He delivered multiple new studios. He delivered Gamepass. He delivered a powerful new system.

It sucks that Xbox first party is still floundering, but by all accounts they have funding to make whatever they want. He doesn't actually manage the development of the games. I'd look at the people that do though.

He's still ultimately in charge of the games they choose to make and the way the studios are managed, both of which, particularly in light of Halo and now Fable, has been a total shit show under his watch.

Buying more studios at this point is just adding more games that are likely going to be utterly mishandled as well.

While I'm at it, Gamepass has further eroded any pressing need tbwy seemed to have felt to produce good games, threatens to devalue gaming generally, and leads us towards the same shitty situation TV and Movie subscription services have become. It might be cheap now, but you have to be an utter fucktard not to look at where every other form of media has ended up with it and see it's inevitable shitty future should it take off.

As for hardware, yeah, the XSX is great. Shame the XSS and decision to make all games multiplatform will make that power completely fucking pointless and further complicated and undermine their first party development.

All that power means absolutely fuck all, because they simply cannot make games as good as Playstation will, thanks to their studios only having one target to aim for.

So 5 purchases and a service? I'm not saying that Gamepass is bad or that the purchase of studios isn't a good thing, but where are the things that matter like actual games? I will go ahead and give you that Outer Worlds was well received and pretty favorable, but that was already being worked on before the Obsidian acquisition, so you can't even give that one to Phil.

He's basically the guy that made MS refocus on making games, made multiple smart purchases of new studios, made Gamepass a focus with all first party games on day one, made backwards compatibility a focus. I still don't see anything he's actually doing wrong. It takes a long time to build top tier studios. If anyone should be in the hot seat, it's the head of 343, or the head of Xbox Games Studios development as a whole.

Day one he should have been laying the course for new releases to hit 2-3 years out from that point. Which means the rewards should have been able to be reaped starting way back in 2016, or 2017 at the latest. Now he had a "leash" from Microsoft that was stopping him? A leash on the head of the division??

And Phil is out there saying this they are crushing it basically.

It starts with leadership and goes from there. You need the right people from the beginning. Phil's output is not going to just radically take a different course.

We've had seven years of Phil Spencer. We know what Xbox is like under his leadership. It's a known entity at this point. You either think he's the right man for the job based on nearly a decade of evidence, or he needs to go.

Sony stock was at 18 dollars per share when he took over. Now it's worth nearly 80 dollars a share and the company hit 100 billion market cap recently.

If I recall correctly, 2018 was the year Xbox no longer had to report to Corporate, and Phil Spencer was actually able to start making big decisions. His first move was to buy up some studios, and get their first party shit together. 343i not withstanding, I think Spencer's vision for Xbox is more attractive that both Mattrick's strategy of... whatever the fuck that was... and the trojan horse strategy before it. I think 343i needs a shake up. They've done damage to the Xbox brand, and with the move of Infinite out of the launch window they've done damage to the launch of their new console. what Phil was supposed to do with zero budget and 4 AAA studios. Phil secured money with gamepass and immediately purchased studios. Shocking games take 4-5 years to develop. Phil did not have a blank check like jim Ryan and his 750 million dollar money hats.
