Seagate - 1TB Game Drive for Xbox Series X and Series S Is $220 / 270€

Would not be worth it for me. I rarely find myself playing multiple big name titles which would require more space, so the inconvenience of having to redownload/reinstall games when I want to go back to them would be uncommon enough that I’m not gonna waste $220 over it.

I got a bit SD card for my Switch for like $20 bucks, that’s a scenario where I don’t want to bring game cards with me when traveling, but an expandable NVME anywhere near those prices can wait until they get cheaper

I guess when they come to Gamestop, you could use the quadpay feature and pay over time if it's too expensive for people.

This just in Microsoft renaming their console to Xbox Vita S and Xbox Vita X....

In all seriousness, looks like most will wait a few years in hopes of price reduction. Are there any shelf SSDs that would work in a PS5 that's cheaper though?

Don't be ridiculous.
This is a 1TB proprietary drive
2.4gb/s SSD for $220.

You can get a 1TB PC nvme drive
7.0gb/s SSD for $229

This xbox proprietary drive price is shit as everyone who was sane expected.

Yeah and price for the PC nvme will go down later on. With this? I would really reconsider the X why? Because sure the S is $300 with 512gb SSD for $200 more you get double SSD and a much powerful GPU, more ram and faster. Sure you get the S and get this SSD you would have 1.5gb of SSD but for $520? No way in hell... i prefer the X...

There is no Drive currently confirmed to be compatible with PS5. Based on the speeds they say they ask for, PS5 SSDs will likely be in the same ballpark or a bit higher in terms of GB/Dollar

Well

239,99€

I'm not going to buy that, at that price. Something like 80-120€ seems more reasonable for that. This is just a small nand-chip card without cache & controller chip. Way to expensive.

I really don't want to be the guy working at Sony when thousands of idiots call for a warranty replacement because they ESD fried their PS5s when attaching a SSD to the system board.

Yeah I’m very curious to see how the PS5 handles this. The PS4 could work easily with a caddy, but an NVME drive needs to be screwed in to the motherboard. They could be using a PCIE riser, but that would be reaaaaly easy for the end user to mess up

People has been upgrading his hard drive on PS4 for years. Probably they will provide a user friendly system

The linked drive is a pcie3. Look at a PCIE4 drive and compare price. I just bought a Sabrent 2tb for my PC and it was over $400.

Sabrent isn't even a trustworthy name in SSDs.

SSDs are sketchy too, you've got to get a good name or you risk your data, it's a wild west. I'd only spend money on a Samsung, WD, Seagate or other big brand name SSD with a legacy of being reliable.

It's going to be expensive to buy a reliable SSD at the specs PS5 requires.

The 980 PRO SSD will come in several sizes, starting at 250GB and going all the way up to 2TB. Pricing starts at $89.99 for 250GB of storage and goes up to $229.99 for the 1TB model. The 2TB version will be available later this year.

So the initial price of the MS 1TB SSD is pretty inline with other products of similar spec, you have to remember that this is proprietary on top of that which also adds to the "tax" of a factory having to bend over backwards for a custom product.

The edge that Sony has is that you CAN buy a jank brand if you want and no doubt the Samsung drives will go on sale all the time.

When considering a JANK SSD for your PS5 you need to REMEMBER that these things GET HOT, so a JANK brand might change the thermal profile of your machine drastically. Hell, even a NON-JANK one will change the thermal profile from stock to something different, Sony might have considered that.

Sony’s Mark Cerny said in March that it will support “certified” M.2 NVMe SSDs

PS5's can probably reject non-"certified" brands possibly preventing jank brands. Although, the PS5 CERTFIED drives might be more expensive, but necessary in a PS5.

XSS tard pack confirmed. XSS+1tb external=$520 vs XSX=$500. You end up with a few hundred gig more storage on the XSS, but gimped spec in every other way. Slower CPU, slower GPU, slower & less memory,no disk...

Its fine for a second console. Especially if the kids spend most of their time on a handful of games. Your COD, FIFA, 2K, Madden, Fortnite players don't care.

There are some outright horrible takes in this thread.

  • PC GAF - no, PC gaming didn't immediately become cheaper because of this expensive drive. Let's not pretend like most of you don't switch games between HDD and SSD as necessary. You can do the same on the XBOX.

  • SONY GAF - Ye who don't even have an expansion drive available yet - feel free to relax. Your hypothetical cheaper in comparison drive is vaporware at this point. Take stabs once you have your situation figured out.

Anyone know (ballpark) how long it takes to transfer a 50gb game from HDD to SSD? Just trying to gauge if someone is hot swapping files back and forth this is the amount of time you'll have to wait.

the real hidden cost of Game Pass now setting in

Gamepass doesn't FORCE YOU do download all the games on the service like a hoarder. Some people are going to have to change their mindset from a squirrel with it's cheeks full, to having only the games on hand they ACTUALLY want to play.

This is still an assumed feature from both MS and Sony, currently nobody has officially stated recently if this will actually work.

I rarely play more than 2 or 3 larger games at a time. Will probably use 500gb for larger games I’m playing, and the rest for indies or BC games then just swap the larger games in and out when required to another hard drive.

MS confirmed the use of an external Drive as mass storage When they first dropped the specs and hands on the DF in march

With so few launch games, I don't see a point jumping on this right away. Come April I'm sure I'll need one but if I can play BC titles on a regular external drive I'll be fine for a while.

I might bite if I see one listed at 179.99.

Ya.

Series S 512gb $300 + 1 tb SSD $220 = $520

Series X 1 tb $500

I'll take X with 512 gb less SSD and even save $20 to boot.

Horrible comparison because that's a 8-channel SSD with DRAM. A 4-channel PCIe 3.0 DRAM-less SSD is the best comparison in terms of both performance and cost. The only thing that will differ is the SSD controller will be PCIe 4.0, but it won't actually be any faster than the 3.0 drive.

The price for the type of storage it is isn't necessarily bad. BUT for a console that typically is geared towards people who are more financially conscious it will probably be a bit of a sticker shock.

These "consoles" are now more than ever essentially a prebuilt PC at this point and no longer the simple $400 purchase that would last for 10 years.

Curious what NAND they're using because of course mark-up is involved to drive profit off the peripheral sales. It's not a perfect guide, but 256 Gb of 3D TLC NAND goes for a session average of $2.943 according to DRAM Exchange. Which is about $0.09 per GB.

Of course, that's just an average, and different manufacturers probably have different pricings. Plus I dunno if the listings on DRAM Exchange are for production costs or the selling cost to drive manufacturers (if the latter then the actual production costs would be a bit cheaper).

And we know these expandable drives are being sold at a profit, I guess a 2.4x profit margin on the sale vs. production costs is fair (it's probably a bit less than that actually because pcb and misc. components wouldn't be covered by the NAND component prices).

Still, $220 is kinda rough. Guess it's worth it for guaranteed performance, though (and more storage of course). That 7 GB/s Samsung drive (which should be PS5 compatible) is like $230 though for 1 TB, that kinda makes the expansion cards look overpriced by comparison. And it's Samsung, so I expect solid performance consistently.

In light of that I might prefer how Sony's handling storage expandability out of the two because I didn't think PS5-compatible drives would be that "cheap" this soon. Still though I can see the portability and ease-of-use arguments in favor of MS's approach, I just hope the prices come down in the near future.

We knew the price was 220$ for US but we just confirmation from MS about Europe for the 1 TB SSD

XSS is €299 for reference in Europe
