3D Audio is going to be a big deal on next gen consoles specially on headsets, based on devs praises 3D Audio on how it will work with DualSense Controller.

Some demos here to give a picture on 3D audio

For Steel Series headsets that supports PS5 3D audio

Wonderful! Let's have all the approved ones in this list! I preordered a Pulse 3D and already have Astro A40+Mixer. Gonna test both and see how they react.

yes, I got Arctis 7 it does support 3D Audio! let's go! we are so close to launch!

They have to be approved to work with the 3d audio. I thought the tech worked on any pair of headphones?

Every pair of stereo headphones supports 3D audio. The only issue with the PS5 is that it lacks an optical audio jack, so some wireless headsets won't be supported. Otherwise, anything that uses 3.5mm or USB (or wireless USB) will receive 3d audio just fine. Pulse 3D will also accept 3D audio from Xbox and Windows 10 (1703 or newer) using the 3.5mm jack. Windows, Xbox, and the PS5 all use the same middleware (Wwise) so the results will be pretty similar and games will be cross-platform compatible.

Why wouldn't ALL stereo headphones support it? That's the entire point, it's just stereo audio "shaped" in a way that makes it appear to come from more directions.

We actually only ever hear in stereo - we have just 2 ears - but the way the sound is distorted by our ear shape makes us able to distinguish more directions than just left/right. That's what this tech is trying to simulate. It's has nothing to do with "surround/3D audio headphones".

I'm doubtful they'll be able to make this work very well with stereo SPEAKERS though. They can't control how the sound waves look when entering your ear nearly as much in that case. But we'll see.

They do have a bigger challenge on thier hands, but they may have a trick up thier sleeve. By including a microphone in the ps5 controller, they could tell you to place it say 2 ft in front of your listening position a do a calibration for the room. Not an end all fix, but does give them a better chance of adjust for a wide variation of rooms.

It does support any headset that can plug in.

That's literally the only requirement lol

Sure, that's what all modern hi-fi receivers do. But the fake surround effects they try to create are never even close to the real thing.

I have a Sony one, so I'd assume there's some shared tech. It's a few years old though, and doesn't have the Tempest engine of course.

I feel that Sony has done a remarkable job making people buy into "3D audio". I also feel that in 5 years people are going to laugh at this marketing gimmick for what it was.

You better have the hardware to actually experience the sound as well as the space to accurately reproduce it. If you think you will get true 3D audio from headphones, then you've bought into hype. You're better off just getting quality headphones that dont market this nonsense.

I'm more interested on how they will work/sound on speakers. (2.1 not 5.2)

Who cares if it's real or not if your brain thinks it is?

My brain doesn't tell me that my "surround sound" headphones are surround sound. I can tell the difference between the two in a heartbeat as I have a true surround sound system in a large room in the basement.

I guess for those that don't have that luxury, this may seem like it is so I can accept your point.

This is pure market-speak though to drive console sales. I have a pair of their headphones ordered for the PS5 and will eat crow if they actually feel like 3D sound and not heavily processed nonsense

You can use those quality headphones for the 3D audio, too. Works with headsets that have 3.5mm.

On the PS5, you’ll be able to experience 3D Audio with the headphones that many of you already own, either through USB connection to the console, or by plugging your headphones into the DualSense wireless controller’s 3.5mm headset jack.

Just bought 6 USB C cables and a tons of converters so my Platinum won´t need that crap Micro USB ever again.

I´m all set, full type C.

My point was revolving around the inevitable "optimized to work with 3D audio" market speak we will begin to hear.

But yes, I will continue to use my current headphones. I purchased the PS5 ones for my son. I'm very curious to try those.

The issue is the quality of the HRTF scan, but it definitely is comparable with a good match of ear to HRTF (IMHO).

My pair of Sony wf-1000xm3 sound great and I hope they get officially supported - rather than me needing to do hdmi(from soundbar bluetooth)/3.5m jack to bluetooth repeater to use them. But trying the 360 audio test on the Android App for them, they sound amazing when the HRTF scan is good, and not much of an improvement over stereo with a poor scan.

IMHO Sony's only way around this problem is to provide a very involved DIY set of instructions for HRTF scanning, so that when people try to claim the feature is just marketing buzzwords, those using the tech successfully can validate that those that are failing have got a good HRTF.

The scanning feature provide in the Andorid App for use with my headphones is completely hit and miss - even though the images are upload for cloud analysis. Had I know this, I would have stuck with the images when I first did it, as the results were excellent.

Can Sonys Pulse 3D hooked up wireless to Series X? I will be using this headset on both (PS5)

My TV btw has bluetooth built in, connecting any gadget a breeze basically, but probably won't be getting a full next gen 3D audio experience connecting it through TV?

I have a 5.1 system too but I've already heard audio in headphones(pre recorded though) that made it sound like the audio was near your ear and moving all around you. It can be done.

My wife's uncle is a sound engineer and works on films and shows. He set up the surround sound system for us. It's quite a treat and we've definitely been spoiled in that department.

Can't wait to try this tech to see how our compares.

How many ears do you have? Most people have just two. But you claim you can hear 3D audio with your surround system. How is that possible if your ears only hear in stereo? Because your brain hears the small differences in the sound as it enters your ears from different directions and gets distorted by the shape of your head and ears, and it translates this into 3D sound coming from behind you, in front, above you, etc. Even though you're REALLY only hearing in stereo.

This process can be simulated using stereo audio by shaping the waveforms as your ears would, tricking the brain into thinking the sound is really coming from different 3D directions. But people's ears are different, which is why there will be different "ear settings" (and why the best results will be achieved by scanning your actual ears).

But yes, this can absolutely be done with clever enough audio processing. Which is why Sony has an entire hardware engine dedicated to it in the PS5.

Surround headphones are a very different thing (and pretty much a scam IMO).

I don't really know why that wouldn't work. As long as your TV just passes the stereo audio through with no additional processing the effect should work the same as if you're plugging directly into the PS5.

I said surround sound. Not 3D audio.

Surround sound is 3D audio (although Sony's solution should be able to simulate much more granular audio positions than a typical surround system).

Also, hilarious that that's the only thing in my entire post you found worth commenting. You clearly don't want to understand how this works.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Will things like my iPhone be able to have 3D audio one day?
My phone already has 3D Audio, so based on previous Apple implementations of existing technology...... probably iPhone 16?
This is not true. Surround sound doesn't cover from above or below.
That's not true either, the main difference with 3D audio and Surround Sound is 3D audio gives an illusion of multidirectional sound.
Surround Sound the audio is actually coming from multiple directions

An Atmos system does.

But I would say regular 5.1 or 7.1 surround is also 3D. Stereo is 2D, right? Or is that 1D? What is mono then, 0D? Hm, I guess that technically, yes, that would be accurate. Mono is a point (0D), stereo is a line (1D), surround is a plane (2D), etc. So, fine, regular surround isn't 3D.

But that wasn't the point. Replace "surround system" with "the real world" and read my original post again. You're hearing 3D audio using your stereo ears, and that effect can be simulated through audio processing of a stereo signal.

Thanks!! 🤜🤛 Sounds like everything gtg on my part and I'm all set. Keeping my 3D Pulse Pre-Order can't wait for it to arrive as BB order preparing for shipment.

Yeah. HRTF is real, grounded in physics and biology, and works.

It's kinda weird how strong of a reaction people have to the mere mention of surround sound in headphones, it's like they feel personally threatened or something.

Maybe it's the same people who loathe VR and have to tell you every time VR is brought up, even though they haven't tried it yet :messenger_tears_of_joy:

As the former owner of an Aureal 3D sound card in the 90`s, I can say that one can hear surround sound in headphones. Unfortunately the Aureal was only amazing in their demos. None of the games supporting the tech actually impressed me.
We'll see if Sony can transform this in something more than a marketing tool.

did i miss something? - i thought all Stereo Headsets even basic earpieces would be compatible with PS5s 3d Audio since its emulated within the Software to be 3d even on Stereo Speakers... For what i know real Surround headsets are the ones that may have combatibility issues since they have more than one speaker per Ear..

All will work, but not all are finely tweaked.

I will test my old Astro A40 through the DualSense.

The mixamp won't work, indeed, except if there is an adapter? So I'll test just the headset and compare it to Pulse 3D.

Some games won't support Tempest 3D Audio, so you would still need 7.1 Channel for those games. But through the Tempest all of them should work as Cerny stated, and as some good musicians around here that know about HRTF-based 3D stated. I would love to have IllegalLemon IllegalLemon Audiophile Audiophile thurnishaleygw thurnishaleygw travisktl travisktl join us here! They have so much knowledge about headsets and audio.

I just noticed that my Arctis 7 Steelseries are fully supported, awesome. I should really read threads more thoroughly.

I recommend them, as they also support surround sound on PC and are solid as a rock. I have the 2018 edition - well over two years old now and they're still practically brand new. My PS Platinum's fucking cracked at the joint after very light use over the course of about a year. They sounded great on the PS4 but man, they were like cheap toys in build quality.
