Lol I'm so happy JK made her billions before the lynch mob came for her character since she's already well off. I was interested in checking out what the outrage was about once I heard about the controversy months ago, and was shocked to learn that she had not incited violence or said anything hateful about trans people at all. Just that transgender women are not biological women and real women deserve their own spaces.
I had a trans person/close friend come out to me after working with them for 2 years at my on campus job in college, the most nerdy, nice guy I had ever met and the last person I'd say would be trans if you asked me earlier. So gender dysphoria is definitely a real thing and I will definitely call you whatever name people want out of respect, but my brain shuts off when you try to demand people say that trans people are somehow biologically what they are identifying as.

And I'd just like to add how badass J.K Rowling is. Before her factual stance on biological sex she has always been getting shit from other sides for being anti trump and a hardcore women's right activist. The women's rights activist parting being what got her into this current mess since trans women are not women by definition and she wouldn't run with that lie. But instead of backing down from the outrage she got for this as she's been getting bullied online for years, she has made sure to double down in her defense of biological women and not let the lynch mob bully her into submission.

Honestly this transgender topic has been bothering me for a long time just because of how illogical the whole thing is. And it often feeds into the archaic stereotypes that to be a man you have to have short hair, dress and act a certain way. And to be a women you need to have long hair, wear makeup etc. What makes the most sense to me and reality is to tell people that you can still be a man with long hair (i have it), wear makeup, be feminine. Just like a woman can break all of the "female" stereotypes and that its okay. That's what doctors should be telling kids with gender dysphoria and not rushing them into hormones and surgeries, and pretty much all that J.K Rowling has said on the matter. Nothing controversial, nothing bigoted.

I think the real issue is that there is a lot of evangelical pushing of teenage kids through the process and the checks and balances that should be in place to say "are we sure about this for this patient?" are being eroded by accusations of transphobia or fear of accusations. So basically the person who's job it is at the Tavistock to push back was undermined and no real curbs were taking place.

This is a fairly good cross-section of the debate (not sure why it won't embed)

it's a really difficult issue because transitioning early is beneficial for young people who truly suffer from dysmorphia. But you're dealing with children and teenagers (and in some cases parents with their own agenda) who don't have enough perspective or maturity to really make that judgement and in some cases come to profoundly regret the choices they made in later life.

Trans kids are real. But the problem is that not enough consideration is given to the fact that early transition of someone who isn't actually dysmorphic is as damaging as refusing treatment to someone that is. It's unbalanced and that's because organisations like Mermaids are not neutral.

I've wondered this as well. Are transvestites (or crossdressers or drag queens or whatever term they use today) inherently part of the LQBTQRS spectrum or only if they internally id as gay? Is Ru Paul a he or a she due to being a drag queen or is he/she actually trans as well?
