Xbox Series S “Will Not Limit the Potential” of Next-Gen Games / PS5 Lower CPU Performance Won’t Limit Devs – Vigor Dev

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is 900p on Series S, isn't it?
Yes, the engine is shit. Probably written by 50-60 year old software engineers.
1. Game was designed for Playstation 4. It is patched (poorly) for next gen systems. It is like running a backward compatible title.
2. PS4 does 900p 30fps and PS4 pro can only manage 1080p 30fps. The engine does not scale across different devices of same family.
3. Series S does half the resolution 2K at 30 fps mode. Hard not to defend it should do so even at 60fps mode since CPU's are the same.
4. Resolution on Ps5 is not yet confirmed, i will not be surprised if there are frame drops if ps5 is made to do 2K 60fps.

Dirt 5 did half the resolution. In next few weeks, other games like ACV, WDL, FC6, Cyberpunk will be confirmed. FUD will be laid to rest.

Just found out, that Series X has to go to 1080p in Frame Rate mode to maintain a 60 fps lock. This is the price to pay for running the dragon engine. 900p60fps on Series S is no shame for this game.

Interesting comments about ps5 frame rates stability.. didn't we saw another tweet about that too?

Im not sure why Cerny not clock the ps5 cpu to 3.6ghz and achieve parity on the cpu side, seems such a small design decision to make 🤷‍♀️
It would have compromised the small form factor.

No. I would not hang my hat on the systained clocks, its not going to age well.

AVX 256 is a CPU taxing thing not GPU. I dont think either console will be CPU limited this gen for the target frame rates and resolutions.

Zen2 avx2 works different from intel.
Zen2 will run avx2 at its base clocks.
I expect Series X to run sustained 3.6Ghz avx2, since thats the base clocks defined by MS.
PS5 on the other hand, Sony only specified variable up to 3.5Ghz.

Im thinking this may be the area developers were hinting about Cpu performance differences between them. 🤷‍♀️

You still dont understand smart shift, and what Cerny meant in that context, as Zen 2 at 5 Ghz and RDNA2 at 2.5 Ghz say hi.

Anyway, back on topic, XSS will not hold back games,

My concern is the 120 FPS targets, as those look terrible, and likely those games are targeting streaming market as much as last gen as 120 FPS low quality is easier to adopt to streaming.

You mean Zen3? Im sorry, but Zen3 overclocking freqency has less headroom than Zen2.

And 2.5Ghz Rdna2, lol, lets wait and see, the newest rumor throw that out of the window.

1080/60? Really? That must be one unoptimized game!

900/60 on Series S sounds REALLY impressive when you look at it through that lens

Cerny mentioned that without SmartShift they could only achieve 3GHz or so, so 3.5GHz is already quite a bump. Not that they knew what the Series X/S specs are gonna be to begin with. Anyway, given PS5 aims for 4K where the framerate is solely dependent on the GPU, whereas Series S will be a 1080p-1440p machine, where it's the CPU that's the bottleneck, I'm not so sure if the Series S slightly faster clock will be able to outperform the bigger console, I actually think in CPU intensive scenes it's the little console what will suffer the most.

Series S CPU is not faster. Series S is 3.4 ghz with 16 thread, PS5 3.5 ghz with 16 threads and XSX 3.6 with 16 threads

Doesnt limit cpu part but limits gpu(graphics)

Simple:
If S = 1080-1440p -> X = 4k
If X = 4k -> S = 1080-1440p
If X less than 4k (1440-1800p) -> S = under 1080p

Solution: limit X to 4k or near 4k, because S cant handle 1440p X game at 1080p.

Saying that it wont limit is same as saying all PC games take full advantage of 5000€ super gaming setups, and 500€ shitmachines wont limit that

Even if would be technically possible, split budget affects things and time limits.

But if X continues to wastw performance on native 4k, it works, yes

And how will gamers feel if their Xbox Series S game is running at dynamic 1080p (meaning 720p - 1080p)?

Gamers ? Budget players you mean ? You get what you pay for ..

I have a inferior Huawei Android phone , it does what I need it for .

I also have a IPhone.. it does what I paid for it .

You can’t wish for gold if you paid for bronze .

But people are expecting the XSS to be the best selling next-gen Xbox, so isn't that scary (considering what you just said)?

:messenger_tears_of_joy: (but you're right)

I replied with a laugh because in a different thread people have argued that Phil is wrong and he will really sell more Series X's. In the past two weeks I've learned that Phil is implying things he never said and avoids saying (whether certain games will be exclusive), and Phil is wrong when he says Series S will outsell Series X. A few people seem to be trusting in Phil except when he speaks or does not speak on an issue.

5 years from now will be EXTREMELY interesting to see how we view Phil pre-Xbox next-gen launch. He's said SOOOOO much stuff that he's bound to either be a profit or ridiculously stupid.

These threads never get as much attention as the negative ones predicting XSS will hold itself back, XSX, PS5 and even PS4,3,2, and of course 1. It's a simple concept that if the developer takes time to optimize and work with MS for support when needed the XSS will be just fine. It's great to give people who don't have lots a money a option to get new games without breaking the bank.

It's a variable clock as well, probably why there will be less stable frame rate.
