Deep Fear; Sega’s attempt at survival horror. What are your fav non Capcom survival horror games?

Condemned: Criminal Origins on X360. Game was fun for its time and had several scenes that were actually scary.
Always thought of it more as action horror than survival horror, but yeah I loved the shit out of this game. The sequel was terrible, alas.

I think Condemned: Criminal Origins and Dead Space 1 & 2 are up there with the best survival horror games ever made.

Condemned: Criminal Origins in particular is an incredible game - I'd love to see them remake this game in VR. It'd be such an incredible VR experience.

Condemned was amazing, better than fear for me. Loved the grimy, gritty atmosphere and the combat felt brutal. They nailed the Seven feel. I was well pissed they never released the sequel on PC back in the day, not quite as good as the first but still enjoyed it

Anyone know what happened with the talk of a third game ?

Revive it as a VR game. It was intense enough as is...imagine that game in VR? I THINK I'd want to play that but maybe not? lol

Yeah that's my dream.
It'd be incredible in VR but would probably cause a few heart attacks lol
I think it's worth the risk though.

I need to revisit this one as I haven't played it on a long time, the voice acting is hilarious, especially DuBoiss (you can't get any more stereotype as him, wearing pink with a dodgy accent)

Not bad for a last hoorah for Saturn, I remember buying it in London back in 1998. I actually sold my copy a few weeks back for £225 to help fun a 3080. Got all my games on a SSD now and have no room for a retro collection.

the game has gotten absurdly expensive compared to the Japanese version. That’s surprising to me since so much of the Japanese game is actually in English. One of the easier games I’ve played as far as story heavy imports are concerned

It's crazy that no one has mentioned the Siren series!!! The Sony fanboy bans must've emptied the forum cuz the Siren games were developed and published in house by Sony. Those were super solid Survival Horror games, specially Blood Curse for the PS3. Sony should bring back the franchise.

I love concept behind Siren but I thought the first and third games werent particularly well-made. I'm told the second is actually good but I havent been able to play the pal copy I bought. I'll probably have to break down and get a Japanese copy.

I would say Enternal Darkness for the Gamecube. It the 3rd best horror game after Resident Evil and Silent Hill. I would also give a nod to Deep Fear for it's off the wall campiness and how i love the Sega Saturn,

Do old PC FMV games count? If so, Phantasmagoria. I would watch my mom play that game and there are scenes burnt into my memory. Like where the guy hooks a victim's mouth up to the receiving end of a meat grinder and grinds meat into her mouth til she chokes. My Mom would be like "whoops you shouldn't have seen that" haha.

Also my hormones were just kicking in and the girl you play as is pretty hot.

I like The Thing from 2002. Sadly we did not get a sequel.

I've got such fond memories of Blue Stinger and the Dreamcast launch, but I bet it wasn't a very good game.
Blue Stinger does some interesting things and oddly feels like you could draw a line from it to RE4 moreso than most horror games of the time.

hahaha my parents bought me the sequel, “A Puzzle of Flesh”...not knowing what it was. I think I was 12? Needless to say my mom saw me playing it and was quite surprised. Weirdly they never took it away though

People already took the best alternative games so maybe this one? it's not an horror but combat and camera were like RE and the train location was cool.

and just like that I discover a game I’ve never heard of. Brand new to me. Looks legit too. Adding it to my list :)

Hands down, the Forbidden Siren series. So, so good. It's the closest thing we have to a Junji Ito game (aside from World of Horror).

Silent Hill 2 is the best survival horror game of all time. Hell best horror game in general. Fatal Frame series on average is better then Silent Hill IMO even if Silent Hill 2/3 are masterpieces.

Dead Space isn't survival horror but it's also up there as one of the best horror games.

Condemned scared the shit out of me at the time. Didn't like the sequel that much, though.

The use of cynlindrical 360° environment rather than classic static background is a clever idea, looks like real 3D environment.

Clever but looks like shit compared to pre-rendered RE locations, textures are smeared as fuck.

Yes because of zoom, you see pixels. Also, in order to be more homogenous, backgrounds are made very similar to a real 3D engine instead of using unreachable prerendered backgrounds.

Well i don't like this technique, you really don't have more interaction with the scenery (so untouchable like re backgrounds) and it only looks worse.
The only good thing is that characters are similar in quality so it all looks more homogeneous.

I had that game stolen by some "friends" I invited home once, found it in a pawn shop not far from my house days later.

Another one is a Colonial Marine campaign in Alien vs Predator on Atari Jaguar. This is not a Doom clone like many people that have not played it think. It is closer to Resident Evil than FPP shooter.

This is a guilty pleasure. Its also called Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn in some territories I think. One of the later PS1 games. It got average scores but I think it had pretty good graphics and a nice theme.

Deep space stands out as the best survival horror outside Capcoms doors, wonder will we ever see anything like it again

I could agree with that. You are weak AF as the marine and crawling around the duct work worried an Alien will come rushing at you...yeah that was nerve wracking for sure!

All the people who listed condemned 1 are damn right, it was the only game in my life who made me scare-turn off the console immediately.

More accumulated tension than fear actually.

I didn't actually enjoy any capcom horror game I've played so far. I prefer horror games that are pretty easy (no combat focus but also no run-and-hide gameplay) but have a great story and are very frightening.

My favorites are Silent Hill 2, Fatal Frame 1-3, Parasite Eve 1+2 and Fragile Dreams.

Edit: Oh and of course Amnesia 1+2 and SOMA.

What's the closest thing to a Chris Morris's "jam" type of horror game?

No monsters, but instead very fucked-up situations to a point it leaves you uneasy about what you are dealing with.

I guess Gallerians counts?

Deep Fear is a really solid game. Voice acting is worse than the OG RE but the gameplay in Deep Fear is solid, great graphics too. I have the Japanese import and a burned EU copy. Haven't finished the game but need to.

As for favorite non-Capcom survival horror games. The first that comes to mind is ZombiU, that game is frigging amazing. It's such bullshit that the game was largely trashed by reviewers. ZombiU came out like a month after RE6, that was the videogame landscape back then and reviewers trashed it because the melee felt "too repetitive." The developers made it more than clear that they were aiming for old school survival horror and they acheived it in spades as far as i'm concerned. Definitely not a AAA title but who cares, the games lacks a bit of polish but it's still an amazing gameplay experience.

The Padre on the PS4 is a super charming RE/AITD throwback. It plays more like AITD and is totally worth checking out if you're older and have patience for old games like that.

Currently playing through Fatal Frame 5 and I must say that I am really enjoying it. The mysteriousness of the story, combat mechanics, and sound design make this game worth playing. It's like if the PS2 era was in HD. Game feels old but it does enough things right to make it worth playing.

Fragile Dreams is awesome, I really wish I wouldn't have sold my copy because it's kind of expensive now. Definitely one of the best Wii games.

Fun fact: Deep Fear was never released in the US. It has a completed US version that was leaked out but it never hit retail in the US.

The Fatal Frame series is generally excellent and very underrated (although the Wii U game - Maiden of Black Water - was a bit of a disappointment). I personally prefer them to Silent Hill.

I recently played through a whole bunch of RE knock-off games:

-OverBlood (not actually an RE knock-off but just by sheer coincidence a very similar game, not doubt more inspired by Alone in the Dark)
-OverBlood 2 (turns out this is actually nothing like the first and is in fact a FF7 knock-off)
-Men In Black The Game
-Parasite Eve (not a RE knock-off really but I played it because the second one definitely is)
-Parasite Eve 2
-Hard Edge
-Deep Fear
-Dino Crisis
-Dino Crisis 2
-Galerians
-Soul Of The Samurai
-Koudelka (turn-based combat system but otherwise navigation is ripping off RE)
-Countdown: Vampires
-Covert Ops - Nuclear Dawn (Chase The Express)
-Fear Effect
-Fear Effect 2 Retro Helix
-Martian Gothic
-Evil Dead: Hail to the King

And yeah, the best was definitely Deep Fear. That and Chase the Express were the only 2 that didn't make me want to kill myself. It's amazing how many games tried to copy RE in the 90's but didn't understand anything that actually made RE enjoyable. Most of (nearly all in fact) of these games were utter torture to play through.
