REPORT - Microsoft is “Spending a Lot of Money on Something That Isn’t an Acquisition”

Microsoft have made heavy investments in several areas to make a compelling case for the value of Xbox as we move into next-gen, from several major studio acquisitions to bolstering Xbox Game Pass on a near-constant basis with major new additions and perks. And it seems they might be ready to spend even more money on another major new deal, which might not necessarily be a studio acquisition.

While Microsoft do seem to still be on the lookout for adding another studio to the Xbox Game Studios lineup, during the recent GamesBeat Decides podcast, reporter Jeff Grubb said that he’s heard Microsoft are spending a large amount of money on something new, and that it isn’t necessarily an acquisition.

“I have heard that Microsoft is spending a lot of money on something that isn’t an acquisition,” Grubb said. “That’s what I’ve heard. It’s not an acquisition, and the way it was raised to me, it seemed like it would be a big deal.”

Kinda Funny’s Imran Khan added that he had heard the same
While the specifics remain unclear, it is interesting to know that Microsoft are continuing to make major investments as we head into next-gen. Recently, they announced that EA Play would be added to Game Pass Ultimate for free, so it’s possible Microsoft might have more Game Pass-related news up their sleeve.
Grubb went on to guess that perhaps they’re putting a deal in place for a major third party game or some expansion to come to Game Pass, which certainly seems like a possibility.

It seems that another major monetary transaction is being made or has been made over at Xbox studios. With already several newly acquired studios ready with games for launch and upgraded to the Xbox Live and gamepass services I suspect this purchase will be a major surprise.

After spooking Sony with low cost moves because of better designing and manufacturing engineers all Microsoft needs is another big push. Maybe a major new IP purchase or a revival of an iconic classic that hasn't had a game for awhile? Who knows, but Microsoft need to make sure everything lines up to make sure the situation with the Xbox One doesn't repeat again.

I could see them making a deal with someone like Capcom or Sega to just put all their releases on Gamepass day 1 and lock them into that agreement for at least a couple years. It'd be a good get, and in advertising it'd be attractive to be able to say "Play the latest releases from MS + EA + Sega through Gamepass Ultimate".

It would be a much bigger deal if it was Activision or Ubisoft but I do not see either of them taking that deal.

Kinda wish they would use some of that money to make another original studio though.

If reports are true that Sony was spending truck loads to other publishers to tie up exclusives content. They could say fuck it and do the same.

then us consumers gain fuck all. Well besides list warriors

It would be an insane move if they try to pull Uplay+ into GamePass it would obviously cost a ton of money upfront plus a cut of GamePass subscriptions, but that would make all Ubisoft games release Day 1 on GamePass. Xbox would have direct access to a huge library of franchises from Assassin Creed, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, Raindbow Six, The Division, Ghost Recon, to smaller ones like For Honor, The Crew, Trackmania and potential even some revivals like Splinter Cell.

This sort of deal also keeps Ubisoft multi platform, but with a home base on Xbox through GamePass. PS, Nintendo, and PC gamers would still have access to all their games with out feeling left out, while Xbox gamers get a phenomenal deal if subscribed to GamePass.

Also if this were to happen it would most certainly require a price increase to GamePass to $20 at least, which would still make it the best gaming deal available both content wise and price wise.

I think the UPlay thing for me is the most likely of all the stuff I've seen thrown around.

All it does is strengthen XGP even more. Imagine a one stop subscription with all new MS 1st Party games, EA Play vault games, UPlay vault games/however UPlay works and various other 3rd party titles. Insane.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Valhalla ends up on Game Pass as well before any sort of UPlay deal.

I wonder if the pastebin about Konami is actually true.
They're not buying konami entirely but use of multiple IPs .
Something like Konami gets royalties on any game MS sells that has already been made but newly made games based on said IPs AFTER this deal konami does not get any royalties.

It's possible!
Possible that silent hill will be on Xbox.
Sony be sweatin if true.
