I found it strange too, but they skip matchmaking, character selection, and a countdown timer for team building. It's hard to tell what part of that is stage loading, as it exits into a pre-staging area anyway. Pause at 7:33 to see the countdown timer. Before that is team build, before that is character selection, and before that is matchmaking. If they really wanted to hide load times, they just wouldn't have shown the game. Not sure they have any other multiplayer 1st party titles to show, and DAS hasn't even had anything new shown of it outside of the reveal trailer.

Precisely the reason why the console needs to be handed to independent reviewers before the release. It's in the interest of the consumer.
It looks next-gen, I like the look and feel. Wish they had kept it simpler. I wanna see what games I can play and may be my progress bar for each of them. Not sure I want to see who started a multiplayer match in the middle of the screen. Let me look for that intentionally.
Does it do quick resume with more than one game?

If it's like the PS4 (which I'm assuming this was originally modeled from) then you won't be able to do a damn thing about that "explore" icon to the right of the store. The "Library" icon on the farthest right will always be there and in that same space. Everything else should be able to be ditched.

There's not even that much stuff on that screen that you mentioned.

Store, Explore (which won't be a thing for everyone and likely able to disable), 4 Games, PS Plus, PS Now, Library, Capture Gallery, and then the controller icon thing. Plus the menu showed the option to Customize on the bottom right corner at various times.

I really like the social features they have added/changed based on what I've see so far. Me and my friends play together a lot and constantly share videos and screenshots.

Hopefully folders are there from the start and not in a future update.

Looks fine! But all those "activities" things... Couldn't those be inside the game and not on the console ui? Could be kind of immersion breaking.

Aside from that the ui looks nice and clean.

Them being on the console UI is the whole point behind the activities system. It‘s supposed to animate you to go back right into your game with a specific challenge or mission loaded immediately.

It‘s like a push notification or widget on a smartphone, a way for the developer to reach you without having you playing their game.

Yeah this seems like a pointless complaint. It’s not a necessary feature- you don’t have to buy ps+ to use a guide. You have YouTube on your smartphone for Christ

It makes sense. It incentivizes devs to adopt the feature, if they can get a tiny slice of PS+ revenue for having it. Huge assumption there, but it definitely gives Sony some levers they can pull to entice adoption of certain features that are hidden. There's also the possibility that these help videos might be generated and hosted by Sony, in which case they incur additional cost to Sony, and they want to recoup that investment.

As others have asked, who doesn't have PS+? It's cheaper than pretty much every streaming platform, especially when you get one of the yearly plans on discount.

I got bored halfway through the vid and started skipping. The problem with all of this stuff, is that my impression so far is that everything they're so proud of here, will slow down my experience. The PS button not pausing the game is gonna be an annoyance to me. All this junk in the way is an annoyance. I really hope they add options to customize your menu to remove all this fluff, because I just don't care.

I'm a grown man with a family, all my friends are the same, none of us have time to sit and bother with social features. I sit down to play a game. Mostly on my own. That's it. People like me make up a very large portion of gamers who actually spend money, but we're not being catered to at all, which I find a bit odd.

Nothing wrong with that. Honestly I probably won't use the command centre functions either unless I'm trophy hunting. I'll just hop into the main menu as I always have. I'm just seeing it as an advanced quick menu from the ps4 and I only really use that for doing odd things like viewing trophy list.

Only thing I care is a wishlist on psstore and alerts for sales. This gen I would note the games and check prices regularly...

Maybe if you only record occasionally or just a few basic clips. Otherwise there's still no replacement for something like an Elgato. Plus it might be limited to 4k30. Hopefully there's an option for 1080p60.

I actually liked the XMB UI so I would have been happy with that.

Looks nice in general. I always found the PS4 UI somewhat sloppy.
Cards look like a potentially nice feature if well supported but we'll see. For me the leaner it looks the better. I just want to see awesome themes.

I hope we can still organize games. I liked having different folders for my PS4 games and my retro games.

The trophy progress bar is alsof very nice.

Don't like how dark it is, hopefully there are brighter themes offered at launch. Also, some preset UI templates would help in cutting out card congestion: "Social" for those who use all these sharing features and "Solo" for offline, single player focused users who don't care otherwise.

Overall, I'm really happy with this UI, looks really snappy and in 4k. Each game can be drilled down to the cards that let you load into specific parts of the game, like certain chapters or multiplayer.

It pretty much confirmed that single game suspend (rest mode) / resume is the same as PS4 which is fine for me. Seems games will load really fast anyway and you can jump to multiplayer etc to speed that up also.

This view looks almost exactly like the PS4 UI with the full library at the far right. Looks like you get 8 games and hopefully folders and pins to organize.

I’m a grown man with no family, but I work quite a bit and also could not give less of a fuck about social features. Never have used them, don’t really understand them. I would agree that turning all those notifications off would be really ideal - don’t need more notifications in my life I have an iPhone and it’s annoying enough as is.

That keeps you in the game. That's what I like the BEST about the new UI. You don't have to leave the game at all to do most things.

Yeah. It's overlaid over the entire screen. It doesn't "SNAP" half your screen in half.
