Eurogamer - Final Fantasy 16's exclusivity is a mess

"There's confusion over the exclusivity of Final Fantasy 16, which was described upon its reveal last night as a PlayStation 5 "console exclusive".

No mention was made of timed console exclusivity, or whether PC might launch at a different time.

But, shortly after the presentation, trusted industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls stated on Twitter he had been told by Sony the game was "six months full exclusive and 12 months console exclusive", suggesting it would arrive on PC half a year after PS5, and be free to launch elsewhere after a full year.

I asked Square Enix for clarification on Final Fantasy 16's release and exclusivity this morning, but the publisher was unable to provide it.

"We have no further information on if Final Fantasy 16 will be released on platforms other than the PS5," a Square Enix spokesperson told me, the tape on their mouth beginning to inhibit oxygen flow."

So now FF16 is joining DS? So no 3080 pocketed, no exclusives picked up. What a 24 hour day this was.

It's clearly them wanting people to think so as they hope people will buy a PS5 for those exclusives then they'll come to PC later when people have already been swindled. Those clever bastards, well they would've been if they didn't completely fuck it up like they did :D
I wouldn’t be surprised if ff16 comes out on pc sooner than later as it’s a third party game, but DeS is owned by Sony so that one may be a few extra years

One thing is clear... it will launch on my platform of choice.

If when it releases only does on a sony platform why would they want to say when if ever is gona be released on any other platform?

Ey FF16 is playstation console exclusive... but don't worry in a year you will be able to buy it on xbox.

The tweets in question:

By that it looks like it's 6 months and then everything else is free reign. We 100% know it will come to PC at some point, the trailer was running on PC ffs. The only doubt it whether Square Enix will ever bother with an Xbox port later on.

It's only confusing for people who aren't getting a PS5

I think that's the point... They should just be clear and say it's a timed exclusive and they aren't in control of what Square Enix decide to do after that point.

Timed seems the most obvious, this is looking right back to the days of FF7-FF9 really. Nothing to be surprised about as far as business strategy.

I imagine most of these exclusive contracts have wording that prohibits talking about the length or nature of the exclusivity for a period of time (definitely before the initial game launch). If you know a game is coming somewhere else in 6 months, you may very well wait it out. Not knowing if it's 6 months or 2 years will lead more people to just buy it for the exclusive platform.

If it was made specially for PS5 it's a poor poster child for the machine.

As usual, Eurogamer is whining about nothing, and they have not paid attention. The following is patently false.

No mention was made of timed console exclusivity

From the trailer that launched at the same time as the livestream.

And this dude also doesn't know what he's talking about.

no official confirmation of FF XVI coming to PC

No official confirmation my ass. This is straight from Sony's livestream. As usual, analysts don't know squat, and those that cite them in articles like they knew something, don't know basic journalism.

Sony is intentionally misleading people to think games are more exclusive than they are, and that they were made just for the PS5 when they sure as hell weren't.

I mean....not really. First off, this is Square, not Sony, second off they could have had something in the contract to never even talk about other versions if that was even the case as we've see that a bunch.

So its hard to argue a publisher it trying to mislead people about a title they don't own, won't publish and could have simply put in some contract to never even confirm a PC version...... Especially when you consider that version isn't even coming at launch. So its hard to say such a thing when Square themselves are telling you its coming to PC and even that information was literally in the trailer during a PS5 event.

That sounds like they are doing a bad job "misleading" if you ask me...

Even those claiming "No mention was made of timed console exclusivity" completely ignored the fucking trailer....it literally states its coming to PC...., where it goes after is up to Square, not Sony.. How Sony would know or even care what Square's plans are after that deal is done is beyond me, their worry is about getting a deal to get the game first, not fucking dictate later on where it goes or something as for all we know, Square may not even have much plans to even put this on XB for obvious reasons.

I still remember Microsoft pulling shit with Rise of the Tomb Raider, so fuck em.
Come on, that’s such a clickbait. We all now this shit ain’t exclusive for long.

We’ve known about timed console exclusive from these companies since last gen man. Your memory is short as fuck.

With Tomb raider it was very clearly communicated that it was a timed exclusive from day 1. Still a shorty practice, but Sony tried to make people think it was a true exclusive. Big difference

Very few games are lifetime exclusives. Its not a deal that anyone really wants to make or more to the point, pay for. Ergo, any exclusivity period is very likely finite, and often subject to how well the title sells at retail. e.g Nier: Automata getting a belated port to Xbox despite Platinum having no plans for it initially. Its in the interests of both parties to keep their options open.

All this stuff is elementary. It shouldn't be confusing to anyone who's been gaming for any length of time, let alone alleged professional journalists, which is why Eurogamer's affected "it's a mess" stinks so badly of FUD.

I'm sorry, but this is as cut-and-dried as it gets.

This might be shitty thing to say but this exactly the reason why I can't ever see myself buying Xbox. Its fucking coin toss in what games it might get and not get. As messy this whole FFXVI exclusivity announcement was, I was still 100% sure it was coming to Playstation.

Protip: Any time anyone anounces anything as Exclusive*, it’s just for a limited 6 months to 1 year time frame.

No need to thank me. Still sucks yeah but that’s what money does. It’s all for show, first to the goal and all that shit, if you will.

not confusing for me since I will have PS5
This is exactly what I'm talking about! it can be exclusive or multiplatform or even something in between, you can still be rest assured that its coming to Playstation consoles....with Xbox you never know, you just have cross you fingers and hope it does get released on xbox as well.

They need to buy proper exclusivity... this timed exclusive stuff is annoying bullshit and makes people think other games will come to other consoles eventually too.

Clarity is valuable.

It's crap.

It was on the PS1.... Still is on the PS5. If someone is happy with that... Well... Congrats I guess...

After buying FF15 at release, who cares? It will be 6 months until it's worth playing anyway.

Some will be out here waiting for that remix, ultima, royal edition, episode complete edition, season finale edition lol

R Redlight agreed. I simply think they are grasping at straws trying to make story out of something that just isn't a real story... They are confused about information given to them literally on the trailer about a console exclusive, that tells you directly on the trailer its coming to PC? smfh. The fact that they can even make an article making the statements about this information literally disproves any fucking "confusion". Its like "show me more where it shows its coming to PC", but yet....they are confused yet can find all the information regarding this topic? Makes little sense.

I think they looked at FF7 sales and found that it’s profitable to be under Sony exclusivity.

FF7 got a crazy marketing push from Sony, which has to be worth a ton of money. I'm sure Sony also gave some cash on top of that.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Or you know, instead of grasping straws where it’ll come out, why not get a PS5 instead because it’s coming out there for sure if you really want the game.
