Sony confirms no free PS5 Upgrade for PS4 Spider-Man Owners

Kotaku reached out to Sony about this. Games journalism actually doing some work. GoW next please.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered
is an enhanced version of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and is included as part of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for the PlayStation 5. In addition, players who purchase Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PlayStation 4 can upgrade at no additional cost to the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and can take advantage of a paid-upgrade to download Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered.

There are no plans currently to offer Marvel’s-Spider-Man: Remastered as a standalone. Players with a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 can purchase Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition to experience Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered on PS5. Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 also will be backwards compatible on PS5.

I feel like this is all on marketing. It seems like this isnt a straight 4k 60 fps port of spiderman. They are overhauling graphics with new character models, better hair, new texutres for buildings, ray tracing, and a bunch of other stuff that will also be in Miles. I am perfectly fine with this being a $20 new SKU.

However, there are a lot of issues with how Sony has gone about marketing this:

1) We havent seen any footage, no one really knows what this remaster looks like.
2) There is no separate SKU. You have to buy the $70 spiderman MM version to be able to play this.
3) We dont know what upgrades current gen versions are getting on PS5. Is the PS5 boost mode going to enable 4k 60 fps via BC?
4) We also dont know if Insomniac intends to release a PS5 patch for the existing PS4 version of the game in case PS5 boost mode isnt anything special.

There are so many dumb moves here by Sony its mind boggling to think that their most popular exclusive of current gen is being treated this way. Had Sony announced PS5 patches for TLOU2, Ghosts and other pS4 exclusives, this wouldnt be as big of a deal.

I think it makes business sense. The game probably has sold 20 million on ps4. And will likely sell another 10 or more on ps5 in that ultimate pack with miles. Selling 30 million plus copies of a game is big, and will likely be the case. Either that or sell it for $1 on gamepass.

Yes. But there is no separate SKU. so it wont sell that 10 million.

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
I like free stuff.

But if it's good enough I'll pay for it; in this case I think I do have a physical copy of Spiderman somewhere but honestly want it digital so don't mind paying for that Ultimate edition as it looks like some quality shit.

The really weird thing is them not selling it separately; but I think it's them trying to hide charging for this thing or something.

There is absolutely no legit way of defending that. Fuck Sony, for the first time in my life and being a non-animal decently intelligent person, there's no debate that Microsoft is the better offer.

It'll hurt for sure after 4 generations of having Playstation and despising Xbox, but Sony have become greedy degenerate losers.

Most likely, if that 1% of games are those who receive remaster, that would be unprecidented dick move.

This was all mentioned in the original playstation blog post

From what we can all piece together:

Spider Man (PS4): Will be backwards compatible on PS5. No indication of what this means for upgrades, if any. Resolution, frame rate? That would be all to expect.
Miles Morales (PS4): Will be able to be upgraded to PS5 version. No specification on what this means or if it'll cost more money.
Miles Morales (PS5): PS5 version.
Miles Morales Ultimate Edition (PS5): The only way to get Spider Man with raytracing, added NPCs, improved textures. No other pathway to upgrade.

I really do appreciate the devs and pubs providing free updates. I wish more companies would do that. Consumer friendly to the largest degree.

It's always fun that people are saying: it does/does not make business sense. Who the fuck cares.
There are layers to everything. It's not always black and white.

If you look at 99% of the cross gen games releasing this fall, the only upgrade you are getting is 60 fps but everything else is the same. Same textures, same character models, same lighting. You might get ray tracing in some games, but it is is basically the same graphics.

What they are doing here is more like the Shadow of the Colossus remaster. An entire graphics overhaul running on top of the old engine. So yes, expect to pay for these games because they arent cheap port jobs.

So in that sense, business does make sense. I'd rather have a full remaster of TLOU2 and GoT that redoes foliage, character models and lighting (hopefully pre downgrade) than the same exact ps4 game but now at native 4k 60 fps. Sony will always invest in a full remaster if they can recoup their costs.

I didn't buy the DLC the first time, and it's only $20 more than MM to begin with. I fail to see why this is a huge deal.

Not surprising. TLoU remastered wasn't free and that had minimal upgrades applied.

They're adding quite a bit to Spider-Man Remastered so I'm not sure why this is shocking. No Sony first party games have had free upgrades have they?

It isn't at all, people just want to make it seem like it's the worst thing ever for some reason.

Yeah just keep throwing money at papa Sony and maybe they'll acknowledge you as the fanboys you are and maybe, JUST MAYBE, they'll give you a discount of 10 bucks on some of their 70 dollars game.

😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

An understandable stance, but it definitely looks silly when games like Gears of War 5 are getting free next-gen upgrades on Series S and X.

It's a valid business move and it's their prerogative to charge whatever they feel is worthwhile or bundle it with whatever they think they can get away with. But it only comes off making your competition look like a better alternative.

Obviously. However Sony never stated if you get boosted resolution or FPS, from those older titles. If they would say that, that would not be an issue, however I feel like they don't do that if they have Remaster in store. Will see.

Remakes is obviously totally different, that's obviously payed deal : )

But even then, if company want to drop some remake for free, fine, I am not going to speculate, if it makes business sense or not. I was probably reacting for something slightly different here, I think. It's about forum posters. That they are concerned for bil./tril. companies and not about what it's right for them.

I totally understand this, if it were a new game and had just come out yeah offer a free upgrade but it's a 2 year old game that got a ton of work, we got what we paid for 2 years ago and asking $20 for an upgraded version is totally fine, it's not like you can't play the version you already own through BC. It's also a licensed character so I'm sure that Marvel wants a cut as well.

I don't disagree but being realistic about it the game did not even come out during generational transition.

Same thing with Gears 5 and other Xbox One games.

"Players who already own Gears 5 will get the Series X version for free, via Microsoft’s new Smart Delivery system. "

"Gears 5 also saw speedier loads on the Series X, and included additional visual features like contact shadows and self-shadow lighting. According to Rayner, the team at The Coalition is investigating a version of the game that could run at 120 frames per second in multiplayer matches. Microsoft revealed that The Coalition only had a matter of weeks to make all of this progress. "

.

Sony is ignoring Xbox actions.... And is a bad thing I think.

It's free, with more substantial upgrades than Spider Man, and they're showing off comparison shots now.

100 fps, improved textures, PC ultra settings, volumetric fog and particle increase, faster load times.
