Super Mario 3D All-Stars |OT| So Long So Long Gay Bowser

SUPER MARIO 64 - 1996

Plot summary: Peach baked you a cake, Bowser put her inside the castle walls or shit. Storm the castle and bake that ass!

SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE - 2002

Plot summary: A Ron Jeremy impersonator fucked up Isle Belle Delphine. It's up to you to get shit cleaned. Make her squirt!

SUPER MARIO GALAXY - 2007

Plot summary: Bowser answers the Fermi Paradox and we meet best girl Rosalina. Rescue Peach and bang them to the moon!

...

Fittingly, that's it for effort. HAHA! Now that that's over with, please do not come to this thread to shitpost. Share your adventures! Talk about your favorite Stars and Shines. Your least favorite ones. R U MR GAY? IS L REAL 2401? What about that book inside that door? So many mysteries, bing bing wahoo all of them. May the real All-Stars be the friends we make along the way.

Personal impressions after half an hour: No input lag that I can notice, Super Mario Sunshine looks fucking phenomenal, as does Galaxy. 64 is a bit rougher with the 4:3, but honestly it feels light years ahead of either the Wii U or Wii VC releases.

BONUS CONTENT

Unlike Nintendo, we at GAF have bonus material to go along with this collection. Komatsu Komatsu worked these beautiful Game Boy Camera inspired banners that go into some detail about the development of 64 and Sunshine:

Waiting for my copy to arrive to my job tomorrow, so I’ll have to drive over to pick it up since I’m off (didn’t know I’d be off or else I’d have had it sent to the house)

Tried to play SUnshine couple of times, but it looked too generic.

Will try it again.

SM64 and Galaxy are just masterpieces, so if you have money to spend - just buy it.

If "I can emulate it" is enough for you and you don't need to play the games - good for you. More money to spend on beer/books/chicks/cars/kids/whatever.

I caved and bought it digitally. It unlocked here in BR-land some 15 minutes after 1 am, which was very weird.

For reals? Enjoy it friend. Still the best movement in the series.

I fiddled with the DS version but gave up quickly. I missed most of the N64 save for Golden Eye.

Sunshine will be pretty fresh too. I remember hating what little I played of it on the GameCube. Galaxy is fucking amazing though.

Wow, then you're in for a treat. Mario 64 has awesome level design. Being their first attempt it's not perfect, but the set pieces are pretty memorable. And like I said, the movement is phenomenal.

welp, I've never played Sunshine or Galaxy. I have played 64 but never got too far. I think the most stars I've ever gotten across the n64 version when I was a kid was like 30 or something. Gonna give it a good effort here since I preordered it and will be getting it tomorrow.

Question though, I don't want to just play through 64 all in one go before seeing the others, so I'm planning on playing 64, and either SS or Galaxy at the same time. Which should I go with between SS or Galaxy? Which did most people prefer?

I got the first two stars in each game just to feel them out, my impressions:

-It is great how quickly things get going in 64, especially compared to the other two that frontload cutscenes before the bulk of the gameplay. Feels great on a Pro controller

-Sunshine in widescreen is awesome and the change in controls feels much better than I expected. I normally don't play games inverted, but the de-inversion of FLUDD has really thrown me for a loop and I keep falling into old habits and shooting the wrong direction. I really wish they'd have provided the option for the old way, but I'm sure I'll acclimate eventually

-Damn Galaxy still looks amazing in motion, it's hard to believe this was a fairly early Wii game. This has actually always been my least favorite of the three, but the game feels much more comfortable for me no longer being held hostage by the Wii Remote. Pointing with a Pro Controller works acceptablely, and shaking being mapped to a button is a game changer. After dipping into each I'm probably now most excited to play through Galaxy again with these new controls.

Overall a great set of games through and through. Yeah, I wish they'd have done more, but in their (mostly) original state these games all still hold up super well.

Everybody likes Galaxy better. I mean, there's probably a couple weirdos that like Sunshine better, but can you really call those people?

Play them in order. Galaxy is 60 fps, while Sunshine sits at 30. And on top of that, Galaxy is the much better game so it might not feel all that awesome when you get to Sunshine.

Okay, but more seriously, I'm looking to hearing Galaxy's soundtrack again. I've got a way better sound setup than I did last time around, and I'm sure the audio output is dramatically better than the Wii's, so I'm hoping for an experience. That was the first Mario game that really kicked the music into high gear, and I love it.

Just booted it up and grabbed 3 stars in Mario 64. Game cleaned up pretty nice.

I just had a quick look before I shoot off to work and yeah, it looks right and feels right. As a SM64 high church purist even the slightest thing being wrong would make me sperg, but so far it looks legit. The whole package feels really good honestly. That's my weekend taken care of.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Awesome OT, even awesome-er subtitle

I was playing some Smash earlier on and got the Galaxy stage with Galaxy music and that gave me some goosebumps. That's one awesome OST.

It's just a bunch of GREAT old games.

But yeah. Basically it is.

Honestly, I don't understand the "they're just old games" mentality that some people actually have with this. I could understand if it was a collection of Assassin's Creed games, but this is fucking Mario. Some of the best games ever. You can criticize the $60 price tag or the limited availability, or the relatively low effort that went into the ports, but like.... these are good-ass games.

This might veer into controversial territory too early in the OT, but while I find the price to be awful and the limited availability to be inexcusable, I do like that they didn't mess with these games. Widescreen for Mario 64 would have been as far as I would have gone, even pushing for 60 fps might have felt a bit wrong. I guess I'm a bit of a purist. Make sure the games look good in HD and then let the art style do the talking.

For instance, the ultimate version of OOT is the original OOT but with widescreen, upscaled out of the ass and a steady fps, be it at 30 if 60 feels awkward. Like what we got for Mario 64 in this collection IMO is more adequate than the 3DS remake that messes up a lot of things about the original. Nintendo games age like fine wine, just give them a shower and send them out to the floor again*

*with adequate pricing.

I actually like the limited availability. It feels like you got in on something special, and it's fun to look down on all those plebs who didn't get it in time and will have to pay hundreds on ebay for the privilege.

... or something like that. I would be fucking pissed if I only found out this existed after the fact.

I'm not sure if this is true, but he feels faster than other 3D Marios.

yeah, it is honestly surprising how good the 3d world was in Mario 64. The movement was awesome. I don't think anything else that generation matched it... well, exce
It's also important to play them in order otherwise the story makes no sense. You need to play 64 in order to feel the full weight of Princess Peach being kidnapped in Sunshine. Then it's even more impactful when it happens yet another time in Galaxy.
but you spoiled it for me :messenger_pouting:

how was I supposed to know Peach would get kidnapped in all 3 games? :messenger_anxious:

Sunshine turned me off at first but there is so much to be had and the FLUDD turns out to be so insanely useful. Level variety and objectives are pretty good as well. The game has a LOT of Galaxy in it.

The devs thought “how do you top Mario 64?” and decided to give him a jet pack!

I personally think its the Dark Souls of Mario games. I hope it finds newfound popularity in this age of difficulty appreciation.

Anyone who gets 120 Shines has my respect. And its my favorite Mario.

Man, this penguin needs to shut the fuck up.

When you fall from great heights in the snow you get stuck, neat.

Can you now see where have you found your blue coins? No one has said you can, so I doubt they fixed that, but it would be a great addition.

Enjoying this so far, but yeah, as I feared, the adaptation of the motion controls in Galaxy is sub par.

They really should’ve had the star bits attract to Mario automatically while in proximity. Constantly taking my hand off the Switch’s right side to swipe/tap the screen is incredibly cumbersome, clumsy, and breaks the pacing of the gameplay. And shootIng with R2 is totally useless, I mean....wtf is this supposed to achieve? They shoot at a random area. They needed an automatic lock on to the closest enemy. Also, the sheer laziness of the rom dump is apparent when you can’t even use the analog and buttons to select save game or star select. C’mon Nintendo, jeez.

Otherwise it’s good but I’m tempted to hook up my Wii as it’s better played as it was designed.
