Despite online rage, The Last of Us: Part II "has one of the highest completion rates of any" PS-4 game

With how many online have said "People played half of The Last of Us Part: II but then returned it halfway due to the narrative choices," PlayStation trophy statistics prove them otherwise as:

It may come as a surprise to some, but a lot of gamers actually don’t finish single player games. In fact, a triple A title getting a 50% completion rate can already be considered a success. For comparison, only around around a 35-40% of players finish the story of several open-world games.

Given this, The Last of Us Part II is a major success as the game has a 58% completion rate (as of this article’s writing). The game’s completion rate is based on the data in the “What I Had to Do” trophy that’s awarded to players who have completed the game’s story at least once.

tlou2_completion_rate-1024x576.jpg

Higher completion rate than:

  • Final Fantasy 7 Remake
  • God of War
  • Spider-Man (PS4)
  • Days Gone
  • Death Stranding
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Detroit Become Human

So, love it or hate it, it seems that the majority of people who played The Last of Us: Part II were interactive/emotionally compelled enough, with hate, rate, or love, to complete the main story. It appeared to have kept them hooked throughout the whole adventure.

The complaints about the lead characters show that fans don't know wtf writing a plot is about. Every single alt write up was stupid and generic as can be.

"in muh Last of Us, Joel eats a tuna sammich and some zombies come and he kills them all. The end."

These fans have the writing skills of a Game of Thrones writer.

It's crazy that the completion rate is that high after how they made us play as Abby in the second half. I was so dejected and completely zoned out, i didnt want to continue.

i guess the setpieces helped. they gave her all the best setpieces. lol

I'm quite amazed at that. I really enjoyed the game, but it had some major pacing issues. Actually had to push myself through a couple sections.

But at the end of the day, it was resting a bit on its laurels of narrative driven story from the first, so not too surprising a lot of folks saw it to the end.

Nah its clearly a case of people hated it so much they all just wanted it to end so they finished it very quickly.
I don't buy that tbh. Maybe they did hate it afterwards but I find it dishonest to complete a long game and then say afterwards "that was trash I hated every second of it." Really doesn't make sense. Like clearly the game was interesting or "fun" enough for them to complete it . Like why complete a game if your not interested. It's dishonest

Ask me about my Stream Deck
I feel like I've noticed a trend with PlayStation exclusive games this generation. They tend to have very achievable platinum trophies. They don't tend to require and particular difficulty level used and no multiplayer even if it has it at all. Maybe it's just confirmation bias, but Bloodborne, God of War, Spiderman, Horizon zero dawn, last of us 2, etc all had easy platinums.

Sorry this was off topic, but it made me realize the statement above

One of the streamers beat the game in 15-16 hours. And that included watching all cut scenes and getting killed a bunch of times so he had to redo areas.

How many hours of cut scenes are there? I know in the last few hours it was about 30-40 minutes alone as I saw him finish the game.

I bet if people skipped cutscenes, this might only be a 10-12 hour game.

Why should anyone be surprised by this? Online gaming nerds are used to it. They bitch about Calls of Doodies every year and yet every year it outsells everything.

People in are still in the faze of running around the world in Ghost of Tsushima, stopping every 10 feet to take a screenshot to give a shit about actually beating the game right now.😎

Is that surprising? It was the most anticipated title of that generation. It sold PS4s year before its release.

A good portion of its player base hated the story.

Should silence the idea that the people who hated it, didn’t finish it... but I doubt it.

Loved the first 1, beat it 5 times between PS3&4.

I gave up playing half way through #2 and haven't been back to it. Will finish it one day.

Average is 23.5 hours just for main. No side stuff

Took me about 40 which is in line with completion is average

Maybe play yourself instead of trying to assess a game by watching a stream

This really doesn't mean shit, as evidenced by much better games having lower completion rates (like The Last of Us 1, for example).

But hey, you guys were overdue for a thread where you can jerk each other off. Have at it.

TLOU has more than one version so that could explain a lower completion rate.

I think most people give up on a lot of video games after dying a certain amount of times, even if they put the game on easy.

I bet the accessibility features helped many people through this game.

The Last of Us was bundled with the PS3 and PS4 consoles. That doesn't mean they bought the console specifically for The Last of Us.

The game was available on PS Now and Playstation Plus

Glad to see that so many people who bought the game completed this game. A lot higher than expected given how recently it released and TLOU2 actually being a big game.

Here is to hoping for a big PS5 update patch for this game 🍻

Pretty much. Apologists are so desperate to validate their own bias that II is phenomenal in every respect that they completely ignore and/or willingly belittle that it rides upon the predecessor’s success.

I pushed myself to finish it precisely for that reason. Granting it the benefit of the doubt from something it was affiliated with yet didn’t earn on its own merits (at least narratively). I’d be interested to see the numbers sans the benefit it was granted from the get-go.

With no multiplayer what else are they supposed to do with their 60 dollar purchase? Just saying, most of those games listed outside of Red Dead they were all single player (Maybe U:LL had multi?) I mean you buy a single player game with no multi I assume most people are beating it, am I wrong here?

I kinda gave up after the the "take on me" cover

Like I hated control but beat it cus the special effects and combat was cool. It's okay to admit you enjoyed a game a little. Clearly many enjoyed tlou2 a bit. It's okay to admit it.

'online rage'... Was the OP made a research about the offline rage to came at this conclusion?

Just by the thread title I think not.

Was one of the most antecipated games of playstation of all fucking time... If this was good after all the money Sony spend for market, paying youtube and twittter to disable comments remove the dislike buttons and paying extra for their employers for homejob because of the pandemic, so OK I guess.

Is a sucess by that view point. 'Take that haters', because, you know, if you hate the plot you're a hater.

This is a nice percentage considering the sequel is longer. Shame there are no NG+ trophies (except for Grounded which isn't for everyone) to see how many people were willing to replay the story. I've finished TLoU 1 three times, including back to back playthroughs on my original run.

Interesting to see how a lot of people does not ends a game..

If 58% is good do not want to see the bad ones.

With all the accessibility options and the ability to skip the cheesy ass cut scenes its no wonder so many people are beating it.
Its prolly the easiest game to breeze through.

This kinda surprise me, the game is pretty long and the pacing is kinda all over the place, also people nowadays doens't even complete 10 hours games because they have the attention span of a furry at the zoo...

I think that the presentation of the game helped a lot

All you have to do is look on YouTube and read the comments on Twitter whenever this game is mentioned on PlayStation's official twitter account.

They also disabled comments because people were spoiling the game.

If 58% is good do not want to see the bad ones.

Any person who boots up a game just once gets added to the "incomplete" list. Rentals, borrowing, and even just plain quitting at any point all affect completion rate.

For example, the very first boss in Dark Souls III, who you encounter about 30 seconds into the game, has a trophy tied to beating him. Currently that trophy has been unlocked by only 87% of players, and that's just the first few minutes of the game turning away 13% of all players. I haven't even completed Dark Souls III (although it's on the list...that fucking ever growing list). Less people (myself included...and obviously percentage wise) have defeated the Deacons of the Deep than have completed The Last of Us. I'm aware Dark Souls has an overall high attrition rate, but their achievement lists make it incredibly easy to track where people stop progressing.

With that said, I personally see 58% as a VERY impressive completion rate number, no matter the game. But I also don't see why it even actually matters at all.

I guess that streamer was the best gamer in the world on launch day as his 16 hours are better than the 1000 rushed gamers in that link by 2.5 hours.
