Article: The Big Ferocious GPU Cannot Maintain 60 FPS in 4K When Running Watch Dogs: Legion With Ultra Settings...Without Ray Tracing!

Who would've thought that a graphics card that costs a whopping $1500 and has an astounding 10,496 CUDA cores, 24 gigabytes of VRAM (GDDR6X), and a bandwidth of 936 gigabytes per second would fail to maintain sixty frames per second when running a typical, bland-looking game by Ubisoft?

Sure, the conditions under which it fails are extreme - Ultra settings and 4K resolution - but the RTX 3090 was designed to be The 4K Beast and a card that can flirt with even 8K.

So, Watch Dogs: Legion should be child's play for the Big Ferocious GPU, particularly with ray tracing turned off, considering the severe lack of detail on the textures of objects and the skin of character models, as well as the apparent low number of polygons that comprise the models of both objects and characters.

This game doesn't appear to feature graphical features such as tesselation, subsurface scattering, volumetric lighting, or global illumination. So, why is it so demanding?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a much more graphically advanced game, yet the RTX 3090 can run it consistently at 70 to 85 frames per second in 4K with Ultra settings.

What do you think is the explanation, PC gamers? That the game has been poorly coded or that it genuinely warrants being as demanding as it is?

Because all games are built differently, it’s as simple as that really.

Anyone arguing otherwise is simply misinformed. Yes, the hardware matters too but the developers matter most and how they use the hardware.

The developers of Watch Dogs made certain choices and this is the result. That said, 4K Ultra with RT and people are surprised it hits a ceiling?

Christ, anything to cry about in gaming.

4K Ultra without RT. Did you read the title of the thread?

Ubisoft really needs to update their out of date game engines.
It's probably a software bottleneck on ubi's end.

It's something like the engine is failing to deliver on time with certain aspects.
The GPU and CPU are not struggling but actually waiting for the engine to catch up.

But that's just a theory... A GAME THEORY!
....i'll see myself out.

Ubisoft games are never optimized well on PC, the open world games anyway.
Tech sites used to use WatchDogs 2 to benchmark new cpus for example.
The game is a lot better looking than you give credit for to be honest. CohhCarnage said it was arguably the best looking city based open world he has ever played, when playing earlier today.
Its like there is no 60fps mode on the next gen consoles, with or without RT, and they are probably running the game way lower than Ultra settings.

It's perfectly fine to ship a game with future proof high-end settings that require hardware from the future. People really need to move away from this mindset that you should always be able to play games at the highest settings with the best hardware at release.

The game's graphics look terrible based on the following video.

I watched that video on a 55" 4K TV; trust me, it looks awful. There is no depth or detail on skin and textures; everything is flat and plain.
And i watched CohhCarnage's stream earlier of actual gameplay, at max settings, and i thought it looked fantastic. A clear jump above WatchDogs 2 and GTAV. Some of the environments are incredibly detailed.

This is why I don't game at 4K on the PC. 240hz monitor + high FPS > 4K.

Also, this isn't an Ubisoft problem. You will see newer games absolutely cripple 3080s/3090s at 4K.

The problem is Ubisofts's inhouse engines. AnvilNext for Assassin's Creed games and Disrupt for Watch Dogs.

They probably share a lot of code and are terribly optimized. 30fps is relatively easy but going from 30 to 60 requires 5x the power for some reason and then you still won't be able to completely LOCK 60 because you'll be CPU limited. Not the fault of the CPU, but of the engine utilizing it.

I think Ray tracing is over hyped to be honest. Its nice and in in some examples but for alot of areas its just a different look. By that I mean the effect isn't necessarily better, just different. I don't think it's really worth the performance hit IMO.

Watch Dogs 2 is a great looking game on max settings. And very CPU bound. Also, faster RAM really made a difference.

Judging on the videos of Legion so far, it doesn't look very good tbh. Character models and faces are not detailed enough, very flat lighting overall.

But again, I'll see myself when it releases. Videos are often not a good representation.

Why are people saying it is poorly optimised and such. These GPU's are just 2-2.5 times more powerful than their price counterpart of last gen.

The game doesn't look really good and very current Gen-y. I would even say it's looks bad for a current Gen game. For that graphics the 3090 should push above 100 fps easily without DLSS.

This is just poorly optimized like its mostly the case with ubi titles

This is one of the reasons why I got out the PC gaming few years ago. The lowest common denominator. I find it simpler and way cheaper to play on consoles.

And why is this game so ugly? I am not sure, however I feel like previous games looked better. At least 2nd one, this game looks like a such a disaster. I am fan of 2nd one, I think it's better than GTA V...

Don't expect 60fps at 4K for many future games at ultra settings on these cards.

Why not? It's essentially a PS4/XB1 game, that looks like an upscaled/remastered PS360 title if you ask me. There's no reason the game with such graphics shouldn't run at 4K120 let alone 60, other than poor coding.

This game looks objectively worse than RDR2, yet it runs worse as well. That's not due to the developers' choices but is due to their poor programming. It's no coincidence that Assassin's Creed: Valhalla - another Ubisoft game - is also a technical failure.

I tried but it was 6:20am, mistakes happen, point still stands.

So what you’re saying is that the choices the developers made led to bad code and and overall bad game (on a technical level).

what a roundabout way of confirming what I literally just said.

Semantics. Your post implied that the end result was intentional, which is what I was criticizing.

Wait, where in that post did I imply it was on purpose? I clearly said it was the choices made by the developers that resulted in what they have. I never once said anything different or implied anything else. Maybe that’s what you read it as, but you’re wrong to suggest otherwise.

Saying that though, I’m being harsh on individual developers, they don’t make the decisions, management does so there’s that.

Basically, it’s just Ubi being Ubi.

Very silly, uninformed post. It's not meant primarily for gaming but it is definitely better at gaming than the 3080.
15% increase on a 3080 does not seem like a wise investment considering 24gb of memory will probably not be needed for a very long time and most games wont be coded to use that much memory
we are still at a point now where between 6-8 gb of memory is the entry level...going to be a long time before we get to 10 let along 24gb....by that time there will probably be faster cards with less memory and much cheaper

and as many have pointed out...this is Ubisoft

Future games not for Watch Dogs. If a game in future for XSX for example only achieves 30fps at 4K you will find it difficult or even impossible to get 60fps at 4K at ultra on a 3090. The gap between the consoles and top GPUs isn't big enough for a >2x rasterization improvement which is what you would be asking for at ultra settings.
