I'm not married just curious whats a good amount of savings to have before getting married and did your wifey know how much you had? I mean you had to let them know somehow that you weren't a scrub, right? But at the same time you don't want them thinking you're loaded or anything probably. Did you know how much savings they had before getting hitched?

I had about 10 grand, but we'd been together for almost 15 years by the time we actually got hitched, and so also had joint savings and what have you. In total we've got over 50 thousand in savings.

Don't go big on the wedding itself, and make sure you're budgeting properly to at least be able to save a bit each month, and I don't think any sane chick should be able to fault you for fiscal responsibility, even if you're not flush with cash.

we had already owned a house which we sold right before the wedding, and were lucky enough to make a nice profit. put us at >100k. otherwise, it would have been 10 - 30k

I was absolutely on a path to financial ruin, mimicking my folks, before I met my wife. She pulled me from the depths of hell, and I'll be forever grateful for it.

Definitely marriage is a good idea for guys like this. Marriage is a bad deal for most men unfortunately. Half of them fail, 80% of divorces are initiated by women, there’s very little you can do to protect yourself from the family court machine. If you’re dead set on having a family like I was you have to get married, or at least you probably should. Everyone else not so much.

I didn't realize that 80% of marriages are initiated by women, but I have anecdotal evidence to back this. I have 5 different friends / acquaintances who were blindsided by a sudden "I'm not happy anymore" by their wives. All 5 dudes wanted to go to counseling and work on the marriage to try and save it. All 5 were met with a hard no, and had to go through a divorce. 3 out of the five ex wives were dating someone else within two months, which likely means they were cheating beforehand.

Best to remember, she’s not yours, it’s just your turn.

Yep, very true most of the time. Whether your turn lasts a year or twenty, I think this is actually a healthy idea to internalize for when the inevitable happens it will help you better accept it. Happily ever after is for Disney movies, not reality. Enjoy what you get and then move on with dignity.

Got married at 35, she was 26.

wont say money or assets, but she is asian and they ask me 500 k in advance for marriage (they give u the same amount back), also the amount should not be even.
