I currently have an MSI Optix MAG271C for use with my PS4 Pro and it’s just a bit disappointing. I’ve had it for around 2 years now and I bought it for a reasonable price (sub £200), the image quality is really quite decent but the motion handling is really poor, very stuttery with a lot of ghosting.

I’m looking to upgrade it, mainly to get smoother gameplay and the LG 27GL850-B seems to be a good choice from what I’ve read. But some places seem to call it one of the best 27” gaming monitors on the market, but then you can look at 4 different top ten lists and it’s not even mentioned!

Is it a safe bet? Will it be much of an improvement over my current monitor? Is there a better option for me?

I’m not willing to spend more than £300-400, just to say up front. Any advice is appreciated!

Its not an upgrade in terms of picture quality for PS4 Pro and PS5 because they both dont support native 1440p. The picture will be very soft compared to the 1080p picture of the old monitor (i guess its 1080p) because it will be upscaled from 1080p. if you also play PC then it might be ok. If you plan on getting a ps5 i would go for a 4k tv/monitor
you could look into rtings. they test tvs and monitors very extensively

Yeah, I feel like I’m in that awkward middle ground where my current monitor is a bit disappointing, but I’m unwilling to spend mad money to see huge improvements.

The MSI is OK, just panning the camera sucks with how juddery the movement is.

I’m not at all bothered about 4K by the way, don’t see the big deal. Smoother gameplay is far more important to me.

I’m looking for a good 43” 16:9 monitor myself for gaming but there doesn’t seem to be a good one. Monitors are really behind right now.

I would buy it 4k monitor, because you don't get that shitty 1080p only output from PS5 and above that due to bigger pixel density, it's gonna look nixer. Not sure about 4k/120hz monitors tho. I am all about Widescreen on PC...

there exist already a couple of 1440p montiors with hdmi 2.0 that support 4k sources and downscale it to 1440p. this would result in a much better clarity than one that doesnt. i dont know how much they cost but i think they would be a better investment if you dont want to get a 4k one. playing ps4 pro on your LG screen will look soft like 720p-900p games on a 1080p screen.

Not with the PS4 Pro. Pc games can be played in windowed modes that would map the pixels 1:1

If you’re at all worried about visuals that changes things. In that case I would wait. You may be able to get a 4K monitor that performs just as well for the same price around Black Friday or your equivalent. Boxing Day?

Thanks for the comments guys, sounds like the LG is a half step that would have better motion but a soft picture. Screw that!

I think I’ll keep my ear to the ground and hang on for a decent sale on a better monitor.

Just letting ya know, the LG 27GL850-B does accept the PS4 Pro's 4K signal and does show as 3840 × 2160 in the PS4 Pro's Video Output Information screen. It then down scales it to 1440p, and I gotta say, it looks great. I had a BenQ 1080p monitor and it is like night and day.

If you have a PC and can utilize the monitor at 1440p, then I would say, the PS4 Pro looking great is an added bonus.

And while I can not feel any lag while playing PS4 games, I will add that according to rtings
Native Resolution @ 60Hz is 14.0 ms. I am not sure if that applies to the PS4 Pro, but sure as hell doesn't feel like it.

Get the Dell S3220DGF. It’s a great monitor. It’s 1440p and can go up to 165hz for pc but can also do 120hz for Xbox. And if you go PS5, it will accept the 4K signal and Downsample to 1440p so you don’t get a blurry image. Fast response time, decent hdr, and good colors for a VA panel. You won’t be disappointed.

Yea there are some 1440p monitor that can receive 4k signal and downsample it well , like my previous Asus TUF VG27AQ . It even display 3860x2160 at the OSD . It also has one of the fastest pixel transition IPS out there . The newer version VG27AQ1A can be found under $450 , worth a consideration

I made the switch from TV to monitor a few years ago and discovered very quickly that picking the right monitor is much trickier than getting a good TV. Generally, with monitors, the market is a lot smaller, so you end up paying a lot more for common features as opposed to TVs.

I'm upgrading my monitors in the spring, moving from two MG28UQs to monitors that are at least 4K 144 hz, hopefully with some form of HDR. I'm going to need support for that resolution and that refresh rate on display port inputs and HDMI inputs. I'd say 4K 144 hz should be your baseline, then start looking for stuff like HDR support and making sure the inputs match up with what you need or are going to need it. If you have an Xbox series X for example, you're going to want free sync support on HDMI inputs.
