The Hyrule Warriors demo is good, the framerate is very bad, and it's still button-mashing hell, but I'm impressed with the BOTW integration, everything about it bleeds Breath of the Wild. I'm not sure how long it last until it becomes boring and repetitive, but so far it's cool enough. Not sure if it's worth a day one purchase though.

In other news - downloaded the demo (Hyrule thingy) but I’m having some trouble tearing myself away from Mario + Rabbids and even when I managed that I found myself playing Ni No Kuni which is an absolute delight so far.
Mario + Rabbids is really great, I wished a sequel would get announced this year, online modes would be fantastic. It's also absolutely beautiful to look at, the Donkey Kong DLC is great too.

Tbh it’s caught me by surprise tbh - picked it up in a sale and bounced off it initially but when I was having a break from 3D Allstars to avoid burnout I gave it a proper go and it’s absolutely fantastic, even though I normally don’t get on with the genre. I’ve experimented more on the Switch and it’s paying off pretty nicely.

And Ni No Kuni has a beautiful story as well, pretty touching actually, with his mother and all that. It's long though and gets extreeeeemely grindy half-way in, but still excellent. I'm actually playing through the second one currently which is also a good one.

I enjoyed Mario Rabbids for a while, but about halfway through it started to feel more like a puzzle game. I was expecting XCom gameplay, but it ended up being more of a best-path approach.

@hariseldon What’s captivating you the most? I’ve been thinking about giving it another shot.

I quite enjoy the puzzle side of it, the challenges are definitely puzzle oriented. The overworld exploration is a tonne of fun, there’s a tonne of charm there and silly toilet humour which is right up my street and the customisation options for your characters (skill tree) really works. The dash mechanics is cool, and I enjoy optimising the path - I’m a programmer so that kind of thing appeals to me.
It’s a game that is very playful - it may not be officially Nintendo but it manages to capture the charm and the love of gaming that goes with Nintendo, while taking a genre that is often too serious and encouraging experimentation. Like many Nintendo games movement matters - the way you can chain jumps and dashes can create some wonderful movement around the board.

Only negative is that things get blurry from time to time - I wonder if there’s some dynamic resolution going on somewhere.

I predict some people getting MEGA MAD.

Long term, I think that cloud streaming is the future. I wonder how it will affect Nintendo’s ability to innovate. Historically, they make consoles that will be able to play the games that they create to innovate gaming experiences.

I bought the original Hyrule Warrior Definite Edition and the demo just felt like more of the same + the BOTW connection. I don’t think I need another warrior style game, especially since it’s Not looking or playing better.

Agreed here, played the first stage of the demo and I’m especially loving how it’s directly tied to BotW’s story. And it looks nice. And I don’t even mind that I’ve probably spent 300 hours in the first game including the 30 I’ve done since this one was announced.

100% okay with this being The Big Holiday Game for this year.

Hyrule Warriors was fantastic.

Being able to go max difficulty from the start is a godsend that I hope BoTW2 learns from.
Being able to toggle the lock on instead of holding constantly also fixes tons of issues with BoTW.
Being able to instantly retry when you die with no loading screen is fantastic and makes the game far more fun even when it's challenging. is this the power of the SSD?

One thing that really sucks is that the motion control is locked to the left joycon, opposite of most games, including BotW.

What time is it?
Beyond the framerate, which is rough, Age of Calamity is dope. While I finished Hyrule Warriors, I can't say I loved it. I like Link's combat this time around much more and the BOTW integrations are wonderful. Korok mother fucking Seeds to collect? Yes, please. Cooking? Yes, Pease! It's really nice to be back in this World even if it is limited. Story seems pretty well done as well.

No More Heroes runs really well.

Yeah, I'm digging the Calamity demo. Some cool additions to the regular warriors combos, including bombs right off the bat (which are awesome) and Cryonis. I switched to Impa briefly and was a bit lost with the interesting move set, but I'm sure I'll pick it up. I'm doing normal difficulty until I get the hang of it but was able to get through the first level without dying, thanks to dodging (love the flurry rush addition!) and remote bombs on the 3 Moblins. Overall I believe I'll enjoy this one more than the original Hyrule Warriors due to the BOTW connection and how much I love that game.

Never played any of the No More Heroes games. Should I start with 1 or jump into 2? They look pretty similar, so maybe only 2 is enough until 3 drops.

You might, I don’t. I like to own my content - it prevents SJWs from taking it away.

I like to own things myself as well. The only streaming service I have is Disney+ for the kids. However, I think we can both agree that the general public is moving to subscription services. Everyone is no there but we’ve seen movies and music go from physical media to digital media and subscription services. Most stores don’t even sell CDs anymore and movie selections are significantly reduced.

I don't think tv shows or movies are comparable to games. They aren't as disposable.

There’s a reason MS is pushing Game Pass. They see the consumer trends. People generally favor ease of use to quality. That’s why CDs and DVDs were so successful versus cassettes and VHS whereas Blu Ray has not been as impactful sales wise and UHD even less. However, digital movies and music have been successful and we’re seeing that success translated to increased subscription services.

Keep in mind, I don’t like these trends, but they are what the marketplace thinks it wants.

In this case though ease of use isn't what's driving it. It's venture capital pushing loss-leading services to create an oligopoly of large companies creating barriers to entry and acting as gatekeepers to new art. It's a dark path, and yes people are doing it, but only because it's cheap due to loss-leading. It won't remain cheap, and we'll lose our freedom. I intend to fight to the last.

I guess Game & Watch still hasn't been cleared by the FCC yet
Yeah I'm waiting for pre-orders to go live. Imagine I'll need to be quick. I didn't have a problem with PS5/Xbox pre-orders but I am sure the Game & Watch will be a mess.

Still waiting on Amazon to stock Fire Emblem too. I usually try to get two pre-orders in case there is a problem with one of them. I've had pre-orders get cancelled on me in the past on several occasions.

Finally snagged one of the LEGO Mario starter sets the other day (aka the only way you can get the actual Mario figure itself), guess they restocked. Having fun putting it together with my daughter. She likes how he says "See you later" when you turn it off, and then immediately gets scared of him when he actually powers down and his eyes turn black lol. I get it.

Those expansion sets are expensive as fuck though, damn is all LEGO stuff like this?

Kind of tempted to try and get one of those LEGO NES sets though.

Well, gameplay footage is available. Looks like they are solid ports:

Ooooh that's nice. Will keep my eyes peeled for a physical release eventually.
