How's PS5 in a 1080p display?

Pro is great on 1080p with supersampling. so PS5 could be even better if have special modes for that. or at least same options as pro have

Doesn't the TV do its own upscaling or is it different if a PC is hooked up. I can't remember correctly but I think on my old AMD GPU I was able to choose if I want my display or GPU to upscale. Some TVs do it better than others of course. Sony TVs are usually praised for quality upscaling.
I really don't know but i have pretty darn good tv and full-hd gaming is pretty bad.
I had to buy a new gpu to play at least at 1440p just for that.

Watch the trailers on YouTube, does it look good there? It will look even better in person on your 1080p with no YouTube artifacting.

The graphics and pixel quality will be a lot higher, you don't need to run and get a 4K TV.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I don't know if you are serious with this comment but 4K offers nothing apart from HDR support in most cases. I have a Samsung ks8000 a good 4K TV but it's nonsense that the 4K aspect is even noticeable compared to a nice Full HD set.
See this is where I disagree, I do find a High fidelity 1080p picture still looks fantastic.
But I don't see HDR as this big thing people make it out to be.
A high quality 4k image is better then an average 4k image with HDR, obviously having both is fantastic.
Same applies for 1080p Vs 4k
A pixel perfect 1080p picture always looks better then a poor 4k one
Either way it depends on the source.

You can upgrade to a 4K TV later down the road like once HDMI 2.1 becomes standard on these sets. Thats what Im going to do

I've been wondering... To this very day, all my TVs are still 1080p, and I'm very happy with them, so I'm not planning an upgrade anytime soon. Anyone here have heard how the PS5 will behave with the "old" full HD format? Is it going to upscale things like the pro? The upscale is automatic or the user have some control over settings on that regard? Is there some info on the matter?

Edit: I'm an idiot. I mean downscale, or supersample.

It seems to supersample like PS4 Pro. If it downscales then that’ll be massive for 1080p tv’s/monitors as it should mean a massive performance boost if it can go from 30 to 60-120fps.

One, you're an idiot. You're happy with 1080p because you're ignorant of what 4K offers. Do yourself a favor and upgrade one of your TV's asap. 4K is cheap nowadays.

Two, it'll probably offer the same supersampling features of the PS4 pro.
What an asshole way to say nothing. I have a 1080p TV that features 2 component, 3 hdmi, 2 AV hookups, and S-Video. Why the fuck would someone like me want to throw away a fantastic TV for my retro gaming systems just for a 4K TV that, at best, has like 1 component and 3 HDMI ports? What am i supposed to do with all my old consoles? I don't really have the room for another TV.

Jesus, you can buy a 4K tv now with basic features for the price of a monthly cable and internet bill.

For Brazilians , 500 us shitty 4K may be around 2000 us.
Who would pay 2000 us for shitty 4K if with the same price u could get Oled 4K HDR in another country? Pretty disappointing, I also would keep 1080 with that price difference.

Saying that. 4K is awesome, huahuahha

Kind of surprised no one has tested PS5 on a 1080p display yet.
Brad from Giant Bomb is playing on a 1080p tv. He has yet to attempt to upgrade on both monitor and TV front. He mentioned it looking very nice, unsure of how much he has used some of the performance modes however.

Honestly I think one of the high end plasma sets could make games look pretty good on PS5/Series X.

They already looked basically perfect on Pro. First party games at 60fps on a 60hz top gamma plasma though..

Can’t wait.

With the power the PS5 is packing - he is absolutely an idiot if he sticks with 1080p this generation. The difference between that and 4K is literally night and day.
It’s not. It depends on screen size and viewing distance. A 1080p 32” each display at an arm an half viewing distance in a desk would be indistinguishable from a 4K one while playing a game or watching a movie.

Lol. My Panasonic plasma still has far superior motion to most tvs out now. I'd take the motion over 4k because boxing looks lile shit on lcd/led or whatever they're calling it now.

I’ve seen many good Chinese 4K TV’s here, and they are surprisingly good. I would pick any of them over 1080p.

You are in trouble friend, just like i am.
NO TV on the market no matter the price can match our panels in motion (so 99.9% of the time), and if like me you've been using plasmas for a long time there's just no way in hell you could adjust to how LCD/LED/OLED handle motion.
That’s why i have a KURO and a VT50. And when they'll both die, hopefully years from now, i'll just try to find another one. Actually, i better start looking.

When I first got my Xbox one x, I only had a 1080p tv but despite that the downscaling worked very damn good. A downscaled 1080p image looks quite a bit cleaner than native 1080p so quality-wise I would say you’re not missing out on a whole lot.

though if you really need one, you can buy a hisense or tcl for like...250-400 bucks (you can get a 58” hisense at Walmart for $279 for example)

Well for some its new console or new tv not both. And new console wont evem be available this year here i guess so.

I'm sure it will. The question is whether 1080p will be using supersampling or some other form of expensive AA, or will the PS5 downsample 4K to 1080p.
4K is not supported in the video output options. I don't think it's supersampling. It doesn't look like it, but it does look nice. Playing Demon's Souls on performance mode moves and feels nice. Looks pretty good. Playing on cinematic mode is nauseating. It looks nice if you're standing still but moves horrible. I'm not sure why that is, but it's definitely noticeable.

I've been messing around with oled, played a little of horizon on pc, so 60fps. You can use the motion settings to make panning pretty smooth so I was like this isn't bad.

Then I switched to my plasma and it was so smooth without any motion settings enabled.

Plasma really was the best.

And that is why I have two plasmas. One in the living room which is the VT30 and one in the bedroom which is a UT50. Panasonic really did create amazing televisions. My friends hate their televisions after watching sports on mine. They look so real and the motion is so good no ghosting and no "sweet" spots for viewing as the entire thing is a sweet spot.

You still get benefits from the new systems even without a 4K TV. I'm using an Xbox Series X on a 55" 1080p LG and the image quality is extremely good thanks to the 4K > HD downsampling.

Can someone help me out here. My buddy has a stellar LG 32" 1440p monitor and a superb 1080p tv. He's confused on which display to use for his PS5. How does this supersampling work and which out of the two displays would providebetter quality images?

It's going to be fine. I even played the PS4 on an older 720p TV and it's not like it wasn't a huge step up from the 7th gen still. The textures, lighting, greater world simulation and everything else are still there. The resolution itself is almost less important than all that.

As the PS4 Pro has Supersampling mode I imagine the PS5 does but we don't know yet. Just go for it and get a 4K TV when you can imo.

Until they add real 1440p support the 1080p TV wins.

The problem is if you get a cheap 4k HDR tv then it doesn't have the brightness to actually do HDR right. To be absolutely wowed by HDR you really need to go toward a higher end set. Nothing in the $400-500 range and below is going to have the wow factor.

You made the right choice OP. These forums gaf and retard era are populated by american and western europeans for the most part. Folks that have it really easy when it comes to buying electronics and other consumer goods.

They will never understand your pov. If you are happy with your 1080p tv keep it. 4k is overrated as fuck. I play downsampled games all the time and it's not worth it if you are at a living room distance.

amazing... except for the aliasing artifacts, that “disappear” with 4K. in any case, 4K has 4x pixel than 1080p...
well, 4K is also like a boat... lol... (“a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into”) that was me back in the day with GTAV 4K on PC, when it was released in 4K for PC... 4K monitor, sli gtx680, new processor, new pc... etc.... (now it is “cheap” to get 4K on PC at 30Hz... lol, never ends i want 60hz all eye candy. so will be getting a 6800xt... and a ps5 of course, before june2021, for ps5 GTAV)
but i digress...

BUT, remember the PS4 was 30HZ!. (I HOPE) all games for the ps5 will be 60Hz... 60 hz is the MUST have feature for the ps5.
so IMO more important to have the pS5 than a 4K tv... if you have to choose.

Lol. It all depends on how far away you sit from the screen. Many people sit too far away to even see the difference. You come off as ignorant.

Downsampling can almost produce bullshot quality like IQ. Bioshock Infinite 5120x2160 -> 2560x1080

I think if I changed in game AA (FXAA?) to SMAA it would clean all remaining edges. Still looks fucking amazing in motion.

Super sampling is great (I used a PS4 Pro for about a year with a 1080p TV, by far the best IQ experience I had to that point), but native 4K does that too honestly. I was playing some PC games this week on my 4K TV - Titanfall 2, Jedi FO, Spyro, full 4K and near max, and the IQ is just insane, and far beyond what we saw from console all gen. I don't have a DLSS GPU, so I can't speak to that, but I think a lot of people are going to like native 4K versus the 1620p or CBR or whatever they got this gen even if the difference is subtler than before.

I guess when people praise 4K (which depends on viewing distance) they actually mean HDR (which doesn't depend on viewing distance).

Otherwise yes, they are parrot-like idiots.

I have a high end Sony 55" 1080p TV from 2012 that I bought at half price on a good deal (1500€ still). I use it as as monitor on my media center PC. It has everything you could ask for on a TV (sharp and clean picture, lots of picture tweaking possibilities, multiples inputs for retro consoles), and works really well as a computer monitor, unlike most entry/medium range 4k TVs sold nowadays and before.

The only worthy reasons I would upgrade it would be :
a) If my current TV died (duh)
b) To upgrade it to a bigger OLED 120hz/Gsync/VRR panel. I own a 1440p/165hz/gsync monitor and I'd love to have the same smoothness when I go "couch". LG 65+CX TV's are still too expansive here though (+2500€), so it's not worth it yet.

4k is secondary, I wouldn't play in 4k anyway since it would mean lowering settings too much and make games uglier and/or more choppy.
Yet, I'm still interested in getting a PS5 for it's exclusives in the coming year or the next, and like OP I'd like to know how games are rendered on a 1080p panel. Downsampling can look nice on 3D scenes but 2D UI's tend to suffer from it.

4k snobs are hilarous, marketing done right I guess.
I also fully emphasize with people owning one these amazing high end Panasonic plasma TVs, "upgrading" will be difficult.

I don't think you're quite right. Aliasing depends on the supersampling method, the internal render resolution and AA used. It could be even worse on a 4k set, depending on the factors listed above. And no, the PS4 wasn't "30hz", framerate was a per game thing.

Hey OP I was just watching a PS5 AMA/livestream and it looks like it still has downsampling. So your 1080p TV will look better than a regular 1080p output. It'll still look great, go for it and upgrade if and when possible.

Thanks for the tip. Will buy it and wait a little longer to upgrade my tv that doesn't need to be upgraded, hahaha.
