Article: here.

Anyone else just hate typing with on-screen keyboards? The PlayStation 4 is pretty good with this stuff, using a mixture of predictive text, gyroscopes, and even the touchpad to speed up the process – but it’s still a frustrating and cumbersome experience overall, isn’t it? The PlayStation 5 will solve that problem with speech dictation.

As you may already know, the DualSense includes a microphone which you can use for voice chat and the above mentioned feature. All you need to do is speak into your controller, and it’ll convert your message to text for you, ready to share on social media or send to friends. This functionality probably won’t be flawless, but it’s a great addition, isn’t it?

Thanks to the Dualsense controller the PS5 is getting speech dictation functionality found in smartphones etc. You're no longer locked to the screen keyboard or buying chatpad accessories to improve the experience. You can use this functionality for chatting but potentially it opens the door for commands as well while browsing the store or the U.I homepage etc, etc. In many ways it brings back memories of some Kinect functionalities, except you get that here with every PS5 out the box, in a much simpler way. Various languages will be supported although no official list has been revealed.

Are you excited about the new functionality? Is it a game changer considering your usage habits? You like the improvement despite not chatting much? You don't care at all? Discuss.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I'm not even joking - the PS5 Dualsense having a built in microphone and no removable battery means I'll be powering off my PS5 (rather than putting it in rest mode) and storing my controller in a cupboard when not using it.

The last few smart devices I've bought have voice dictation, Galaxy S10+, LG C9 etc and while it seems like a convenient feature in theory I always end up using my hands instead.

I don't know why but voice dictation just never seems like the efficient way of doing things....

Our brains believe it's faster if we type it than talk to a non-living device. I think it's behavioral. Yet, if you travel to Europe, you make use of it all the time to translate by voice.

Your wife hot? jk..

I would probably use it from time to time when sending quick messages to friends that I’m not in a voice chat with.

Since I literally did just that to make this post on my phone.

Cool. Using the messaging app on the PS4 was too slow for me to ever write anything extensive, and even whipping out my phone the current mobile app isn't amazing. Voice to text is an improvement if it works well.

I have a OG Rift and an Android phone, i'm pretty sure Google and Facebook know everything about me already. At leas sony knowing more would give me more relevant ads.

Fucking finally! Can't count how many times I've had to type a long ass tweet or message from the ps-4. My Lord. This is my most excited feature for sure!

No kinect level outrage of a monitoring device built into the console? A lot of people here got mad about its inclusion to the Xbox One like their civil liberties had been infringed on.
No. Because it is not the same thing. I you cannot understand that you need to educate yourself.

I don't care. No one talks to me. That's why I am buying a playstation.

Also, it better ask me for permission to use that mic and, if I say no, it should not prompt me every action I take like a second class citizen. No one needs money more than Sony Entertainment, they will sell my very valuable voice the first chance they get.

This is game changing. Sony always comes through with features, ones that no one asked for but are huge like share play.

I just hope the voice recognition is good like Google is.

We could always launch games but I use speech to text increasingly more all the time for everything except texting.

Now if I can purchase a Samuel L Jackson assistant for my PS5 Id be happy. I want every other word to be mother fu#%er.

Quality will dictate a lot. Lots of accents for the English language. I do wonder if it has an assistant - specially for the PS store.

Oh shit. I think I'm going to need you to educate me then. Both can be used as surveillance devices right?
Kinect was an always on device when it launched (it also has a camera). The microphone on the Dual Sense controller is not. The only time anyone can listen to you with the Dual Sense microphone is when you join a group chat. Even then, it is easily muted.

Great use of the built in mic, might end up being what people mostly use it for.

Of course it will all depend on how good the dictation is, and how many languages it competently supports.

another true game-changer wow

read my lips: I won't read text in the middle of a shootout when voice would be much better...

read my lips 2: stop with the gimmicks and implement VR mode in all FPS and racing games

Eh, to be honest, although I'm a Sony fan I'm not gonna do the fan thing and paint this as the work of the heavens. Speech to text is janky, i never use it, and anyway potential privacy etc.. whether the mic is on your controller or the console itself, this is no biggy to me.

they do have the similarities of a device being able to sense your environment. the controller is a default device, the kinect was an extra (after they removed it from being a default).

I can see a market for PS5 dual sense microphone covers.

Edit: the PS5 may be an internet required console. We have yet to hear confirmation that it doesn’t require an online connection to function.

While you had to buy the Kinect at the start of last gen for the Xbox One, at least you could unhook it. This shit is in every controller and you can't even use your old controllers.
