Standard of ugliness?
Japanese people were celebrating right after MH Rise announcement because they're no longer needed to see ugly handler face and getting 2 beautiful women in return.

Yes, that's the reason Monster Hunter fans were celebrating when a new Monster Hunter game was announced.

Genius.

Man, this game seems even better than World to me and I put hundreds of hours into that. You can definitely see in some spots where they run into the limitations of the Switch hardware but still this game looks like it’s gonna be incredible.

I do wish Rise didn't come the monkey's paw of the Switch's graphical limitations, but from the game videos, I'm appreciating the ability easily see where the player-character is and what they're doing. The game's overall art direction looks nice, so that certainly helps.

limitations of the Switch hardware
Switch's graphical limitations
Honestly, in my opinion it because of limitation Switch's power that this game end up having strong art direction, because if it was on other consoles Capcom would would do what they always do, they would try to make look more realistic with realistic faces. Now with Rise because of Switch's limitation they have try extra hard to rely on art direction to make the game look good instead of rely on high tech graphics.

I've never been able to get into MH but I know that if I'm able to, I will love it. I really hope there's a version of this game optimised for the next Switch. BOTW2 + this game would be a hell of a launch bundle.

Possibly, but the visuals of Switch software tend to be very case-by-case. I'd attribute Rise's art direction more to Capcom's experience creating Monster Hunter games on portable hardware: they've come to know what works with less horsepower and on smaller screens. If, or when, they make a new MHWorld-esque title, I won't be surprised to see the company tone down the game's visual noise, which isn't to say characters will look less funky.

Seems like it has a lot more World influence as far as gameplay goes, rather than old MH. I'm cool with that.

A look at the UI

I like the new UI, it looks nice and clean. The monster icon is really nice too.

I never understand why AAA title always push for realistic style. You can make any style you want in video game and yet they chose to use really realistic style.

Because with realistic graphics they can show off the "tech" but i personally always find them visually very boring.

Yup me too. I feel like you can show off the tech with different art style. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart looks really great. Even with Mario we can see definite tech improvement from 3D World to Odyssey.

Anyway, I just saw the gameplay for Dual Blades, haven't seen the Long Sword one. Here's summary from Arekkz:

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Welcome ! There are plenty of other great games too.
Well you were right. MHGU is ending up becoming my game of the generation. Holy fuck, Switch redeeeemed.

I like that the SP and MP mode is separate but I want to ask if they release event Hunt, will it be mostly for MP or is going to be for both SP and MP?

New interview

I have to say, I only just took a look at the English version of the launch trailer and felt it was very weird how they whitewashed all the Japanese cultural stuff in the original text completely despite the aesthetic being left intact.

The lavish text in the intros for the monsters in the Japanese version of the trailer being replaced with a low effort generic English font is pretty sad too. But Capcom is where the "eat your hamburgers" meme comes from, I guess.

This is the Monster Hunter I'm getting my GF into! Like, she's actually interested!! This is gonna be epic.

yeah I really like MHGU a lot, but everything looks much more fluid in this.
The gameplay and graphical enhancements are nice. I’m really curious to see how it runs on the Switch.

I’m really looking forward to the general experience. There’s something to be said about playing a game during its zeitgeist. Playing a new game with everyone else is what I’m looking forward to most.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!

Game looks sexcellent omg, I've not been this hype since 3 (though I doubt it'll top that for my preferences) and I don't even have a Switch. Player is hilariously mediocre, missing half the hits and getting hit a lot. Just about dodges into the fire when the announcer boasts he skillfully dodges a fire move, lol.

Also it all seems like features World 2 could adopt itself rather than fork off to different direction. They're similar enough with the grappling hook crap and other World features but with even more possibilities. If the main series had kept on with the Tri style since then this would look so different and weird..!

Is this the beginning of the weapon video series? Can't wait for the Hunting Horn. I really like HH in MHW because you can see the song list on the UI (always forgot the songs). When I played MHGU, can't use the HH because of no song list on the UI... Hope they bring back it for MHR

This customization would've been a good pair-up with the Palico Prowler mode (from Generations). The main attraction is the human hunter, of course, but I spent a ton of time as the Prowler, too. There are several broken (in a good way) classes so it would've been fun to play as the animals again, maybe even allow 4p rooms where players pick between a prowler or a hunter.

This kinda just looks like they updated some character models to put on top of some 3DS game they never finished making.

It could be pretty sweet, don't get me wrong, but it just does not look like a native Switch game at all. I expected more from it visually.

I think if you compared the Rise footage we've seen to Generations Ultimate (which is literally "some 3DS game") you'd see some big leaps forward.

- the lighting and the character models/textures in Rise look better
- the animations seem to follow MHW style physics.
- textures and detail on Rise's monsters looks more like "MHW downgraded" than 3DS upgraded
- the maps appear larger and more open, with more foliage than the 3DS line of MH games

Dunno. I'm not trying to claim Rise is a looker, but to me the graphics (textures, lighting, animations, models, etc) seem more like trimmed-down MHW than a souped-up 3DS Monster Hunter port.
