Retailers start to confirm PS5 preorders based on stock allocation, not all will be able to be honoured

As many of us expected, not all preorder secure day one PS5 delivery after Sony begins to deliver launch date ashipment allocation info to retailers.

UK retailer ShopTo has begun emailing some PS5 pre-order customers to tell them they won’t receive the console on day one following a stock update from Sony.

UK retailer ShopTo has begun emailing some PlayStation 5 pre-order customers to tell them they won’t receive the console in time for launch.

The retailer ran a system which essentially let customers pre-pre-order a PS5 console by registering their interest prior to pre-orders going live.

Once PS5 pre-orders officially launched on September 17, customers were given a short window to confirm if they wanted to keep their pre-order.

And the retailer has now started informing customers whether it will be able to deliver their console in time for launch.

“We have received the allocation details from Sony and, unfortunately, we regret to inform you that we will not be able to fulfil your pre-order on day one/release date,” reads a ShopTo email sent to a VGC staff member on Monday.

If you ordered a console from ShopTo and have yet to receive an update via email, it might be worth checking the status of the pre-order section of your ShopTo account as these are also being updated.

ShopTo asks customers not expecting to receive their console in time for launch to keep their pre-order with the retailer in case other customers cancel their pre-orders or Sony makes additional launch day stock available.

“Also we would like to know if you would be happy to swap your pre-order for a digital console, if they become available and as you are in the queue, you will have the priority,” its email adds.

Multiple retailers sold out of PS5 pre-orders just hours after launch details were announced on September 16, despite Sony telling fans that pre-sales for the console would begin the following day.

PlayStation subsequently apologised for the troubled PS5 pre-order launch and promised to release more consoles to retailers imminently.

Selected retailers opened a second wave of PS5 pre-orders on September 25 which also sold out quickly.

Amazon has also warned some PS5 pre-order customers that they may not receive their console on the day of release.

"Some pre-order shipments out of total allocation may be delayed depending on the retailer."

Thread title reads a little mumbo jumbo suggesting a launch day delay across the board. We knew this already with Amazon on the NA pre-order thread. Some will get there day one, and some will not.

I remember the thread title for the Amazon one. Amazon said some customers "may not receive their units on launch day," and the thread title claimed Amazon was saying users "won't receive their units on launch day."

Anything for the clicks :messenger_fire:

Usually it's the websites that are after the clickbait but in this case the website quoted by the OP had it reasonably titled. It's the OP's title that's confusing, specially the "eminent delay" conclusion. And I like Bartski Bartski . Maybe he misunderstood what he read and not up to date on the pre-order news at the PS5 pre-order thread.

I wouldn’t sweat these after purchase emails. I’m sure Sony is making sure they have solid means of production. This is all a hype and marketing tactic. Artificially restrain the amount of preorders, and suddenly everyone wants one.

Remember last gen? You could walk into any store and purchase an Xbox One. No one wanted it as it was too widely available. Microsoft learned their lesson, and they did the same with X/S. All their stuff is sold out (in America at least for now)

I didn't mean to stir shit or clickbait if it did sound that way, just another news came up confirming what we've been all suspencing to be happening, hence the question mark at the end.

I have prordered both consoles at the biggest European tech retailer shortly after they went live and I really don't want to see an e-mail like this in my inbox but I'm ready for it

You may just get it delayed without getting an e-mail informing you it's getting delayed - it's the nature of the beast. It's about logistics mostly. Some will make it in time, some won't. There are lots of transit stops between the assembly factories and the consumer's mailbox/doorstep.

As long as I get mine before Xmas, I'm ok with it.
My retailer said delivery would be from release day up to 10 work days, depending on amount of units they receive in the 1st batch.

ShopTo had been taking “pre orders” in the form of a 1p deposit since January, anyone using them then had to confirm their pre order a couple of weeks ago when they went live, they have also been doing the same thing for Series X since last December.

This is a total non story, they clearly never waited for any stock allocation from either Sony or Microsoft, and have been allowing anyone to “pre order” with these 1p deposits for the best part of a year.

The store that the original article was reporting on took pre orders before Sony even announced the date or price, there is a reason most retailers wait until they have a price, release date and some idea of how much stock they are getting. Some of the delays for Amazon may also be them not being able to ship everything they have out in time from their warehouses.

This. Though technically you could preregister as far back as November last year. It also says in the preorder section of the account that you’re not guaranteed release day until they get word of their allocation. Don’t see what the issue is here.
When preorders started you had a week to confirm your preorder and units were allocated in order of peoples pre registration when their allocation was known.

ShopTo confirmed I wouldn't be getting my console on day 1 yesterday (I pre-registered back in July, apparently mid-June was the cut off and basically everyone that registered after that won't be getting a console day 1). Kinda annoying because I doubt I'll be able to find and preorder a console for day 1 now (probably too late), but it is what it is. I'll hold onto my preorder and hope I'm not waiting too long for my console to come through.

I'm sure this whole issue is only with the disc based consoles. One of my friends preordered a digital edition the day preorders went live (and was even late to get onto the website because of errors), but he's been confirmed a day 1 console.

Exactly. This was just Shopto going rogue and trying to get ahead of the curve. They opened up preorders in January, so the fact that some people that registered in June still made the cut-off is quite impressive. Most other retailers did not start taking preorders until Sony had allocated them initial stock. Since then Sony has been allocating more stock, hence the periodic release of new pre-orders.

I was skeptical of buying direct from Sony through that invite but now I'm more confident than ever seems like alot of retailers are gonna fuck alot of gamers.

The Shopto website clearly states it is "Subject To Allocation" on the pre-order page.

There are going to be so many angry people in November.

As the article says, you could pre-pre-order. Pretty much since it was revealed you could do that. Once price and date was set you could then confirm your pre-pre-order.

They obviously had too many people pre-pre-order and then confirm they still want it which is hardly surprising.

Sounds more like they were trying to be honest with you.

Why didn’t they get the allocation before they opened the preorders? I don’t get this.
Because then they can't take everyone's money.

A thread about the UK.

Who cares about them redcoats? I had would happily stop every console being shipped from them if it meant I could get my console.

I have nothing but hate in my heart right now for being unable to obtain a pre-order of either next gen console and I want the world to burn.

ShopTo’s pre-order system was superb. Worked like a charm and ensured the people who wanted one, got one. Scalpers couldn’t just go on two weeks ago and make loads of preorders like they could with game and smyths

Yep. I expressed my interest back in March, which is when they take the priority in the queue from. Was painless. Amazon I just went on for the DE and am hoping I get one. UK Amazon are quite good I believe though.
