important than anything else is fixing the drop rate of Pure Bladestone.
Hopefully, at least one of, the reviews cover that.

Gavin Moore has already confirmed improvement of drop rates, specifically for the Pure Bladestone. Still gonna be a grind though, but not to the extent of the original.
