PS5 Pulse 3D Wireless Headset

I just had a read through this. Sounds pretty impressive from Sony.

Their PS4 gold headsets were meant to be decent mid range level although the build quality wasn't great so they tend to break after about 2 years. They cost €90 so not too price for 2/3 years worth.

However these will probably replace their platinum range which usually cost about €160 so more high end.

I'm using Astro A40 with my ps4 so the question is will Sony's new range feel like a downgrade?

If I use the headphone jack instead of the wireless dongle am I going to miss out on the virtual surround?
IIRC with the Platinum headset you miss a few things without the wireless dongle.

Yes, the headphone jacks on the controller don’t give you the best sound, at least on PS4. Going to have to assume it’s the same with PS5 unless that’s an issue that can be fixed and Sony addresses it with the DualSense.

I had the first pulse for PS4 for 3 years or so and never broke or gave me any problem. Maybe mine was in the lottery. Maybe i would buy this one we will see.

A big reason I'm thinking of getting a new headset is due to the fact I need to buy a $40 + shipping HDMI splitter from Astro. I'd usually wait for a days of play sale on the headsets but if it means I don't have to get an adapter I might as well get them day 1.

Got like 4 good years out of my astros so very happy with them and it was on a clearance sale.

3D audio works perfectly fine plugged into the 3.5mm jack. It also works plugged into an Xbox (One X or Series X) or Windows 10 PC. Actually, you don't even need a Sony headset, any pair of stereo headphones can receive 3D audio. It doesn't even need to be a game, there are tons of 3d audio demos on YouTube (search for HRTF audio).

My main concern (same as every other PS headset) is they look fragile

I've had 3 sets of sony golds, 2 of them the band broke on the top

These look very plastic, so I dont expect them to last long

I hope they can improve that. Or is it a limitation of the controller size or wireless or something? I have these amazing beyer dynamic headphones but the sound just comes out so weak and tinny plugged into the controller

Phone jack in DS4 outputs only stereo and it's not amped so it's quite pointless to use Platinums with it. I also see no reason not to use the dongle.

I've been using Platniums since they released and I'm happy with sound quality and battery. The build is okay, band is metal so it shouldn't break. The only problem is the plastic film on pads which started chipping off after maybe 4 or 5 years so I'll have to replace them. I'm going to buy the new headset anyway since having two will be more convenient. I use it for both work and gaming, many hours a day.

Are the PS4 Gold good headphones? I'm about to get one!

These new ones look sick!

The plastic breaks on the golds pretty quickly, but they'll still work with some duct tape. Platinum's hold up much better and go on sale for $100 pretty often. Hopefully they took the Gold breakage factor into account when designing the Pulse for PS5.

I have Astro A40+mixer as well, it sounds good but the bass is flat as fuck. It's good for audible books not gaming! Gonna ditch it when I get my hands on Pulse 3D, Sony headsets in general are known for great bass and clarity!

Can't say anything about the Platinums, a friend had the Pulse and his mic was damn good. Also better build quality.

I suppose there's a reason why the golds are much cheaper. You get what you pay for.

Interesting.

So let me get this straight. Pulse is Sony's old ps4 range that got replaced by the platinum range which will soon be replaced by pulse 3d? And Golds are the current budget range?

I wonder will the PS5 just have the pulse 3D range from cheap to expensive or will the pulse 3D be the expensive ones with a different name for the cheaper ones.

Do you work for Sony because you're really selling me on these 😂.

My mate upgraded to the new astros and he said they sounded much better so probably was the bass. New astros are out of my price range so as long as the pulse 3d is under €200 I think I'll get them day 1. Be nice getting a new console/headphone combination in the same day.

Do you use your XM3 with ps4.
You plug it in controller or can it do wireless?

I think I'd need to plug it in to use it directly (In the controller headphone jack I guess?) with my PS4 but I don't have to because my soundbar (HT-ZF9) has a bluetooth transmitter and my PS4 goes into the soundbar.

I never tried pairing it with the PS4 directly but my 2016 flapship Sony TV doesn't even support it through BT so I'm not hopeful.

Did you know?: The name "Sony" is based on the latin root word for sonic/sound ("So-", which comes from "sonus") and the rest comes from the phrase "Sonny Boy", which was an American term they borrowed and used to mean "upstanding, respectable young man" in Japan. They also made these little mascot dolls and gave them away with products:

The clarity is great in A40+Mixer, I would give the headset to someone I think or use it for video production purposes on PC. But bass is so critical to me, and they're pretty flat. A50 have good bass, as I heard and read on rtings review. The 1000XM3 and nearly all Sony headphones pack a great punch for bass, and PlayStation headset to have the more powerful due to 50mm drivers. Pulse 3D is a day one for me, you can wait and check the feedback and reviews if you're hesitant.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I like how it has both 3.5mm and WIreless. I have been looking for a headset that I can use on Xbox and PC but this might overtake it if it reviews well.

Not sure, I’m no techie. I do think that’s it’s the limitation of the headphone jack. Really hoping that the DualSense can rectify it since 3D audio is a big talking point

Aren't the Gold 2 better in this department? By Gold 2 I mean the newest version.

But the headphone jack in other devices doesn't seem to have that issue?

It just feels like they limit the volume in software or something

What's mindblowing is that they still have that adapter to run the headset. What's wrong with bluetooth???? And also, my XM3 is pretty much my go to headset and I hope it does work on the PS5 WITH the 3D audio support.

I'm preordering these when I preorder my PS5.
Do you think a pre order is required or could I just get them on the day?

I actually have bubble wrapped taped around the top because the padding for your head broke off so I don't think they'll be much use! I'll keep them for my ps4 incase there's any post ps5 use for it.

Before Pulse there was a headset called 2.0 which I had, I never had Pulse or Gold. Generally, I prefer to pay more for a product that lasts longer. Platinums were introduced mid-gen, if I remember well. Maybe they'll do the same this time, too.

Most people I play with have Gold or Astro headsets and I think I have better sound positioning. We have lots of "didn't you hear him coming?!" discussions. I don't really care about bass, sound separation is my priority. For music, I prefer monitor type speakers which have flat characteristics.

Sony headsets dont pair with their TVs? If true thats the dumbest thing Ive seen all day!

I dont like suspended headband and over ear headphones make my ears hot.
Koss porta pro. Always. Best comfort, breathable... And sounds of good with amazing bass (somehow), clarity and open sound which sounds 3d even in stereo

BT generally sucks balls inside TVs but Sony is the worst for it. I think its more a BT protocol compatibility thing, who knows. I know I always just recommended buying an adapter that goes in the headphone jack, or a soundbar/receiver with BT transmitter if are buying that as well.

Was considering buying the M3 since they just got a nice price slash to go with my Jabras.

But need to check if they will be compatible for sure with both PC and PS5. I was surprised to see that a Sony headset does not pair with their own TV. Thats just silly.

Sony headsets are awful, overpriced for the sound "quality" that you get and they aren't comfortable either. These looks pretty awful. They're also the least comfortable thing you can put on your head in consumer electronics.

Since the AMAZING 3D SOUND(simulation that PC has had for years now) works on ANY TV or Headphones, buy a good pair from Sennheiser or Audiotechnica or AKG but leave these turds in the store.

The PS5 is Bluetooth 5.1, then I think it should be ok.
I believe Bluetooth 4.2 significantly improved audio capabilities.

I wonder why that is? Is it tasting some special Bluetooth codec?
It's not BT, 2.4 GHz radio transmission. That's why you have a dongle and you can't connect a phone to it. New BT headphones with aptX have reduced lag but it's still a bit noticeable. BT is an all-around standard with low energy requirements, it's not suitable for audio with good quality.
