Phil Spencer says Xbox is ‘absolutely planning’ for more consoles in future

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

Yahoo Finance asked Xbox’s Phil Spencer whether this heavyweight investment in cloud gaming could see the forthcoming console generation become the last, and the exec replied that Xbox is “absolutely” planning for more console hardware.

“We’re about putting the player at the center. It’s not about the device in the middle anymore,” Spencer replied. “You see that in every other form of media: my TV is with me wherever I go, my music is with me wherever I go.

“I’m in control of the experience and I think gaming is going through that same transformation, which is why as you say, if you’re a Game Pass subscriber you can now play your great games on our Xbox console, on your PC or now on your Android phone via streaming.”

Spencer added: “In terms of future hardware, absolutely I think we’re going to see more console hardware down the road. Just like in video, just like in music it’s not that streaming has cut off device innovation. I think we’ll continue to see that and that’s absolutely what we’re planning for.”

Xbox Series XL (midgen refresh) and Xbox XXL (PS6 competitor) is a naming scheme I could get behind. Would be quite funny too.

I would be quite surprised if Phil had said anything else after making Xbox a behemoth of game studios.
What do the games have to do with Xbox? They don’t. Xbox is just yet another gateway. I’m sure Microsoft wants to keep that gateway open but it’s not the only one.

Yeah, people are nuts if they think that Xbox has now catapulted itself to one of the largest publishers in the industry just to stop making consoles. While the console is not the only focus now, it's still a core part of what they're doing, and it's a choice.
And the one only place where they take 100% cut from games sold, plus all the 30% they take from games sold on their store. I know Microsoft likes to act like console sales don't matter to them, but they obviously do since there's a massive amount of money to be made there.

What do the games have to do with playstation? What do games have to do with switch? Just because xbox is aiming at the streaming market early and trying to destroy competition before it really starts doesn't mean they are magically going to remove themselves from the hardware side of the console business. Having studios now that can help move hardware is just more reason to make said hardware.

Though I do concede that if the series x and s do at best the same as the one this last gen I will agree they probably should just give it up. But time will tell if that happens.

Pretty sad for anyone wishing MS to leave the games business seeing how they have made some fantastic contributions to the industry. Gamers want lots of options and anyone advocating for a shrinking market isn't much of a gamer.
If you ask most of them MS contributed nothing.

Forced HDD, forced Broadband, full gamer profiles instead of per game, Cross game parties and cross game chat, custom soundtracks, achievements, Day 1 digital downloads, Summer of Arcade and helping indies.

These are all things MS followed Sony into, and never contributed a single thing to gaming.

That comes from people with low self esteem.

You get those people ever year trying to FUD MS is bailing games so don’t buy it. Instead buy..... PlayStation!

The only fan base that gets extra jubilation the higher the user base gets. It could be the exact same game and ecosystem, but some will feel better if Sony says the units sold is 100M vs. 80M.

Need that reassurance they picked the product with the highest sales total.

still waiting for myself and any friends to battle it out which car we own (BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover or Alfa) is better because it sold more units. It’s gotta be either BMW or Mercedes but still haven’t heard any cheering and for the other guys to quit and buy one of those German brands.

The important is to have a market, yeah market leader is awsome, but doesn't mean that if you are not in the market leading you have to close all, staying in the market is important too

The thing is when we look at it, the market leader has 110+ million consoles sold, but in the market MS cares about (USA) they are just barely ahead, it’s only a couple mil instead of 50.

It’s a market they can easily see getting back, while making inroads in some Asian markets that weren't there before.

The rest of the world is a bigger market than USA. Imagine that, MS only cares about USA so we good. Ridiculous.

I already admitted that. If the US was the only market we’d be looking at around 45 mil vs 43.

Im not sure what you are trying to say or implying.

But the US isn't the only market. So what you're saying is completely irrelevant.

i fully expect a new Series something every 2/3 years from now on

I hope that this is the case; maybe every three years would be best. By doing that they would be bringing some of the advantages of PC gaming (i.e. greater frequency of upgrades and technological advancements) to the console market while still offering the advantages of console gaming such as its convenience and value for money.

Ehh, I don’t think the “console” is the focus at all. It seems to be GamePass and their consoles are simply a better way for you to play.

Then why mainly Americans are praising GP where you don't pay for games?
You don’t get rich by spending money.......

Just a thought.

The richest people I know look like dirt poor hobos. Driving old cars and nasty trucks, you know how they got rich? By living that way.

i don’t know if I understand you correctly. But subscriptions are not cheap and are often only held by people with stable jobs or careers. People are not paying full price for Sony games, they are waiting for them to discount (they always do and quickly) and then trading them on the used market. This is also why Sony boys hate digital media.

I dread to think what intentionally confusing name they'll burden the future consoles with, although it can't be as stupid as 'New' 3ds [the worst console name that's not the WiiU].

Maybe it’ll be the best box X since none of thier competitors can come close.

They'll probably keep X and S naming in their consoles, as well as the name Xbox. Maybe they don't even introduce a new naming scheme, and just replace the Series X and Series S.

10 dollars/euro isn't a lot of money in most developed countries. Moreover, we weren't talking about "Sony boys" (whatever that means, I'm probably close to your father's age anyway). Playstation attach rate is 10 this gen, highest ever, so you are completely wrong anyway.

Well, to be fair, the "new 3ds" tells me that it's brand new and is the newest addition (which will be stupid if ever changed), while I could be easily confused by xbox one, one s, one x, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series X.

As a soccer mom which would you know to buy? We all know that the store clerk probably would help her, but why make it so damn complicated.

There won’t be a One X or One S when she goes to buy,it really that simple.

You want the best box or the other box?

It’s really that easy.

Imagine how confusing it would be to her if the kids said I want a Playstation.

So they remove it entirely from the market? What about the items the stores has in their stocks. Does Microsoft buy them back?

But then yeah, it does make it kind of easier. And no need to be upset about it, since they will have full bc from now on anyways.

They discontinued them months ago, store stock is absolute minimal now. They sold through what they had planned into holidays in weeks thanks to COVID.

Bluray players and CD players are almost dead.

I do not complain about them, although I would miss a physical console with discs, and it is what is going to happen

The mid gen refresh will be the Xbox X Series X (a behemoth spec wise) and the Xbox Series X will be rebranded as the Xbox S Series X and the Xbox Series S will be called the Xbox S Series S.

They need to either fire the person who approves the names or swap them with the person who picks the codenames.

Weird they have to clarify this.

How will they be first party without xbox.
First some group of people thought they would just stop with gaming, because they think Xbox division is losing a lot of money. Then they switched their narrative to Xbox only wants to sell you Game Pass and xCloud and they don't care about hardware. So I understand why they are clarifying they are in it for the long haul, also when it comes to classic gaming systems.

People have been trying to convince themselves that 'this is the last hardware from Xbox' since the very first box was released.

I think MS will be in the hardware game as long as dedicated console hardware is a thing.
It's because they believe the bs from MS that they were not competing with Sony anymore and that they no longer cared how many boxes they sell, therefore there won't be another gen.
