Funny how HD Rumble was a gimmick, but put it in a Sony controller and all of a sudden it's a game changer.

I left it unspoken, because it really was just a goodhearted joke, but yeahhhh.

I think there’s a significant number of people in all three camps that will immediately change all their favorite things overnight, if it becomes the console designer’s new priority, lol.

Here's hoping VR suddenly becomes important to the Nintendo crowd.

Imagine if those 4K Switch rumors were true, and one of the accessories exclusive to the HD console was a light headset that connected to the base console using USB C.

Joycon tracking would have to get infinitely better before it could really be an option though. And there's probably not enough oomph in something like that to run at a higher framerate AND an acceptable resolution. Maybe for the true successor. Le sigh...

Eh. I would really say it’s the same thing. Seems like dual sense is doing a lot more with it than Ninty is. Outside of 1 2 switch with its ice cubes, senran kagura reflexions, and the moment in Kirby Where it plays the theme through only rumble, I can’t think of anything else that really took advantage of it.
Which is a shame as it is an awesome feature.

It's in nearly all first party games, but the usage varies from minor things like catching fish in Animal Crossing to being the entire focus of the game like in 1-2 Switch. One of my favorite implementations is Pinball FX 3 which makes the game feel more like an actual pinball table.

thegamer did a top 10 earlier this year if you're interested: https://www.thegamer.com/best-nintendo-switch-games-using-hd-rumble/

I will definitely check it out. How is Pinball FX btw? I tried it years ago on the 360 I think but can’t remember much outside of boards being pretty pricey.

The base game can be downloaded for free and has Sorcerer's Lair and Fish Tales which are two decent tables. I'm a bigger fan of the Williams tables than their originals, but they have some great ones like Epic Quest. Best value right now is to pick up Star Wars Pinball which has 19 tables and currently retails for around $18.

Crow Continuum does a ranking for the Williams packs (excluding Vol 6 which is new):

What the hell is up with these cloud versions? No rumours, not even a hint of this, and then Nintendo just drops two of the biggest games of the last few years???

5D600C8E809A4CFC7B21FC62DB0707CF94056D06

It started with the Resident Evil 7 for their testing the waters in Japan. I guess it worked out and here we are.

And one of the Assassin’s Creed games too. I just never thought we’d see it in the West due to (mostly) shitty internet. I already have Control on PC but will be giving Hitman a try when it drops.
Have a feeling this will only be really good with a good Ethernet connection, which thankfully, I have.

Sort of. In the short-term, absolutely. Who doesn’t want something for less?

In the long-term, I wonder how sustainable and positive it is, with prices already being jacked up to $70 for next-gen, games becoming more and more risk adverse to recoup budget, switching to GaaS, etc.

You can argue that some of these things would be happening already, but I don’t think publishers training their audience to buy at half price or under, in a short-sighted race to be competitive, is necessarily helping, or the best thing.

I wouldn't think so either, but then we're not privy to the market data and analysis that they inevitably have. Training consumers to wait for half price would be a bad thing, but training consumers to wait for half price instead of stealing is also a good thing. Now they're converting no-sales into sales. We don't know what percentage of full price consumers they lose by dropping prices so aggressively months later, but if they're getting a lot more people to buy than would otherwise at full price then they are coming out in the black, wouldn't you say?

Nintendo is always going to be a special case, of course. They have mastered brand value.

Never thought I'd be streaming a game on the Switch. Guess Nintendo hasn't been sitting on it's ass with this tech either. But anyways, it kind of works? You can feel the inputlag though and it's a little bit choppy now and then, didn't get to any action so I can't tell how much effect all that has.

I ain't buying manjaw's game either way but it's an interesting test.

Is piracy that big of a problem, outside of platforms like the DS and PSP that went rampant with it, due to utter ease? I wasn’t struck that that was the issue.

Honestly, a lot of the things these big publishers do, don’t strike me as particularly wise, or long-term, after watching them for years and years as a part of this hobby. It seems more within my understanding of them to be short-sighted and next quarter focused, rather than building, as you said, a brand value, or building much of anything.

When you have publishers like Activision, who will stumble on a hit and bleed it dry within a few years, with an impossible amount of sequels, instead of building something lasting, as just one example, it’s tough not to see an inadvisable long-term price policy as just that — a lack of long-term thinking and strategy.

It’d be interesting if Cloud Gaming ever took off on the Switch.

It is a solution to getting every game on the platform. One just wonders at what cost, given the internet speed required occluding people like me, killing on-the-go portable functionality unless you have an *amazing* data plan, and introducing lag.

Personally, I’ll take my gimped visuals for something like Witcher 3 over all of that, but I guess in the case where a game literally cannot run otherwise, it’s a real option.

What's your bandwidth?

I’d be open to the cloud gaming docked if the Switch actually took advantage of my internet speed. I have gig speed internet and I get like 40 Mbps on the Switch

As is usually the case, it depends on who you talk to. I've never been convinced that piracy is a serious problem, but the publishers are obviously convinced that it is, hence a lot of piracy protection in PC games. They're also convinced that they're competing against the used game market as well and are actively taking measures to work around that market.

I don't have any numbers to support that these are reasons for the race to the bottom in prices, but I do know anecdotally that the fall in music and video game prices is why piracy has declined.

Switch is giving me 40 Mbps. On my phone or computer it's around 200 though, can it not handle more than that?

That sucks. It should be good enough, though. Any idea what your ping time is? I'm sure there will always be some noticeable amount of input lag, but even 10 years ago I found streaming to be almost good enough.

I’m pretty sure that it sucks, even hardwired.

Wow, I can't imagine that it's an actual hardware limitation.

Well, PC is a different equation. That platform is broken wide-open. The used market, I think, is a more compelling argument.

Of course, that takes us right back to Nintendo. Why isn’t piracy a problem for them? Used games? A lot of people treat Nintendo like some magical Willy Wonka factory, but it’s just another company, one with the sense to build value and long-term appeal into their games and brand. Pricing follows from that. Create something fun, special, and compelling, and don’t create the expectation that launch buyers are getting ripped off, and should wait, and people will gladly pay full-price for it.

Have you seen the volume of stability improvements for Switch? It is a very stable platform.

I gave Control a go. Server capacity was full and I got placed in a queue of over 1000 that was taking ages to go down. Disastrous first impression but then it jumped me 900 places after two or three minutes and I was ready to go.

Once in the game ran more or less immaculately on Switch’s much maligned wifi, as good as if not better than when I tried it on PS Now, but I’d need gyro controls to carry on playing this in handheld.

Seems like they've adjusted most of the issues I had with the demo. I was worried because the survey didn't allow specific answers, but they seem to have figured out what needed improving.
