PS5 Teardown: An inside look at our most transformative console yet

You guys are trying to pretend that Sony doing a teardown themselves is a display of transparency or something? Of course Sony isn't going to criticize their own product, that's the whole point of letting others do a teardown lol.

Not at all I was saying what your saying like they want it controlled and they know everyone wants DF to do one (I personally can't stand DF but again to each their own)

I am not very knowledgeable technologically, but this looks more advanced than something NASA would build.

You need a firmware update.

Looking at the industrial design and the tear down reinforces my believe that this console is being sold at a huge loss, but since people wanted a console for 500€ max, they gave it to us at the expense of paying 80€ per game to recoup the loss.

Boys be careful of what you want, your wishes can become true, but you never know at what cost.........

Because they are the big dogs when it comes to tear downs I thought?

Gamers nexus do tear downs but I'd never seen digital foundry do anything like thst before but I definitely could be wrong.

Digital foundry do performance and quality analysis I thought.

Ah, this is what I probably heard that made me think that the PS5 storage was proprietary.

It is. The question is can they make the expansion drives function the same through a firmware update once this level drive is released on the market.

Speaking from a marketing and communications perspective, this presentation of this teardown is absolutely perfect.

A calm Japanese man in a smart shirt (all screams 'expert!'), sitting in a clean room, slowly and confidently showing us every important aspect of the Playstation's construction.

No screaming YouTubers. No idiotic, paid off influencers. No need to overplay or exaggerate. Just a straight forward presentation that shows everyone just how well designed the inside of the console is.

And 'liquid metal cooling' will sell an extra few million consoles. Mark my fucking words.

And most importantly, no stupid expression in the thumbnail.

Just watched the video and... JFC... liquid metal? REALLY? IN A F*CKING CONSOLE???? Is Sony really THAT stupid?

Liquid metal is an excellent TIM, HOWEVER, it comes with GREAT risks, mostly involving its electric conductivity. If the console is standing or on its side permanently, with no movement at all, there is no problem using it as a TIM and in fact it's a great choice. However, if you move the console around (which happens a lot with kids and people going from one place to another), you risk the APU to short-circuit with other parts because of the liquid metal leakage.

Also, liquid metal corrodes the heatsink metal, even if it's copper-based, so it requires constant manteinance (at least checking every year in order to check wether it has or hasn't corroded the heatsink enough). In the PC world, that's a usual thing among enthusiasts. In the console world? not at all.

Mark my words: there will be a lot of complaints about liquid metal leakage and motherboards short-circuited because of the console movement.

If you plan on getting a PS5, just keep it still in one place and do a regular yearly manteinance job on the heatsink and all will be fine. =)
In this post: Multi-billion dollar corporation that hired some of the best engineers for the project has no idea what it’s doing!

Sweet, looks awesome. One question for anyone in the know - I reapplied thermal paste to my PS4 and the RAM chips also had thermal pads on them, but they seem clean on the PS5 - are there no pads? Does it use the heatsink as well?

Edit: PS5

PS5 looks over-engineered on the inside and over-designed on the outside.

A stand needed for horizontal mode? Now that we look the inside we know it is because the fan is tick.

I don't like the idea of the fan position, it doesn't have direct exposure, the plates get in their way

Love the possibility of changing plates

I agree with the bolded for the most part. They wanted to keep the console form factor while staying quiet which meant compromises. Although, I imagine it would have been even larger without some of their elaborate engineering choices. It definitely could have been smaller in volume if they went for a non traditional shape like the XSX.

I wouldn't worry about the plates being in the way because centrifugal fans like the one in the ps5 aren't nearly as badly affected by close obstructions as axial fans are and will pull in air just fine. The fan won't just blow really hard, it will be a great sucker too.

1. Detach the stand via the screw.
2. Remove the side plate.
3. Unscrew the NVMe cover.
4. Insert the NVMe.
5. Screw the cover back on.
6. Put the plate back on.
7. Screw your stand back on.

VS

1. Insert the Seagate NVMe.

One is more elegant, easier and simpler to do then the other. Note however, I didn't say better then the other. Because while the PS5 method is more complicated to do, it gives you the freedom of choice and likely cheaper SSD prices in the future, assuming the Seagate drive does not drop in price (which is unlikely or might take a while, console accessories always are sold at a premium).

My personal preference is the PS5 way as I can buy a 2TB off the bat (Samsung 980) and reuse it for my PC if I ever need to (such as eventually upgrading to a 4TB SSD). With the Xbox when they release a 2TB card, my 1TB card would only be useful as a backup or to keep some older games on it.

Great post. I just think its going to be interesting when casuals/soccer moms(majority of game sales lol) want to expand the storage and have to resort to taking the thing apart.

I don't mind either way(Xbox Or Sonys) but I just think thats going to be interesting.

So we have to open it up to expand storage? Not exactly ideal.

But what about hooking up a external SSD via USB? If we install next gen only games on that, can we play them that way? Or is it like Xbox Series X where it's solely BC games to will boot from it?

I haven't been following the PS5 news much, so I'm sure this is old news. But that's what I want to know.

Sony patented some liquid metal 'capsule' design so it looks like you'll not have to replace it like poorly applied thermal paste.

Is it just me or does anybody feel like sony just said fuck DF and did their own on purpose?

Side note I don't understand why people care about this type of thing as long as the fucker turns on and plays my games good for it lol but to each their own I guess.
This is consistent with their previous console teardowns, even the same engineer presenting. So...no, SONY is just doing the same thing they always have.

Looks awesome, I'm liking the look of the console now more than a month ago.
I hope Sony doesn't lose its momentum and keeps bringing more info on PS5.

This is pretty cool. Easy to add a SSD and to clean the console. Since I'm not an engineer, can't say much about the inner components of the console, though I can say I actually thought it was interesting and impressive.

Very nice teardown, sleek and classy.

Now they need to produce ASAP a Metal Gear Solid remake with a Metal Solid/Liquid Cooling Special edition PS5 :messenger_smiling_hearts:

Also I had to watch a few times, but there was a heat pipe in that first cover shield, and did you see the vias at the back of the APU.

Ps5 APU is cooled both sides in effect, its hard to catch, and matches the patent. There is a small cooling of the die on the back as well as the front.

Huge.

Called it.

You mean this? Because it looks like MLC Cap array, but I could be wrong...

How many soccer moms were deterred by the PS4 HDD swap?

Its a massive heatsink but its not liquid or a vapour chamber................sorry folks i think we are in for a jet engine again
Spoken like someone who hears a term like vapor chamber being tossed around and thinks it’s the end all be all of technology. Same with all the people talking about TF when they have no clue what it actually means.

If vapor chambers were the only way going forward then we would see it being used everywhere.

Everybody thinks they know better then some of the best engineers in the world.

Suffers from extreme PDS
Switching the stand is ridiculous and that heat sink is ginormous. They definitely played it safe with the design and you can tell with this tear down. They can’t have a repeat of the PS4 jet engine debacle which is why the console is massive.
