PS5 Teardown: An inside look at our most transformative console yet

This one line at the end confused me. So... the existence of those dust collection holes does not mean that the PS5 WILL collect dust?
What's confusing about that? It means its dust which are tiny particles that can get anywhere regardless of how tight you make something. The dust catcher is there to catch some of the dust and prevent dust buildup inside the console but it will not prevent 100% of all dust being pushed through the fan from entering the rest of the console.

it is there to prevent this from happening and make it easy to clean out without having to teardown the console.

About the liquid metal :

They've got some kind of foam / plastic frame they're placing over the chip to possibly ;
a) protect the components around the APU
b) potentially create a seal around the APU to prevent it from drying out

They've also got some kind of black layer over the copper heatsink ... preventing direct contact with copper itself which I've heard is a problem with liquid metal.

So it's not quite the same as a 'clear nail polish' at home job. Perhaps they've done the research.

That's a big boy right there xD.

Anyways, nice teardown. They put a lot of thought into the construction, and it does get points for having a removable stand ;) Also it seems like those white "faceplates" (maybe we call them bodyplates?) are going to open up some customization options in the future similar to 360's faceplates from back in the day. That aught to be neat.

Some parts of the system are larger than I anticipated they'd be, and other parts kinda confirm for me certain things regarding some specifications. Aesthetically the system's actually quite nice-looking, I just kinda wish the actual size weren't such a behemoth.

Did they say anything about how the expandable NVMe drive will keep cool? From the teardown I don't think I noticed any spots for air to flow through to keep the optional drive cooled. Also found it really interesting that their NAND is 3 blocks of 256 GB (2 Tb) modules and not the 12x 64 GB modules I was led to believe. Maybe they're using muxed multi-channel NAND modules? Curious how the actual channel setup is in practice in terms of parallelism, i.e maybe it's 4 channels muxed to a single connection and that then connects with the flash memory controller (hence why I mentioned muxed multi-channel NAND a bit earlier).

This was a nice surprise for a random Wednesday morning. I wonder if they'll do a controller teardown in the near future.

you can't just insert any M2 drive that you see. I don't think that there are any compatible drives on the market right now...

Ah, this is what I probably heard that made me think that the PS5 storage was proprietary.

You do realize "moving some serious air" isn't always a positive, moving air creates noise too, especially when it's exhausted from tiny vents.
Sure, but most fans aren't this deep or large. Fan looks like it can move a substantial amount of air from deep within the case at a lower speed. This should keep the noise down. The question will be how hot that heatsink gets over time and if the fan can keep up at a lower speed. These aren't 4TF machines.

Love this video. Really happy to see an official one, and that it looks incredibly easy to service. Forgot that the PS5 also uses Wifi 6 and BT 5.1, that's awesome.

That thing that was special about the SSD was the speed and the custom I/O used. If it’s just the speed then they would just require a minimum of 5.5gb/s ssds for the 3rd party ones. Since that’s not the case they require a much faster ssd likely in the 7gb/s range which is cutting edge in consumer ssds.

Basically, they’re doing more with less.

Now why is this a big deal? Because SSDs that fulfill those requirements are hella expensive. Sony is banking on the trend that SSDs are becoming less expensive year-over-year so by the time you actually need an expansion slot, it’ll be less expensive.

You need cooling for these super fast SSDs too, in a PC it's cooled because of their design. This SSD seems to be out on it's own maybe away from the major cooling. Perhaps this is a thermal consideration.

It is really cool. I enjoyed watching that.
Now the only thing missing is the UI, I hope they can save it for us to discover it and experience it first hand, nowadays we are experiencing everything through other people's eyes and thoughts.
I wont mind having a deep dive after a week or so to grasp the full functionality.

PS5 looks over-engineered on the inside and over-designed on the outside.

A stand needed for horizontal mode? Now that we look the inside we know it is because the fan is tick.

I don't like the idea of the fan position, it doesn't have direct exposure, the plates get in their way

Love the possibility of changing plates

1. Detach the stand via the screw.
2. Remove the side plate.
3. Unscrew the NVMe cover.
4. Insert the NVMe.
5. Screw the cover back on.
6. Put the plate back on.
7. Screw your stand back on.

VS

1. Insert the Seagate NVMe.

One is more elegant, easier and simpler to do then the other. Note however, I didn't say better then the other. Because while the PS5 method is more complicated to do, it gives you the freedom of choice and likely cheaper SSD prices in the future, assuming the Seagate drive does not drop in price (which is unlikely or might take a while, console accessories always are sold at a premium).

My personal preference is the PS5 way as I can buy a 2TB off the bat (Samsung 980) and reuse it for my PC if I ever need to (such as eventually upgrading to a 4TB SSD). With the Xbox when they release a 2TB card, my 1TB card would only be useful as a backup or to keep some older games on it.

The PS5 method is non-proprietary and will save me dozens of euro.

Is it just me or does anybody feel like sony just said fuck DF and did their own on purpose?

Side note I don't understand why people care about this type of thing as long as the fucker turns on and plays my games good for it lol but to each their own I guess.

A lot of PCs still use either external heatsinks on the drives or have one built into the motherboard. My MB has a heatsink built into it with fans for the NVME drives. I'd bet people are going to smoke drives by buying cheaper ones without a heatsink when they add to this console. There is no place for the heat to go in the upgrade compartment.

This thing is really huge or the man is really small :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Well, I really think that this thing costs much more than $499. Even the cooler with all that chopper isn't cheap.
A really large motherboard with lots of space on it, used as separator for the 2 air streams ...
The large cooler
The large case
A large power supply (350W seems a bit large for the small chip).
Somehow really large Nand chips for their "small" capacity.

definitely not cheap.

Sony always do this, also why mention digital foundry they weren't the only ones doing videos with the xbox series x.

You guys are trying to pretend that Sony doing a teardown themselves is a display of transparency or something? Of course Sony isn't going to criticize their own product, that's the whole point of letting others do a teardown lol.

I still want a PS5 and I'll keep my PS5 preorder but it's clear to me that Sony has been outengineered on this one. Just look at how long it takes to disassemble/reassemble both consoles and it's clear as day.
One I wouldn't even attempt to reassemble and the other one fits together like lego bricks.
It's also clear which one will be cooler and better ventilated. Forget that liquid metal keyword and just look at the air flow, never mind where the highest clocks are.
Sony will have to rely on the quality of its exclusive games more than ever this generation. I personally hope they are otherwordly. R&C looks like a good start but there better be more and better coming.

Every thread..

160.3cm

According to Japan's National Health and Nutrition Survey, the average height was still only 160.3cm (5'2”) for men and 148.9cm (4'9”) for women – that's an increase of about 10 centimeters in the span of almost 70 years.

but yeah, she's a sturdy gal!
