Source: PlayStation 5 to adjust plans in response Xbox Series X pricing

If its true they might make a loss but at the same time its great for consumers as the ps5 and ps5 digital are equal in power theres no 4tf of power theres no less space on the harddrive so 100 dollars more then series s is a great value

In that context, true, but to get people into adopting digital more so since they make much on on the back-end of that return via software in their garden, then absolutely.

We shall see.
There's only so much cost they can eat. If the disc version was profitable by a decent margin at $499 then people might have a case. Since XSX is rumored to be selling at a loss at $499 and PS5 is rumored to be more expensive to make or roughly the same they aren't gonna eat a $100 loss for taking out a $20-30 drive when they are already taking a loss on the system. Even if they slap $50 off that is still a bigger loss on the digital version than the disc one. People expecting Sony to take an additional $70-80 loss on a console on top of the loss they are already taking, seriously just think about how ridiculous it sounds.

Maybe, maybe not. It's the beauty of anonymous insider sources. The NY Times does it all the time and is the "paper of record". Trafficking on built up legitimacy.

But on the off chance Sony was crazy and stupid enough to think they could get away with $600........... Good.

Your source can be anonymouse but you have to mention where from to make it believable (e.g. an AAA studio, an SIE executive)

Definitely not from a known Pigeon, currently residing in London and studying art. Or from that guy, staring in Jurassic Park, the one trying to escape in the jeep and gets attacked by a Dilophosaurus (dino with big ears) ... definitely not those two.

:wink:wink:

Sure, it was impossible for Sony to ever envision Series X being sold at 499, just like they couldn't, even in their wildest dreams, have predicted the master stroke of engineering genius that is 52 cu's... not even when they shop at the same chipmaker.

Eh, even amateur nerds like ourselves managed to guess the Xbox prices. I don't see Sony changing anything because of this. But they probably do wish that too went with two power tiers at this point.
No. Having one sku/performance target has its advantages. Later they can come out with a pro but the baseline will be a 10.3Tflop PS5. Thats the issue I see with the XSS, it would probably be best code for the XSS then upscale to the XSX. As the generation matures a 4Tflop console could be a bottleneck.

I still don’t think 399 is possible. Sony will be taking around 110$ loss on that

PS5 BOM 450 to 470 + manufacturing +shipping +storage +retailer cut = 530 for PS5 and 510$ for DE
I think they know that 399 price is magical. It worked wonders for them with PS4. So I have a feeling they'll want to have one of the PS5 editions at that price at least.

Sony execs settled on the ps4 price right before the e3 conference.
In 2013 Sony was nimble and agile for dumping the camera pack-in and undercutting the Xbox One price at the 11th hour.

In 2020, it's now somehow beneath Sony to react to what the competition is doing.

I don't think companies just change plans on the fly for something like this. The only thing I am pleasantly shocked at today is the xbox series X pricing in Canadian dollars. I hope Sony has the same pricing plans but I am not holding my breath.

It does in terms of deciding how to price consoles when you know the mass market are going to be teenagers who have time to play and parents who aren't going to spend 600 dollars for what they consider a "toy"

We aren't the majority here, there's a reason the Wii was in everyone's home.
I understand your argument but I'm not certain that logic still applies. Gamers on average are way older than they were. I'm not certain teens are your ideal market anymore, especially now.

$399 digital would sell like hotcakes and force series s to $249. It might force series x to $399 or $449 too.

I wouldn't say that but if Xbox fails Microsoft will survive. If PlayStation fails......
Microsoft of course will survive but once again people making the common mistake that MS and Xbox are the same thing. If Xbox fails again you can bet your ass there will be no more xbox in the future. Xbox can disappear the next day and MS will not even notice. Sony on the other hand will do everything possible to not allow the PS5 to fail. They would be willing to put their hands really deep in their pockets in order to save their business. And probably much more deeper than MS.

I doubt this story. But at the same time, I think Sony deserves it.

The amount of time they've waited to explain the details around system launch is unprecedented for them.
I doubt this website is getting genuine information when Sony has kept so much on lock down. But I also cannot image Sony wouldn't have a meeting to discuss their price after the competitor plays their hand. So whether they change plans or not, I bet a meeting will be or has been held.

I hope I am wrong on this, but I think the pricing will be this:

DE $499
Standard $599

They will not take too much flack with a console with almost the same specs as the XSX at the same price, but you will be forced into all digital. $449 and $549 I think would be better, but I really think the above price is correct.

We will have to wait and see. Sony could surprise us all.

For those saying that it'll only be a $50 difference between disc and discless:
  • iPhone 6s 16GB: $199 on contract, $649 full retail
  • iPhone 6s 64GB: $299 on contract, $749 full retail
  • iPhone 6s 128GB: $399 on contract, $849 full retail
Look at the iPhone prices there. Does anybody believe that a 16 to 64GB price jump should be the same as 64 to 128? No, it shouldn't. Apple did and does this because it pushes the buyer into a specific price target. The 6s 16GB was there to create the illusion of a good deal, but it was a crippled phone that couldn't handle as much. Pushing the buyers there would allow apple to then sell iCloud Storage.

Now look at the PS5
  • X49
  • X99
Most people wouldn't buy the target version because for only $50 you can get a disc reader. Now, when looking at a $100, your inner impulsive buyer will look at the short term gains of saving that amount.

Sony's target is the Discless version, so they will sell it substantially lower to "force" buyers into that product, as it will yield a long term benefit on online purchases (can't be resold, cost less to produce due to package and logistics, PS Store takes a cut from 3rd party sells, etc).

And I'll say it again

499 / 399. That's it.

Removing only the blue ray saves like 10 bucks for sony do making the DE $399 is really gonna hurt if it's true that the console is expensive

Im skeptical of this, far too hard to just change everything at a moment's notice, but true or not a huge round of applause to Microsoft for keeping the industry competitive!

Weird how prices have just gotten adjusted to the same placeholder values we've seen for awhile...

There's no way Sony would pull the $599 thing again.....right? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Sony just needs to announce the price so the bitching/laughter can start and the quoting of anonymous BS can end.

Every person that buys a digital-only PS5, will for ever be excluded from the used-games market which Sony doesn't benefit from. Not to mention always paying 10-20 bucks more for games compared to (discount) webshops. They'd make a lot more money even if it's 150 cheaper than the regular PS5 over the whole generation. So 399 is entirely possible.

Anyone seriously believing that Sony was caught off guard by an Xbox Series X price of $499 is a special level of moron. It's gauranteed that they discussed their plan if the price was $399, $499 or more expensive. I know they're not perfect, but these things are discussed and considered A LOT.
I agree with you. It's so unlikely that it's basically impossible.

And yet PS3 launched in reality. I don't think they were caught off guard there, but were just making bad calls. Corporate espionage is a thing. What they can't predict is the public's reaction after things are announced, but they know pretty much everything else.
