"Speaking to Yahoo! Finance, Spencer confirmed that Microsoft is still planing on developing dedicated gaming hardware, at least in the short term, even though services like Xbox Cloud Gaming, Google Stadia, and Amazon Luna are changing the ways the world plays games.

"In terms of future hardware, absolutely I think we're going to see more console hardware down the road," Spencer stated, "Just like in video, just like in music, it's not that streaming has cut off device innovation. I think we'll continue to see that, and that's absolutely what we're planning for."

More consoles? For whom? Oh I know for youtube interviewers to miss out on spotting the console hidden in plain sight right behind him, only to be made a news out of that observation a few weeks later. That's what it's for!

for Japanese YouTubers.

No need for new names indeed. Moving forward:

Series X (model 2024)
Series S (model 2024)

later

Series X (model 2028)
Series S (model 2028)

...

Like MBP.

Nah, Steam machines type. The writing's been on the wall.

They're gonna go take the mobile and flagship approach.

It's an interesting concept.

Assuming not a typo for "Stream" that is a good idea. With GP and MS 1st party on PC why not make a reverence box for devs to target. (possibly with tiers)

I was coming to say I expect at least one to be a "MS Home" device that can stream Xcloud.

Suffers from extreme PDS
I just hope both MS and Sony are working to reduce the size of their console.
This generation on console is huge.
Considering the specs the Series X is nowhere near huge lol. Have you seen the new video cards? You’re not getting small consoles anymore with the ability to do RTX and 4k. That ship has sailed.

Still think there will only be one more gen after next, before one or both microsft and Sony go full streaming. I hope i'm wrong but next gen and one more gen after is like 14 or 15 years from now.

I'd be surprised any of the big 3 will be launching a console with an optical drive in Gen 10, if the trend of digital commodities stays on trajectory. Video games are the only physical media I can even think of anyone purchasing in 2020.

Stretching yourself across consoles and streaming is either a very savvy, clever business decision meant to keep your foot in both camps - or trying to fight a war on two fronts that you’re bound to lose against more focused competition.

Only time will tell.

I think at the very least a drive will be sold separate/day 1 sku will have the option (like ps5 vs ps5 DE) but I think gen 10 will 100 percent still ship with drives.

so in the next year or so, xboxY? might be a marketing problem...should skip right to Z imo

xbox could get expensive, like chronic iphone upgrades

on the plus side, xboxZ could have respectable load times

Yahoo Finance asked Xbox’s Phil Spencer whether this heavyweight investment in cloud gaming could see the forthcoming console generation become the last, and the exec replied that Xbox is “absolutely” planning for more console hardware.

“We’re about putting the player at the center. It’s not about the device in the middle anymore,” Spencer replied. “You see that in every other form of media: my TV is with me wherever I go, my music is with me wherever I go.

“I’m in control of the experience and I think gaming is going through that same transformation, which is why as you say, if you’re a Game Pass subscriber you can now play your great games on our Xbox console, on your PC or now on your Android phone via streaming.”

Spencer added: “In terms of future hardware, absolutely I think we’re going to see more console hardware down the road. Just like in video, just like in music it’s not that streaming has cut off device innovation. I think we’ll continue to see that and that’s absolutely what we’re planning for.”

That's been my belief all along. Phil wants Xbox to cover ALL facets of gaming. Just because he considers Amazon and Google bigger competitors than Sony doesn't mean he plans to get out of the console business, which would explain why Xbox spent millions and millions of dollars to develop 2 consoles this generation, the MOST powerful and the most budget friendly.

Still it's nice to have that confirmed.
