PS5 Teardown: An inside look at our most transformative console yet

This is great that they are putting it all out there. Its been awhile since I really cared to learn about what was under the hood.

It reminds me of the "journalists" who review MacBooks... "It's made of metal - solid build, great quality" while inside they have cpu data lines running parallel 5 millimeters away from full power lines and if you get a short there it fries the CPU. Quality laptop my ass.
100%, all they have enough expertise to do is judge aesthetics and ergonomics, nothing that is actual engineering... it'll be some day when I hear one of them discussing material science... not that I know anything much about it but I have friends in those fields.

1. Detach the stand via the screw.
2. Remove the side plate.
3. Unscrew the NVMe cover.
4. Insert the NVMe.
5. Screw the cover back on.
6. Put the plate back on.
7. Screw your stand back on.

VS

1. Insert the Seagate NVMe.

One is more elegant, easier and simpler to do then the other. Note however, I didn't say better then the other. Because while the PS5 method is more complicated to do, it gives you the freedom of choice and likely cheaper SSD prices in the future, assuming the Seagate drive does not drop in price (which is unlikely or might take a while, console accessories always are sold at a premium).

My personal preference is the PS5 way as I can buy a 2TB off the bat (Samsung 980) and reuse it for my PC if I ever need to (such as eventually upgrading to a 4TB SSD). With the Xbox when they release a 2TB card, my 1TB card would only be useful as a backup or to keep some older games on it.

Cheaper and not too hard vs more expensive and easier. People will complain either way until the technology is invented where, when you think about changing it someone magically appears in your home, changes it for you, pours you a drink and makes you a steak and then leaves. All without saying a word.

So good.

I don’t know. Most complaints about ps4 were the noise. This is part of the solution on how the PS5 will run quiet

If he'd said 'it will make it quiet and more people will buy it because it's quiet' then maybe, but he specifically said people will buy into the buzzword and it will sell a couple of million more units on that alone. Which is ridiculous.

My PS4 Pro is annoyingly loud, so I hope it is quieter. I'm still buying it anyway. The size is the thing that's making me wonder about cancelling. I won't, but it's definitely making the thought enter my mind. It's way too big for a console. Embarrassingly so.

Not really, it was designed witha centrifugal fan that is through the whole console and will shift significantly more air than radial at same speeds, much much more its not even on teh same spec sheet.

This is a high air flow volume fan beter than what we normally see in electronics..

In industry these are more common as they perform better, much better than radial - to put one in a console is just fantastic more than I dreamed.

REVOLUTIONARY.

Why do you say the bolded? Why is it better than radial fans?

Unfortunately...no confirmation if it has physical power / eject buttons, or whether they are shitty, shitty, shitty, fucking garbage useless pieces of shit capacitive buttons (yeah, you can tell I hate capacitive buttons...)

Buttons are physical
You will not get an english version, this is how Sony did even with the PS4 Pro teardown. A Japanese hardware engineer did the teardown while speaking in Japanese.

You have subtitles available

I went with the digital edition. It's going in a well ventilated cabinet. The only thing I will really touch or (ever see) is the Dual Sense.

No worries I felt no offense and I can tell you are decent and genuine. I am used to much worse from some Neogaf people and nobody ever managed to penetrate my skin.

I don't mean emotional as in that I actually have tears rolling down my cheeks, but that it makes me happy to see this video because it is well done and the console looks premium and I am looking forward to playing on it. I don't see it as a fault, but as me looking forward to be happy with it and the design of the PS5 looks to cause me less headaches than the loud PS4.

I didnt watch the video but I am excited for the PS5. I primarily game on Xbox but Sony always pulls me in with their amazing exclusives. I am also excited to see what their new SSD tech is going to do for gaming overall.

Sony is in a great position to continue their market dominance going into next gen.

The console breaths quality from every side. PS4 was an improvement vs PS3 but PS5 its a big jump.
I feel otherwise about PS3->PS4, if we are talking about launch consoles. The OG 60GB PS3 just oozed quality. PS4 was a rather basic plastic box. I do agree if you are referring to the 3rd revision of the PS3, that thing was terrible.

PS5 has that same feeling of quality that the PS3 60GB launch edition had.

Buttons are physical

There's no guarantee. I've had plenty of devices before where there's been a physical bump, but the button is still capacitive. In fact I've got a heater right next to me that's exactly as I described.

I really wanted him to show it in more detail. Sony's last two consoles have used this trash (PS3 and PS4 launch models) so I wouldn't put it past them.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I'm not sure people know how many PS3 editions there were.

I thought it was implied but maybe not. But I think it’s a given considering how many people complained about the ps4 fans and noise that this could put people over the top to buy the console. They took the steps to address a big issue from last gen. Still can’t get in board with not buying a console because of its size when especially when a big part of why it’s this size IS the cooling solution

wow it really is HUGE

do you need to keep the side panels on? can you just toss them?

The SSD expansion slot is pretty big to like 99% of the M.2 SSDs in the market.
Even the ones that have some type of cooling inside the RAM chips.

Also, it's an expansion slot. Even after installing the extra SSD, the internal one stays usable. Testing any IO performance differences will be interesting.

I hate the color, but my goddess that thing is a beautifully designed/engineered in and out. I love when companies design products that can easily get into without the need of pry tools and hammers to crack it open like some thief.

Were paying 500 quid for what's mostly a heatsink?

Just watched the video and... JFC... liquid metal? REALLY? IN A F*CKING CONSOLE???? Is Sony really THAT stupid?

Liquid metal is an excellent TIM, HOWEVER, it comes with GREAT risks, mostly involving its electric conductivity. If the console is standing or on its side permanently, with no movement at all, there is no problem using it as a TIM and in fact it's a great choice. However, if you move the console around (which happens a lot with kids and people going from one place to another), you risk the APU to short-circuit with other parts because of the liquid metal leakage.

Also, liquid metal corrodes the heatsink metal, even if it's copper-based, so it requires constant manteinance (at least checking every year in order to check wether it has or hasn't corroded the heatsink enough). In the PC world, that's a usual thing among enthusiasts. In the console world? not at all.

Mark my words: there will be a lot of complaints about liquid metal leakage and motherboards short-circuited because of the console movement.

If you plan on getting a PS5, just keep it still in one place and do a regular yearly manteinance job on the heatsink and all will be fine. =)

It's not liquid cooling, it's air cooling with liquid metal instead of paste to provide 100% sync between the die and the heatsink resulting usually superior cooling than anything else. You can use liquid cooling with it as well.

That's liquid cooling.

This is the video you're looking for:

I am fucking idiot, because I wanted to link the video in your ( GHG GHG ) post.

Sorry about this situation.

How the fuck am I going to convince my wife to put this fridge in our small living room next to the TV remains a mistery...

Or a nice bracelet or ring. Something pretty in exchange for bringing a monstrosity into the house.

Not really. The Sony patents have detailed methods in order for those not to happen.

Looking back at the XSX, you might be right about the depth. The PS5 still looks to have a more densely packed fin array though, so should still benefit greatly from the higher static pressure.

I would be interested to see side-by-side comparison.

Also I had to watch a few times, but there was a heat pipe in that first cover shield, and did you see the vias at the back of the APU.

Ps5 APU is cooled both sides in effect, its hard to catch, and matches the patent. There is a small cooling of the die on the back as well as the front.

Huge.

Called it.

I've seen the tear down multiple times now, it looks great and masterfully engineered. One thing I didn't get was this small little knob thingie that the engineer puts back on the rear of the console. He takes something off the base stand and inserts it in the black rear part of the console.
