PS5 Teardown: An inside look at our most transformative console yet

Just watched the video and... JFC... liquid metal? REALLY? IN A F*CKING CONSOLE???? Is Sony really THAT stupid?

Liquid metal is an excellent TIM, HOWEVER, it comes with GREAT risks, mostly involving its electric conductivity. If the console is standing or on its side permanently, with no movement at all, there is no problem using it as a TIM and in fact it's a great choice. However, if you move the console around (which happens a lot with kids and people going from one place to another), you risk the APU to short-circuit with other parts because of the liquid metal leakage.

Also, liquid metal corrodes the heatsink metal, even if it's copper-based, so it requires constant manteinance (at least checking every year in order to check wether it has or hasn't corroded the heatsink enough). In the PC world, that's a usual thing among enthusiasts. In the console world? not at all.

Mark my words: there will be a lot of complaints about liquid metal leakage and motherboards short-circuited because of the console movement.

If you plan on getting a PS5, just keep it still in one place and do a regular yearly manteinance job on the heatsink and all will be fine. =)
Sony patents say they have a compound that settles in a semi-solid state at room temperatures and liquefies when the internal temps hit over 30 celsius or something along those lines.

Idk why people act like Cerny & the Engineering team at PS are some sort of rich hobbyists who just toss this stuff in because they have money to burn and heard it was good. They spent years working out how to implement that alone.

I think upright position looks great but it’s bad for dust since it falls directly into the vents so I’ll go with horizontal.

Also, overall, console looks beautiful and well-designed. Huge, yes, but it is needed for cooling so no issue.

I've seen the tear down multiple times now, it looks great and masterfully engineered. One thing I didn't get was this small little knob thingie that the engineer puts back on the rear of the console. He takes something off the base stand and inserts it in the black rear part of the console.
That plugs the screw hole for the base. Likely just for those who worry about dust getting in that way.

It’s just for cosmetic. It just plugs in the hole that‘s for used when the console is vertical so you don’t have a big gaping hole when you put the console horizontally.

So the other thing is...This confirms that Russian leak? The black cowling, the fan shroud, that was all exactly right.

Unless someone got REALLY creative seeing an assembly line. But that's a lot of effort for 100 euros.

Nice! That liquid metal is sweet. It is a big unit though, still not sure where that is going to fit next month, but cannot wait!

Why do you say the bolded? Why is it better than radial fans?

Pushing / Pulling air through heat sink load and thin fins, its a pressure thing.

Thats a big 45 mm thick centrifugal fan, go read up on fans and pressure / loads

It creates a high pressure and a more steady flow than low pressure axial.

Can PS5 games run off that M.2 expansion? Or is it just for PS4 and storage?
Yes it can.
But you need to put a SSD with speed over the 5.5GB/s.
Sony will release a list with the SSDs that are faster enough to run PS5 games.

120mm fan CONFIRMED, so it'll be quiet for the first few months, give is 6, then when the bearings get a bit older, you'll get your jet engine/dust buster.

Dust vacuum out points are interesting, typically you're supposed to blow dust out as vacuuming could create some electrostatic.

That SSD expansion slot looks like it's off on it's own, so it might receive only minimal cooling from all that air flow that's happening, this is odd and maybe bad, these SSDs do get hot.

Ah, that's cool. Thanks.

(I was under the impression that PS5 games needed a special type, like the internal one)
It does have a requirement. There‘s a minimum speed for 3rd party ssds that Sony will probably publish soon. Other than that, as long as it fits the slot then they’re good to go.

So um, this guy appeared to have exactly the right look for the fan shroud and black heatsink cowling. Unless he got REALLY creative just seeing an assembly line or something, seems like this was real.

You have to be trolling at this point, right? It’s been explained a million times since March.

No. I was told that the PS5 was using a special new SSD that was unlike anything else on the market.

Seriously, did I imagine that entire week of people raving about it? What's happening? :/

Mate, I've got a TV the size of a house on my wall. My stupid fucking PC tower is enormous. I have an air purifier that's the size of a fat dalek.

Nobody is getting put off by the size of the Ps5.
Face it, us enthusiasts would buy it no matter what, but I'm talking about the general populous. The PS5 has to be the biggest console ever.

That guy pics were proved real before.
That is where started all the speculations about the fans (even dual).

Fan looks like it can move some serious air. M2 slot looks big enough to accommodate heatsinks, which is good because they get super hot. Heatsink in a monster, wonder how much this beast weighs.

I love seeing breakdown videos. Really cool of them to do this!

Those thicc fans and heatsink. Wow. I'd certainly hope this thing wouldn't run hot with those parts, haha.

😂 C’mon you are not fooling anyone with that.

This one line at the end confused me. So... the existence of those dust collection holes does not mean that the PS5 WILL collect dust?

It doesn't guarantee your PS5 won't collect dust.
You still needs to clean it regularly like any other device if you wish to remove the dust... the dust catcher just help.

Edit - Fixed the won to won't.

I still hate the ugly ass design, but this was quite nice to see. I might be warming up to it a little bit. Now, be silent!

That translation :messenger_grinning_sweat:

It says the dust catcher is not guranteed to not clog from dust or garbage.

Edit: Was beat to it.

So it sounds like any PCI 4.0 SSD as long as it fits?

I wonder if those Corsair ones with the big heatsink will fit.
If by "any" you mean "at least 7GBps to account for the standard having only two levels of priority, and thus having to be faster than the built-in drive", then yes.

You do realize "moving some serious air" isn't always a positive, moving air creates noise too, especially when it's exhausted from tiny vents.

It's easy to be skeptical of Sony's "quiet" claims, as the machines ship quiet, but after normal usage wear quickly... like the PS4 Pro.

At least he doesn't hide it at this point.

Though how he thinks it's good journo optics to post that with a pfp of him cuddling his Series X is beyond me. :messenger_grinning_squinting:
There's no doubt that he's on the Xbox side of the fence. Even so, the PS5 is absolutely massive, is he not allowed to notice?

100% sure that ps5 games will run off that expansion SSD. The drive has to be compatible though, you can't just insert any M2 drive that you see. I don't think that there are any compatible drives on the market right now... (because the soldered PS5 SSD is just so freaking fast)

But that shouldn't be a problem as time moves on and M2 drives become much cheaper and hold more data. Definitely like Sonys approach to the storage problem.

It's a plastic cover to seal up the hole where the screw goes for vertical orientation.

EDIT: Answered above.

That thing that was special about the SSD was the speed and the custom I/O used. If it’s just the speed then they would just require a minimum of 5.5gb/s ssds for the 3rd party ones. Since that’s not the case they require a much faster ssd likely in the 7gb/s range which is cutting edge in consumer ssds.

Basically, they’re doing more with less.

Now why is this a big deal? Because SSDs that fulfill those requirements are hella expensive. Sony is banking on the trend that SSDs are becoming less expensive year-over-year so by the time you actually need an expansion slot, it’ll be less expensive.
