Why Sony silence is a good sign.

This flowchart implies a method for interrupting a texture call and check if there is a remastered version of it in a database. This can't be runtime at least since that would be waaaaaay to slow waiting for that download.
Remember this has to be happening while the GPU are expecting the legacy texture from memory.
806 Doesn't mention download either, so this is all probably server-side, i.e. for game streaming.

This is why the Travis Scott thread is full of humor. Everyone is downplaying a deep dive, yet defend a crotch shot of the controller.... That we already seen from more angles prior.

Travis Scott prototyping dat PS5ex.

Didn't know he did it with pictures of Jim Ryan tho. Welp, who am I to question one's sexual tastes....

Yeah this is def server-related. "Database" gives it away tbh tho that could've been referring to the local game file database too.

The database is used as a lookup table, since it houses all the hashes for all remastered textures and where to find them probably.

Database could mean a "remaster texture package" that you download along side the base game. I believe it makes more sense. Super Mario 3d Collection is doing something alongside the same concept.

But the whole flowchart seems to be at runtime. An updated texture package could just replace the original textures during install.

It says on the fly. To put it in simple, its easier to have a lookup table with the reference and the data on a separate package, than inserting the new textures inside the game code. It could make things break due to memory addresses and allocation. (that's my limited knowledge, I'm no game dev). That way it won't break anything and PS5 I/O is fast enough to do the job.

Also it will make the implementation painless. Less testing, less work hours. Let's not forget that the textures could be upscaled with A.I.. Barely any manual work needs to be done.

Its already been widely reported that Sony have done something novel with the social features of the PS5. That "create" button isn't there for show, and that they really haven't explained it in any detail to this point, suggests that they are treating this aspect as a major ace-in-the-hole, to be played when the time is right.

The funny thing for me is all the stuff MS have shown off was all detailed in Cerny's initial layout to Wired early last year. Sure MS have done their usual thing and branded it all, but the fact is that Sony were promising all this first and their system by all accounts is much more deeply architected around its performant i/o stack.

Its inevitable that they have at least one big info blow-out to come pre-launch just to show off the social features, the segmented downloads, any upgrades to PSVR titles, the general OS function and so forth.

That they are being so measured indicates to me that they are feeling very confident in their offering. The main potential banana-skin of price-point has been evaded, pre-orders appear to be higher than they can handle, and MS still look very vulnerable on the software front in the short-term.

I'm frankly amazed how bullish the Xbox fanbase is considering how utterly dismal their launch line-up is, especially considering how thin on the ground its been for so long already at this point.

Absolute memory addressing were left behind in the '80, today everything is dynamic and can be put almost anywhere without problems. But this has nothing to to with that.

After thinking about it some more it's probably that fig. 800 is when the game are trying to load the textures into memory instead. That would actually work. Locally that is.

Looking at how Era reacted to info about Yakuza where they immediately jumped the gun regarding exclusivity even if Sony does nothing - its fanboys will find a reason and blame MS, creating various anti PR for that with fake images etc. Sony crowd control 101.

all of these points are legitimate bummers on hand and hard facts:
  • no Dualshock 4 support for PS5 games but some of these games also exist on PS4 where you can use the DS4
  • games which were thought to be PS5 exclusives suddenly also on PS4.
  • the only real first party launch exclusives are Demon´s Souls and Destruction All Stars. one of those is a remake of a 10 year old game.
  • Spider-Man remastered only available in the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition
  • Uncharted Lost Legacy was 39,99€. Miles Morales is 59,99€ officially. this is 20€ more.
  • price hiking first party games to 79,99€ (in the case of MM, the hike is even greater)
  • months of silence only to announce a first party price hike in the moment pre orders go live so that people are distracted when the bad news drop
  • PS4 saves are in many cases not compatible to PS5 versions of this game, no "leave PS4 and play further where you left off on PS5"
  • charging 79,99€ for Destruction All Stars, an arena car combat game featuring MTX
without any information so far:
  • are really all headsets compatible with this 3D audio feature? advertisement of Spider-Man talks of "compatible headsets"
  • are save files for normal PS4 BC games at least compatible with PS5?
  • are really 99% of all PS4 games BC compatible and playable day one on the PS5?
  • is there a feature like quick resume?
  • how loud is the console when running some beefy game? what is the cooling solution, just a big fan again? can people expect some fan lottery again where some are louder than others?
i will say it again, if this console is a success it is not because of the new team in charge, it is because of amassed goodwill from the PS4 gen.

where is this any different than the start of the PS3 gen other than the pure console price which is substituted by the hiked game prices in the case of the PS5?

Sony is acting like "we are on top, we are selling anyways" while stumbling into the next gen and there seems to be no coherent future vision for the ecosystem or the "generations" approach.

how can someone talk of "there should be things only available on next gen" which were more or less Jim Ryans words and deliver a whooping 2 next gen only games? why are everything else sequels? Spider-Man spinoff, God of War 2, Horizon 2, Ratchet and Clank.

other than Destruction All Stars there is only one new first party IP, Returnal, which isn´t ready for launch.

call me pessimistic but i can´t shake the feeling that there were many bad decisions made behind the scenes and Sony forgot where gaming is heading in the future.

it all seems overly backwards and seems in many aspects like Nintendo of all things and so far it all smells exactly like the start of the 7th gen.

i for one, am concerned about the PS5 at this point and i have an extensive games library on my PS4 and do not have anything against Sony in general, i am there since the japan release of the PS1.

The dream is alive.. check two posts above yours;-)
For some reason I at first interperated it that fig. 800 came into play when the GPU were requesting the texture, but it has to be when the gamecode is requesting the file instead. My bad, sorry.

Sorry, I tuned out at the "games which were thought to be PS5 exclusives suddenly also on PS4" bit. Because (1) they can't convert 110m PS4 users into PS5 users overnight, and (2) its based on a retardedly absolutist reading of a quote that should never have been interepreted in that way because of point (1).

When these same types get all pissy over Phil's "no one left behind" being demonstrably a flat-out lie when certain titles are Series S/X only, I'll give a shit. Because having a PS4 version of a PS5 title is frankly to be expected in most cases for economic reasons, and a benefit to most PS users, Phil's broken promise is just another slap in the face to Xbox One users who've been starved of new product all year long already.

Spoiler Alert: Both companies are doing pretty shitty heading into launch

SONY:
  • Hardware: Communication has been late and lacking detail. We don't know many of the features available on the PS5 and don't feel aware of too much on the PS5. Feels like an upgraded PS4 Pro launch.
  • Software: Has shown some nice looking games for next gen. Kudos!! However, all these games are sequels, DLC, timed exclusives, or also available on PS4. Also unsure of a confirmed list of launch titles and perfomance. 4k? 60fps?
MICROSOFT
  • Hardware: have done a pretty good job showing off the console, communicating performance and delivering a steady stream of hardware info. Kudos.
  • Software: Jeers. Have only shown a few back compat games (Gears 5 at 120fps). The Halo fiasco. Has some nice launch and launch window games....but none are 1st party AAA "bangers". Unsure of confimed launch titles.

I have to say Xbox fans are absolutely obsessed with last gen compatibility features

I understand why

People are pissed about Spidey and Horizon 2 being cross gen because Sony has been promoting this generations thing all year, showcased the games as PS5 and only told gamers it's coming to PS4 literally a few weeks ago.

Yes, it’s almost like there’s been a massive global pandemic that has caused companies to reassess and rethink their plans as the crisis had unfolded. This has led to a less cohesive marketing and communications strategy from both Sony and Xbox, and people on this forum need to stop using their respective failings as ammunition in their non-stop childish console warring.

Whaddya think?

Horizon came out in Feb 2017. What do you think Guerilla has been doing for the last 3 years? Its far more likely than not based on the timing that the game would have been started on PS4.

Also, how is this a complaint in the first place when noone outside of Guerilla knows what the differences are between the two builds? The whole notion of cross-gen meaning inferior by default is just dumb anyway.

When stuff goes sideways its generally because development has been rushed or truncated, which is why launch titles rarely remain best-in-class for long. They are made to an immovable deadline external to the actual development effort on the software.

Being told that you need to plan to deliver on two different generations of hardware is not problematic in itself, provided you have time its not an issue. I get the feeling Guerilla haven't been rushed on this, they certainly haven't been boxed into the launch window.

They were also pissed when they thought everything was going to be next gen. It was anti consumer BS, remember? People will be pissed anyway.

What should they say?
Saves won't carry over from ps4 to ps5?.
I believe your post won't age well.

People freaked when they said "next gen titles". Sony also said that they will try to make the transition from PS4 to PS5 as smoothly as possible for consumers. I believe the crossgen games are a part of that. It's not that people are being robbed of exclusives or that it didn't happened in the past (GoW2 anyone?).

Games got more expensive all around, yet people are acting like it's a Sony thing.

Same way you can't use a PS3 to play a PS4 game. It is a different hardware and devs will make use of it in games. You can still use a PS4 controller to play PS4 games in it.

On saves I believe we should wait and see. They did crossplay/cross save years ago. Why are people straight up saying it won't support it if it wasn't confirmed?

They have set a pace from the start and they are sticking to the "show when it's ready".
They showed enough to have the pre-orders rolling, As I said previously, to the average gamer: launch games, console and price are enough.

All that said, Google Stadia jumped the gun and got steamrolled. MS with it's "steady stream of information" is causing confusion prior to launch. 500 games available? 1000 games available? Wasn't it "all games available" versus PS5 99% of a 4000 games? What happened?

See? It causes more harm then good. I believe they have some nice things to show, otherwise no need for NDAs, right?
