I just finished Last of Us2 and am looking for a change of pace and would like to play a JRPG next.

I’ve already played the FF7 Remake (loved it) and am a long long time FF fan (even if I didn’t really love FF12, 13 and 15) and have heard a lot of people really like FF14. Given the new free trial, now seems like a good time to check it out. I’ve never played an MMORPG before so this would be new turf for me.

The other game I’m considering is Persona 4. About a year ago I played Persona 5 and had a blast with it. Persona 4 just came out on PC and it’s well reviewed. Is there any way I won’t love this game if I really liked Persona 5?

So yea, NeoGAF, help out here with some thoughts on where I should go next.

I can't say anything about ff14 since I've never played it, but persona 4 is a fantastic game. As someone who played persona 5 first, I had no trouble getting into it.

do you mind paying a monthly fee? if not, go with FF14. thou they have a free trial right now I think so you can take advantage of that and test it out first. they also had tighten up the early game progression with the latest update, so it should be much faster to get to the meat of the story now. the story of 14 is actually really good and the player base is pretty friendly for the most part. there's also an OT for it on GAF so you can ask questions there too.

if you don't want a MMO thou, go with Persona. both are great games and you'll have lots of fun in them.

Two vastly different games...so it will all come down to preference. Here's what I would do: since 14 has an amazing free trail right now, give that a shot. If MMOs aren't your thing, P4 Golden is also a great game if you like a good hybrid of a dating sim and a jrpg.

This is what I was originally leaning toward doing. Starting the free tri and seeing how I like it and switching to Persona 4 if I didn’t.

It’s just a really hard choice cause I really liked Persona 5 too and now Persona 4 is crushing it in the poll lol. I have limited time so if I start one of these and like it, it’ll be a while before I play the other one.

I heard going from persona 5 back to 4 can be a bit underwhelming. Don't know if jumping to a MMORPG could scratch your JRPG itch.
There are other JRPGs you could try like NieR Automata or the Tales of series (i recommend Berseria).

FFXIV is going to require you to party up to basically face every boss, which may or may not be what you are looking for in a JRPG. And personally, while I think FFXIV is on the whole great, the entire dungeon/trials system is very flawed from a design perspective as it relates to partying with other players.

Persona 4 rules, as does the previously mentioned Tales of Berseria.

If you've never played a Persona game go for P4Golden. If you like JRPGs you'll likely want to go for P5 straight away.

FFXIV is a MMO. Tried it, got bored of reading wall of text after wall of text for the initial 30 minutes, never got to it again.

Obviously very different games. I played both (got FFXIV ARR's free month and Persona 4 Golden on Vita) but i finished neither.

But from what i played i enjoyed more FFXIV even if i'm not a fan of MMORPGs. Beautiful game and it shows that a lot ov love (and money) went into its development.

Persona 4G i quitted it when i was around 70% close to complete it. I hated the time limit/sim aspects as well as the highschool setting. But the story seemed very interesting and the combat was fun even though some of its mechanics were not explained properly IMO (like the Fusions of Personas).

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Do you want to play a game that might take you 1,000 hours to finish? Or one that'll take you 70?

Both are fantastic. Do not be worried about FFXIV being an MMO. You can play it like you would any single-player RPG.

You'll team up for portions, but the game can take care of the match makin - and for story missions you do not need to be any sort of expert. You often won't even communicate with your teammates and they'll feel like npcs anyway.

Huge FF fan here as well.

Get Persona 4: Golden.

It’s an unforgettable experience, FAR above any of its contemporaries. FF14, as great as it is, certainly didn’t revolutionise MMOs or anything.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
If you liked the combat and gameplay in Persona 5, you have some options depending if you want to...
  • Play another character driven JRPG with very similar combat mechanics but a more conventional JRPG structure: Digital Devil Saga I & II (PS2)
  • You are curious about mainline SMT and don't care about character development: SMT III (PS2) or IV (3DS).
  • More of the same: Persona 4 (PC)
Whatever you choose you are in for a good time.

I mean up until the end of heavensward is completely free for XIV... while it might be getting less votes I would take it out of the two by a country mile. My advise get the free infinite trial and roll a lancer, watch as you become a dragoon the meme'st of meme classes.

Did you already play Persona 5? That's definitely a better game than 4, but both are great. So is FFXIV, but that could take several months just to get through all the campaigns.

Just get Persona 4 out of the way cause no matter how long Persona 4 may be, FF14 will be bigger and a very massive time sink and to add to that you may even play it long after the the final expansion and do end game content.

One has a definite ending and the other doesn’t. I think it’s pretty clear which one to play first.
