Xbox Series BC: 16x AF for all games, resolution and frame rate boosts

OP is exactly the same as a thread on REEE. What's the point of cross posting MS' marketing materials in both forums? Or did a REEer copy-paste your thread?

It's interesting but it's a copy and paste of MS text, like you wrote 'On the Xbox One, we were able to provide a curated list of titles'.

Well I don’t use that shitstain of a forum so I’d have missed it if it wasn’t posted here.

Well, I can already play these old games, I'm not spending $500 for a console to play games I can already play.

It's nice but I still think this is lacking from a strategy point of view. Although I guess they had no choice after Craig Infinite, no Forza, and a quite frankly terrible list of XSX console exclusives.
I own an OG Xbox One with a back log of games that will look better and play better on Series X. It's a must buy for me.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
This is awesome, but I wanna see more titles. No interest in X1 b.c., but high interest in Xbox and 360 b.c.

The fine print on all this b.c. stuff on Xbox is that a huge chunk of games aren't included.
Word is that the BC team is shifting back to 360 and OG development once the Series consoles launch. It'd be nice to get back to the glory days where we get a few new titles every week.

Guys this is BIG!!! The texture quality going to 16X can't be understated! It's a massive improvement over the quality of the texture. This is one of the reasons why PC versions of the multiplat games look so much better than their console equivalents.

Nice move for MSFT!
Antroscopic filtering doesnt get enough recognition when it comes to graphic techniques that improve visuals. 16xAF can make a game look considerably better, especially a game that has a lot of flat surfaces.
I always have 16xAF on by default in Nvidia control panel.

Absolutely. It makes a game like Horizon look significantly better than the PS4 version even though the texture resolution hasn't changed.

Control probably the worst performing game I have played this gen. I had to quit it a few times due to frame rate issues. Thankfully it has been confirmed to run at 60 fps locked on the XsX.

fucking hell, they're finally making Cloud Saves free on 360... that was about time.
cloud saves have been free on Xbox One and PC since the One launched, it always was weird to me that the 360 still needed a XBLG account to use cloud saves... especially since 360 games on Xbox One also have free cloud saves... this made no sense.

I have some secondary accounts on 360 that I played on and still have save files on I would love to bring forward, but I'm not paying to transfer a handful of save files from a secondary account to my Xbox One... so good that it's finally free now

But you have to buy it again

lol @ those HDR-comparision-pictures. Reminds me of monitor-product-pages. You cannot show the HDR-difference with SDR-pictures. You just cant.

Auto-HDR still seems quite cool and overall Series X BC seems to be well thought out and integrated.

But for me personally not too relevant. I am looking forward to the new stuff. m

Remember DVD movies coming with promo material for Blu-ray's 🤣

almost none of the games i enjoy on original xbox or 360 are on the BC list; i don't see them adding the more obscure titles. This has always been for people who play AAA games from the past and the like.

Why mention no boost mode toggle lol. Really desperate marketing point. In the end PS5 does the same thing by improving PS4 titles. Why does it matter that the option is there? At least Sony gives you a choice to use it or not.

Why would you want a choice? The only reason there was a choice previously was because it had the potential to cause bugs and glitches.

Oh man I wonder what the Series X will do for combat sequences in Bioshock Infinite? The framerate would get real low at times.

I usually play through all the Halo and Bioshock games once a year. These enhancements are going to make that experience sooooo much better. Can't wait.

the difference is that the Series X|S lets back compat games simply run on the whole hardware.
games use the full GPU.

the way it works on PS5 is that games use the same amount of CUs as they originally did. meaning PS4 games will use 18CUs and Pro games will use 36CUs.
and if they don't support boost mode they will also run at their normal clock speeds.

that is not the case on Series X|S where all games run at max clock speeds and all the CUs of the system, giving them the power of a 12TF GCN gpu. apparently the GPU has a sort of back compat mode where it functions like a GCN gpu while playing back compat games so they will not get the RDNA2 performance gains, which is the only real downside of the back compat method Microsoft is using.

This is ridiculously good news. Me buying Xbox one before PS4 is finally paying off as I have bought most of my games for Xbox.

Hardly any games, if at all, had any issues with Pro boost mode. That was something Sony said just to keep them safe if anything wrong did happen. Which more often than not, doesn’t.

I don’t get why MS feels the need to take jabs where none are needed. PS5 has game boost options. Uhhhh.......Ok? Good?

The outcome is the same.

Good but Fallout 4 is crap not a legendary title. New Vegas is a legendary one but Microsoft refused to enhance it....

Xbox is the best option to play old games....PS5 could be for new ones regarding exclusives.

I started replaying Midnight Club Los Angeles yesterday on my 1X. I can't remember if it's the case on the OG 360, but damn these loading times are fast. I would kill for a 60 fps update.

I wonder how many OG and 360 games will eventually be BC on these consoles? If GTA IV is, then not really a reason GTA3/VC can't be since I'm sure the music licenses have surely expired for GTA IV as well.

there are newer versions of all of them where some songs have been removed.
they even literally patched out songs in GTA4 even if you already bought it.

Why would you keep a 360 and a xbox one around? More mess, more cables, plus playing inferior versions of games?
I sold my xbox one x for $400, paid for 2/3 of my series X.

So for the S, we get some frame doubling for fallout 4, which is cool. But what if we wanted 1440p?

Also is this now confirmed, backwards compatibility wise, the s will only do 1080p?
I guess that is ok, I can't help feeling a bit let down by it considering the machine can do so much more.

Series X will be amazing for back compat though.

if games are not patched on Series S then they will run in Xbox One S mode (yes there is a difference between Base Xbox One mode and One S mode, Doom 64 runs at 1440p on One S for example)

backwards compatible Xbox 360 games that were previously enhanced for One X, like Assassin's Creed or Mirror's Edge, on the other hand will receive a boost to up to 1440p, a 4x res boost basically (if the game was 720p it will run at 1440p)

Well it is 60fps on the Pro. Patch 1.11 added that.

first of all, it's not really 60fps, it's more like 40 to 50 fps in most scenes.
second of all, it was never patched on One X sadly. the Pro patch was released before the One X was oj the market and I guess they didn't bother to do the same later on One X

I wonder how auto HDR works on X/S.
My TV already has SDR to HDR conversion. Is it different?

it's most likely way better than what TVs do since it will use better hardware and better AI to add the HDR.
what TVs usually do is simply stretching the SDR brightness/contrast range onto the HDR range, so bright stuff looks brighter and dark stuff looks darker.

what this auto HDR does here is it looks at the image and tries to determine which objects would actually glow brighter and which parts would be darker, based on example images the AI studied

Yes, very different and much more accurate, I've done a few posts detailing how it's different before in other HDR threads.

edeit: Here's the quick breakdown...
"With games everything is usually compressed down into rec.709 colour space and SDR ranges before being sent to output. What this method does is take that raw signal, which will already have a wider colour gamut and then use the games lighting engine combined with AI learning to calculate how it should look in rec.2020 and HDR (set manually at 1,000 nits vs. SDR's 200 nits). Meaning you're getting a much more "accurate" representation of what the HDR and colour space should be compared to how a TV would handle it, it'd also mean less input latency as the console is handling it natively instead of the TV having to scan through it. "
