[DF] Horizon Zero Dawn PC: An Amazing Game Gets A Disappointing Port

Well there is a PS5 coming, you’d think they’d get their shit in order to do a proper patch for faster hardware.

Personally, I'm not expecting any patch for this game. If they were to do it, it would probably still be using the same techniques - GPGPU stuff, unified memory, etc. so it may not be as bad as the PC version on PS5 either.

Thankfully the game runs alright for me (3700X & 5700XT) . I hope they patch it asap for anyone having performance issues.

I´ve been lucky too too since it runs great for me. I´ve only had one crash so far and i´m at level 25. As for stuttering i have almost no problems there either, maybe 2-3 loading stutters per 4h sessions.

8700k, 16 ram, 1080ti, Epic Store, 451.67 drivers.

I hope they get it sorted out for everyone with problems because it´s a great game imo :)

The whole game was designed around that 30fps limit. No wonder it's a mess when trying to exceed it on PC. That's why even the performance mode on PS4 Pro didn't have 60fps or unlocked frame rate.

I don't think in a million years that Guerrilla thought the game would ever end up on PC.

That doesn't make sense when the new features like the reactive small shrubbery that didn't even exist on console are 30fps.

It's just a bad port and the studio that did it aren't up to the task.

But surely that's the same code just applied to a different model? I dunno, just a guess.

Is that an actual factor in PC hardware now? Where you buy your game from determines if you get a good or bad version? 😕

No it's the same game in this case.

It's just wildy inconsistent across people with similar hardware.

I'm sure someone will eventually figure out the specific factors involved if this doesn't get fixed by the devs.

What settings / resolution do you use and how many frames are you getting?

Oh, I didn't know. That is weird then.

Yeh it's all a bit fucked up. Some animations are locked to 30fps, others at whatever your framerate is at the time, all at the same time.

So dependant on what you focus on at any given time it can appear jittery even if it's not. There are actual stutters and frame time issues that happen at times but even when those are not happening the overall image doesn't appear to be smooth because of these random things being locked to 30fps.

1600x1200 60fps v-synced. SMAA since i don´t like the blur that comes with TAA. The rest is maxed out except for the recommended sky and reflections. Those two are one step down from max. Motion blur off.

Has someone tested the game with a quad channel RAM setup?? More bandwidth might help mitigate stuttering, since the only real advantage that PS4 has over PC is Main ram bandwidth: depending on your RAM speed, DDR4 in single channel varies between 17 and 25.6 GB/s, that would translate to 34/51.2 GB/s in double channel, a far cry from the 176 GB/s the PS4 can use for loading data (if available). I've read that some users are having less stuttering with bigger RAM quantities, I'm pretty confident that Quad Channel (68/102.4 GB/s) could help solving those issues even more.

The game will be patched because the frame times are inconsistent with workload. But you are right, the game's visuals are at it's best. This is another reason I say there is not really any room for improvement that the PS5 can handle for HFW. Their system as it currently stands is next-gen ready. Their artists are top notch (just like all the other Sony exclusive companies).

For crying out loud, we were talking about Horizon Zero Dawn on PS5 getting a patch.
Here you are again making cookoo comments about this being the pinnacle of gfx on pc with no room for Horizon FW on PS5 possibly looking better, even now when you have the game in front of you.

You seriously can’t help yourself can you. I mean what’s up with you, lol?

So Horizon Zero Dawn PC betatesters owners, have there been any patches at all besides the "day 1" patch?!
Really bummed about no snow deformation and hair physics not being in. Any chance those can be patched in
tech
NeoGAF?

I tell it like I see it. I don't see improvements drastic enough with the PS5's GPU. It's just doing math. Maybe they might have someting up their sleeve, but HZD now looks pretty future-proof.

I hope they do the snow deformation. What's the hair physics problem?

To be fair, game seems to run fine with Navi - 5700XT sits between 2070S & 2080 performance on this Benchmark video from Hardware unboxed. Everything else aside from Turing seems to struggle tho & Vega performance is a joke at the moment

Holy batman at those results.

This is literally the only time I've found myself wishing I got the 2080 super instead of the 2070 super.

I don't understand what's going on with this title, I've never seen that level of disparity between the two cards.

Bugged. Hopefully a fix is coming. The PS4 version was much, much better.

The hair isn't bugged when he locks at 30fps. (or 29... see how de internal fps limiter is broken)

ps: Anyone using gpu scheduling? I saw a small cpu usage improvment here.

Here’s what I’ve discovered

1) At the start of every game I have to switch from Fullscreen to Borderless and then back to Fullscreen in order to get true Fullscreen.
2) The in-game frame-rate limiter, if set to 60 FPS, causes stutter - so switching it off is essential.
3) 60 FPS, at all times, is essential.
4) Gsync should be setup as usual. Vsync off in-game and enabled in the Control panel.

Doing this gives me ultra smooth gameplay. No frame-time issues. No stuttering. No crashes. incredible game, really. Contender for GOTY for me.... if it holds up.

Here's one. IDK, the PS4 version looks more "lively" and seems more reactive to direction/inertia.
The computer version capped at 30 still doesn't look as good imo.

Let me check on the PC.

UPDATE: Yep. I see it is not as animated. It's not a bug. But I have no idea why it's turned off. The PC version animates at the tail ends but the entire clump of hair doesn't move like the PS4 version.

Can somebody familiar with this game verify if the below is at ultra texture and model quality ?
The config file is kind of confusing when it comes to these two. AA is off, hence the aliasing.

PC version? If you want to see the textures at their best, you have to force 16X anisotropic filtering in the Nvidia control panel and set "Textures" to "Ultra" and Geometry to "Ultra"

PC, yes. I have an AMD card, so not sure I can force AF.
AF is set to 16x via the config file [Ultra from the menu was just 8x, if I understand the config file right]
Textures and Geometry is 0 in the config file for Ultra in the menu, hence the confusion.
Not sure if it's actually working though, because the LOD / DOF is weird and blurs things way too close.
If there is a way to test this, I can post screenshots.

There should be settings in the AMD driver panel to force 16x anisotropic. And that's weird that the geometry and textures would be at 0. I'd have to look at the config file.

Just passed the proving. The game is smooth as hell for me, no stuttering or anything. Weird as hell since I have a crappy card.

Really happy I can play this, it's a gorgeous game and pretty damn good so far

Did you mix the pictures up? That top one is gross. Over saturation and cranking vibrance up to 1000 doesn't create "natural/real lighting".
lol why don’t u try the mod first, which modifies shader files, or go to the page and look at the images, you can always adjust the settings on reshade to suit your taste

Reshade is almost always shit.
it depends, some are overstylized on purpose and don’t come off as intended, i think a lot of these artificial filters that games have look drab and dreary, reshade can get rid of that and allows you to customize post processing to any game on pc and alter it to your personal tastes, not a bad option to have

Agree. The super saturation shader isn't really gaining any traction with the game's looks.
lighting is much more detailed and dynamic when playing the game, maybe you have to see it in motion to get the full effect, i may need to tweak some settings to decrease some of the saturation

But the lighting really isn't changed though. It's a post-process shader that works on already rendered buffers. I'd much prefer the in-game lighting.

i guess you have to see it in real time, lighting and shadows behave more like it should in real life, where the vanilla game just seemed to cast shadows seemingly at random or not at all with no respect to light sources

As an owner of a 2070super as well I'm contemplating holding off on this game and hoping the 3080ti releases early September.

At this point I'll just brute force the damn game to perform how I want. But there still needs to be a patch to fix the 30fps animations and snow deformation.

Reshade mods are usually a bunch of oversaturated colors with copious amounts of bloom and DOF that look fantastic in still shots because they could pass for a painting or pro photograph but in terms of playing, it’s shit.

Do yourselves all a favor and pick up this natural/real lighting mod with shaders if you have beefy hardware, the difference is pretty staggering and aloy looks much better (modded pic is on top), prepare for about a 10 fps hit though

hmm, how about no
This mod is basically an s-curve, a white balance shift, and maybe some sharpening

I have this magic setting called "Contrast" in my TV. It does the same thing that this mod does and at no FPS cost!
