Should Sony reduce the price of the PS5?

We should at least be able to admit that none of those consoles have an impressive launch line up or we're not operating with the same set of facts.
The bottom line is what the Playstation has, Xbox since yesterday also has just as much or more, it's just a matter of whether you enjoy RPGs and shooters more or less than action adventure.
Xbox however can claim a lot of things that Playstation does not have and I refer you to my OP. It's legitimate to wonder if they should charge me the same. Casual gamers who wonder like me will start speaking with their wallet at some point. It's just economics.
Bethesda and its subsidiaries has not cracked a 90 on Metacritic since 2012. They are not on the same level, in fact they were still an industry joke two days ago

I honestly think they should increase it due to the SSD. Most average people will think "oh it has a bleeding edge SSD? For $499? I don't know, must be a cheap chinese clone at that price."

PS5 Digital Edition is already $100 cheaper than Series X, and $100 more than the much less powerful Series S.

Add that to Sony's first-party line-up and it's the best value console next gen.

Humm.. I would disagree that the PS5 pre-order numbers are anything to go by and I know very well how high they are, I'm still trying to pre-order myself.
First of all, Xbox sold out equally fast and we don't know how much stock manufacturers made available so the best we can do here is speculate.
Most importantly though, the mass market wasn't queueing at EB Games or launching the amazon app at 8 am this morning. Those were the most hardcore gamers, people like me (I did both of those things).
The mass market will start really paying attention about a year from now.
Yeah true, but with such a fair anlysis you cannot create Have you seen Titanfall reference : )

The gap is closing fast.

I think that comes down to the individual, for me I see nothing that compares in quality to God of War, TLOU, DeS coming from Microsoft or their new acquisition. If TES:VI is Xbox Exclusive it will grab my attention.

PS5 will release with games like Demon's Souls, Spiderman: Miles Morales, Devil May Cry V Special Edition, Sackboy, Godfall, Destruction All Stars, Cyberpunk 2077, AC Valhalla, CoD Cold War, Observer: System Redux, Dirt 5, Watch Dogs Legion or NBA2K21.

In addition to Astro's Playroom preinstalled and as PS+ games (most people will have PS+):
Battlefield 1
Batman: Arkham Knight
Bloodborne
Days Gone
Detroit: Become Human
Fallout 4
Final Fantasy 15
God of War
Infamous Second Son
The Last Guardian
The Last of Us
Monster Hunter: World
Mortal Kombat X
Persona 5
Ratchet and Clank
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Until Dawn

Not bad at all. Tell me a console with a bigger or better launch line up than this one. And for the first year it will have Ratchet, Horizon 2, God of War 2, Returnal, probably Gran Turismo 7 and all the timed exclusives plus other ones that who knows are going to be released like FFXVI and FFVII Remake Episode 2.

What is the Xbox console exclusive launch line-up? And what other new big console (also available in PC and Xbox Series S) AAA exclusives are going to have game Xbox and Game Pass for the first year other than Halo? From Bethesda Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo will be PS5 console timed exclusives, an in EA Play they put their big games a year after release or so, so they may put there Jedi Fallen Order.

What games are going to convince casuals to speak with their wallets?

Agreed. I think most Sony exclusives are boring AF.

Both PS5s are at a very fair price.
Move on.

Now get back to me on the SSD expansion in a few months😂😂

No, they don't need to.

I don't have a problem with the xbox series x and ps5 pricing. You buy this once and never have to worry about upgrades. I have to upgrade the pc every two years by stretching it

Why lower the price while the preorders are selling out and it seems like it will sell well this holiday? If the preorders weren’t moving, then that would be something else.

The price of the games or the console, because next gen is looking pricey AF on the PS5. You can no longer ignore the extreme value gap between Xbox and Playstation.
The old third party games are cheap. The first party xbox stuff has to actually interest someone

No, that would be a sign of weakness. They would be saying, "Ahh! Microsoft's big wallet has us scared people won't like us anymore! Here, we'll discount our console. Please stay with us."

Sony don't simp.

Well, what are we comparing here? It depends which ones you pick. Since yesterday it's at best a toss. Bethesda games metacritic particularly well. And Microsoft added all of them to its stable, so that argument has become outdated I'm afraid.
Sony still has all the zenimax games either via BC (I would assume they're part of the 99%) or coming out soon so only ones released from here on out not named deathloop and ghostwire toyko. They didn't suddenly destroy all copies of doom eternal on PlayStation. So they both have those in their stable until...starfield? Maybe another wolfenstein before that

When both consoles are out in the open in peoples hands and more people start to realize how inferior PS5 and the Playstation ecosystem is Sony will be the first ones to drop their price to try and stay competitive.

No reason to drop the price since it is going to be selling out for awhile. That's leaving a ton of money behind.

The amount of nonsense posted in this forum recently is hilarious. Even made me post again after years. Predicting the next thread title: "Is Starfield better than anything Sony's ever done and will ever do?"

Sony is still much stronger than MS in first party. Imo, MS went from being extremely weak in this department to being strong (that is, considering all the titles from Bethesda are confirmed as exclusives), but they still have a lot of work to do to catch up with Sony's studios and all the japanese devs backing PlayStation up.

Other than Elder Scrolls and maybe Fallout, the IPs are not worth much imo. Most are IPs that could go dormant anytime and no one would miss them (even Doom was dead for a long time). The most valuable asset they have are the capable studios, but will Microsoft fund big, relevant projects from them? We should wait and see. I know MS is committed to Game Pass and will lose a lot of money, but are we talking about a regular stream of US$ 100 million+ projects? All for Game Pass and exclusives?

That being said, the amount of good will demonstrated towards MS these days feels like the fans had been too disappointed and for too long. It's great that Xbox is alive again and will push the competition, but come on, let's be just a bit more realistic. PS5 is still a stronger brand, with much larger market share and will start next gen with a huge advantage (they're also ahead in terms of game line up for the launch window). If there's one company that needs to catch up with them it's MS, so PS5 cheaper than Xbox Series X, for short/mediu term, is bs.

The PS5 price is great, the problem is the cost of games. Unless you really love Sony’s exclusives it’s hard to not recommend Xbox gamepass instead. Especially for casual players and younger kids. It’s great to see my son and nephew play dozens of different games through GP with each other online instead of stuck to Fortnite or COD only.

Parents don’t have to buy games anymore!

Once people start realizing that Starfield is not releasing on Sony's console
oh u think all these studios are going exclusive? cute. Skyrim 2 is going to be whored out to every platform just like that last one.
Once enough people start commenting about trying the latest FIFA and Battlefield weeks before people on Playstation, without paying anything extra, word will spread.
what? were are you pulling this from?

it sounds like you already made up your mind and are getting an Xbox, based on the biased misinformation in your OP.

do what your gonna do man. i dont really care.

You’re completely missing the point. Xbox is changing the economics of gaming. Every single game you mentioned I have to pay for on PS5 (except for the ps+ collection which is “a small game pass of my last gen games”). And the “what does Xbox have” argument is obsolete. Read the news. Or my OP.
I understand why you’re only mentioning next year. From 2022, MS may have the ability to release 4-5 AAA exclusives a year. Again all included.
You don’t have to get it but I doubt that incrementing the number behind their last first party releases is gonna be enough for Sony this time. Not at 80€ a game and the same price as a AAA machine that’s more powerful. Time will tell

Microsoft is scrambling to not lower their price not Sony. With the DE PS5 only $100 higher than Series S, the value proposition and legitimacy of Microsoft’s approach is in question. (Long term after the preorder/ holidays sales craze)

The acquisition of Bethesda is huge and I hope Microsoft plays It to their advantage as much as possible by making all franchises exclusive.

But, that move truly hurts Sony more than helps Microsoft.
Sony is still king.

.. until another 20billion or so is spent by Microsoft.

Why lower it when people are clamoring to buy it?
That’s it. It’s like people think the new acquisitions absolutely need an immediate response from sony or something. How very shortsighted

Did million of people cancel their ps5 pre-orders after the Zenimax news broke out without me being aware? What would be the logic in reducing prices at this point in time?

No. But they're gonna have to do something in regards to their services and pricing of games if they want to retain gamers.

Especially now with the bethesda acquisition, people are eventually going to start seeing how much cheaper it is to have an Xbox

Oh god, games have taken Xbox 7 years already... despite having the best E3's year after year...
It's never too late to turn things around, and they have been doing everything right. Do you truly believe XBGS with 23 strong will not put out any great content in the next couple years?

Sony should do what makes sense for thier shareholders.

As for me...can we have a lower price if the PS4 now please...I can get a PS5 DE for the same price FFS

Flight Simulator was only a few weeks ago.
Not your type of game? I guess there goes the metacritic argument.
Bethesda is an outstanding acquisition.
Asobo is 2nd party, though I expect MS will pick them up

Bethesda is a good acquisition but they haven't made a 90 plus game in almost a decade

They were still the industry joke 2 days ago. Let's not disguise their issues now

You may be overstating their issues with one particular franchise but I think I see where you stand.

Some other points to consider:

- US$ 70 games: price is more dynamic today. A US$ 70 game becomes a US$ 50 game in six months and eventually becomes a free game. Game Pass is a fantastic deal for sure, but there's an infinite offering of cheap AAA games these days in every platform, so from the economic perspective, as much as MS is being aggressive and crazy with Game Pass, they're fighting in a market where the consumer is already overwhelmed by the amount of quality games for cheap.

The real competition these days is for people's time, so offering them 100 games per month is not necessarily better than offering a much larger menu of good deals and the possibility of dedicating your time to one or two better games.

- Considering two of Bethesda's games will be PS5 exclusives for the next year and there's nothing we know yet that's coming out soon from them, when are the fans expecting to start collecting the fruits of this 5.7 billion deal? Probably will take 2 or 3 years to start making a difference. I have the impression that MS is a bit too late, but we'll see. This gen should be very interesting.

Reading some of the responses in this thread makes me realize that some people just refuse to consider anything that might challenge what they've already convinced themselves to be true.

What time is it?
Unless Mark Cerny hand delivers my PS5 along with an envelope full of hundred dollar bills, Sony is doomed.

I looked at GamePass lineup lastnight out of curiosity and I think I saw less tha 5 games that I had any interest in playing that I didn't have already, wasn't super cheap to buy or had been on PS+.

I really feel people are overselling it.

I'll likely cancel my two PS5 Pre-orders just before launch.
I've pretty much decided to wait till next year because of the $70 price tag for games and will just stay a year behind on launches and scoop games up used or at a discount. I normally buy day-1 digital but if sony wants to play whos the bitch I'm willing to play.

Gamepass is not an option for me. I need to own it. If I rent netflix I do it 1 month a year.
