Star Wars Squadrons on the horizon, will it deliver?

With the release just days away, who has pre-ordered this already? I decided to jump in without waiting for the reviews, as it is rare we get a space-sim, in the vein of Wing Commander on consoles, that too being based on the Star Wars franchise....

No it won't. It's EA.
EA wasn't the best publisher for years and they still had great titles under their wing. I mean, they do have some talents devs under their umbrella. I'm sure the game will be fine in that regard.

My issue is just that it's a niche. It could be good, but it all depends on how it's handled. Guess we'll find out very soon!

EA Games. It's not in the game.

edit: The short was nice though. I still can't let go of Star Wars and will see how good or bad it is.

Why is it half the price of a regular game? :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Nothing says quality like discounting your own game on launch day.
I'm going on the idea that they might be getting a cut back from Plus/Live subs because the multiplayer game part(IIRC) is 4 vs 4, and that's where the "squadrons" name comes in - and they are maybe eyeing esports with it, with low entry cost bringing high player count.

I don't buy EA games (at all) but have pre-ordered this. If like me you'd need a plus sub, and maybe PSVR and the Thrustmaster 4 that was mentioned in the verge demo review, it is hundreds of pounds on top of the good game price and if enough people get interested and good, then a yearly update at half price - if just multiplayer - or full price with story mode is likely to follow IMHO. So it is probably £30 per year :)

/hope it is good, it has been over two decades since my friend's mum blindly bought my friend a 2x CD-ROM unit for £400 that I had to install in their home PC, configure CD access for DOS (autoexec/config.sys) and extended memory for games - and I was just a school teenager having never seen a CD Dive before - all with the hope of us playing the original x-wing with streaming video/audio(and Day of the Tentacle, too, obviously)

The question on my mind is when is it set, the original trilogy or the sequel trilogy?
Can't really say I give a shit.
What I care about is if it will resemble genuinely great classics (X-Wing and Tie Fighter come to mind) with decent elements of "light simualtion" or if it will be an unremarkable dumb arcade like the Rogue Squadron series that was so popular among console gamers.

I think it looks good and as a PSVR owner I'm glad to see more support for the headset.

In all likelihood I will definitely pick it up soon but, as with anything Star Wars these days, I'm worried that it won't live up to its potential and am willing to wait a few weeks.

I think I'll wait to hear feedback from gamers and wait to see how well the online MP works. If the online MP is good then I could see me getting into it in a big way.

It's $40 on amazon which imo is a fair launch price and should be that everywhere. I'll get it cheaper down the line but hope its a success.

The price is suspicious but the experience I've had of it would definitely warrant buying it on a whim. It feels like the best balance of the old PC games while being accessible to console platforms. I really feel like the gameplay might be the sweet spot to please nearly everyone. It's also developed for VR which as already said, you would have to be insane to fuck that up with the ingredients in front of you.

It's priced so you would throw money at it on the off-chance but also at the price where something just doesn't feel right. Unfortunately I think it's just gonna be a series of tech demos with a short campaign, smallish online and ultimately leaves everyone wanting way more than what they're getting this time round. Game As a Service for the next gen I'm guessing. But I can't see the price being because it's shit though, so hey ho I guess.

Feeling some doubt, just hoping the single player campaign offers a decent time in the vein of those old Tie Fighter/X-Wing games. Max 10 player mp isn't the greatest.

Waiting for reviews. I wish we just got a Tie Fighter remake or a continuation of that game. This game doesn’t even really look Star Warsy to me.

Well according to the creative director, he says the campaign is between 8-15 hours, though the main focus is on the multiplayer side of things.. and why they have targeted $40, is that EA apparently want to make the game as accessible to everybody hence the somewhat affordable price of the game, and the fact that the breadth of the game isn't exactly on Mass Effect levels...

Based on the footage so far, definitely the former. There's a surprising amount of complexity, including the energy management stuff from the old LucasArts sims. I'm excited.

I'm blown away by this short movie - can't wait for the full release of the game.

I'm hoping so. It seems like they're giving offline/single-player fans the content they want. Still leery about what DLC or other whale-farming tricks they'll sneak in.

I'm picking it up. That gameplay trailer a few months back was enough for me to pull the trigger. If it was a full priced title I probably wouldn't have.

I loved the dogfighting in BF2 and I used to play X-Wing/Tie Fighter/XvTie back in the day so its pretty much a lock for me. What I'm a bit leery about is, if EA doesnt think its worth full price then I am expecting a pretty sparse offering. Also, saying that they are doing future DLC or at best they are taking a "wait and see" attitude about it makes me think that this game wont have very long legs in the community.

I'm optimistic. Haven't seen anything bad about it yet. Then again this comes from a gamer whose only games involving flying comes from Ace Combat games. So I want simple arcade controls, not complex stuff. I just want to zoom around and blow shit up for fun. I'll care about K/D ratios in Call of Duty.

Metacritic guess: 83

I feel skeptical about the game. I feel like I have this same experience(minus the detailed cockpit view) in Battlefront 2. If anything, Squadrons looks slower paced and less chaotic. BF2 just feels more grand and star wars to me. Squadrons looks a little barren.

That was epic.

Has any recent EA game, especially a Star Wars game ever given you anything near the galaxy changing choices you could make in Kotor?

No of course not. You are a spectator to EA and Disney, not someone who will actually be allowed to make decisions that could ever influence their story.

I couldn't care less at this point and I think I'd actually need to be paid to engage with this franchise ever again barring some absolutely massive course correction which will never happen under Disney

Battlefront has a PSVR Xwing mission that came out 2 years ago. It was my go to to show off VR. It blew minds, and it was a short 30 min demo. I probably showed 40-50 people that demo, from super VR skeptics to star wars fans and not a single person wasn't wowed.

It's literally a bland tutorial with some basic dogfighting, but my god is it one of those instances that VR elevates it to amazing. If Squardrons campaign is even average, it'll be incredible in VR.

You just cant get this reaction with normal gaming to a basic, otherwise boring demo. But its fucking magic in VR.

Above is why this is huge for VR, I literally had people talking about that demo for days after. "I never thought I would experience anything like that in gaming" were nomal comments to hear.
