The REAL story behind The Last of Us Part 2 (ONLY CONDENSCENDEURS OF HIGH ART ALLOWED!!!)

Yeah, that's not actually a counter point. That's merely a presumption on your part. Development studios iterate all the time with sequels in all manner of ways. The idea that somehow they have to deliver something akin to the same limited experience as before is strictly a comfort food eater mindset.

Nothing I wrote in that post even mentioned the ending , so why bring it up? Whether she does or doesn't kill Abby in the end is moot as far as I'm concerned because the plot went off the rails fairly early on.
The problem is that you're assuming Part 2 is the exact same as TLOU 1 when it isn't

+Refined melee
+improved animations
+Prone stealth
+Dodge
+Jump
+You can get injured by an arrow and have to remove it or your health is drained
+Dogs
+New AI system
+Improved shooting

They chose to “reinvent the wheel” with narrative, but not with the mechanics. The mechanics are copy/paste from 2013. This complaint can be directed at other games too. I’d love to see AAA studios taking more risks in the mechanics of their games.

Explain.

Its a direct continuation of the same story, and the same goes with the mechanics. More of the same, but expanded and better looking. That's how you follow up a multi-goty winner.

Bottom line, in a Naughty Dog game, you know pretty much what you're going to get, they have a house style and aren't suddenly going to pull a combat system like a Platinum game out of their ass!

And that's fine, just don't act like its a surprise! Which given the amount of pearl clutching about how the story shifts protagonists (but still plays much the same, as noted) I can't imagine the amount of salt if it suddenly played like Hitman, or Dark Souls, or any other game not made by ND!

Copy and paste? No.

Shouldn't make major changes to the mechanics since 2013's TLOU MP was very popular.

Name me 5 third person shooters with better gameplay than TLOU 2 this generation

And the gameplay is so terrible that you somehow wanted to beat the game 3 times? 😂

Here, pick 5:
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Resident Evil 3
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn
  • Death Stranding
  • Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  • Days Gone
  • Hitman
  • Hitman 2
  • Control
I never said I wanted to play it 3 times, I said I played it 3 times. Mainly so I didn’t have to entertain people saying that if I didn’t play it then I can’t speak about it or the classic “You just didn’t understand it.” First time was pretty good, second time was a slog, third time was painful and boring. I heard someone else put it this way: You’re an actor not a player; say your lines, play your part, stay on mark.

where exactly are they trying to create an illusion of non-linearity? The single open world seattle section? Come on.
The game is perfectly linear, especially story- wise and it totally owns it.

Well sorry for being harsh but this is just silly. Your whole point is that the game doesn't give you macro-scale agency and decision making as to how the story pans out = bad.
Since you haven't noticed 99% of narrative action-adventure games follow a linear plot with all agency being in the moment to moment gameplay of combat and exploration.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But this is TLOU2 and it's being held to a completely different standard of scrutiny as I'm sure you're well aware, except for noticing your own part in it.

There are many games that give you control and choice of plot altering events and that's great, I love them just as much, all for different reasons. Cyberpunk, only 3.5 months from now.
So maybe you should simply look for something you enjoy elsewhere, instead of torturing yourself with playing through TLOU2 for the fourth time?
Trust me, there’s no fourth time through that game. Maybe if they patch it for PS5 just so I can marvel at the visuals even more.

By illusion of non-linearity I mean when they have 2 routes through a space that lead to the same point, the wide open spaces that funnel you onto their prescribed path, etc. How do you get into the supermarket? The way they make you. How do you get out? The way they make you. It keeps you on a track because it needs you to see story beats in a certain sequence, which is fine, do you Naughty Dog. I’m not saying that shouldn’t exist and I think they’re smart to use their smoke and mirrors to obscure the hand of the director, but it’s there.

I don’t know what to say, maybe I’m just sick of this style of game. Naughty Dog pushes so many things forward but not the gameplay. We got ropes (the best addition), prone, and jump. I will give them props for the level design this time around, there are so many ways to approach enemies in the fight arenas and more verticality this time.

I’m indifferent to most narrative choice in games. I’m more interested in mechanics and what I can do in a space and the tools given. Immersive Sims are my kind of game (see my avatar), but it’s a dead genre now. I‘m gonna wait and see about Cyberpunk 2077. I can’t tell if it’s for me or not, though I’m leaning toward not.

It comes down to this for me: The game is trying to tell a story more than give you tools and interesting things to do with those tools. I prefer mechanics over narrative. I found The Last of Us Part II to be lacking in its mechanics. I also did not like its story.

Maybe I expected too much. I would have liked a God of War 3 to God of War 2018 shift.

You’re right, Naughty Dog has a house style. I usually am on board for their storytelling but this one didn’t hit for me, so I’m left with the mechanics, which I found to be too similar to the original and were so-so to begin with. It can still be Naughty Dog while innovating in the gameplay. I loved the ropes and wish more of them were like the puzzle where you have to knock out some glass to toss the rope through to reach the other side of a locked door. I think that was the beginning of the Hillcrest section. They are pretty straightforward outside of that one.

What’s new? Ropes, going prone, and a jump button that may as well have not been added. Ellie is Ellie+, Abby is Joel.

I disagree. If your mechanics are tight and people love them and master them (Bloodborne), then leave them be, if they have room for improvement, go for it. I actually think there’s a chance that Part II’s Factions mode will be more innovative than the single player.

Tlou2 does some amazing things. Some of the most incredible animations and artwork in the history of gaming.

If only they didn't purposefully make the female characters look like ass.

That list with better tps than tlou2 is pretty hilarious...

You loose all credibility when you insert stuff like wildlands who has dreadfull shooting and days gone who is literally clunky tlou with everything worse from animations to ia to hit reaction and gore to melee system Etc.

hitman and mgs5...there is a reason why most people don't play these games as action tps (or why it's not even their core).

Also lol at re remakes, stiff character, mostly brain dead enemies and lack of ammunition as a core mechanic, but sure, great tps games :ROFLMAO:

OP sounds butthurt that people have mostly forgotten about TLOU2 nearly two months past release.

I can't wait to play Druckmann's next game which is code titled "MANJAW" sounds fun.

As far as gameplay goes, shooting has always been janks with TLOU due to analog sticks paired with low ammo. The game moved more towards action versus rewarding stealth by conserving ammo in the first and it just didn't work for me.

It was better suited as a hybrid in the first for rewarding stealth for the players by making smart and patient decisions.

Seems like a strange concept but hear me out for a second...

Why do people care so much about games they've never played and never intend to play? As an example, Persona 5 is a game that I have less than zero interest and every video I've ever seen of it leads me to conclude it's a game I'd despise playing. So I haven't played it and don't intend to play it. But I don't critique it either precisely because I haven't played it so I have no basis to critique it.

Yet with TLoU2 so many freaks on this forum and across the internet are frothing at the mouth with obsessive rage and hatred for it, and yet they've never played it and admit they never would play. It's a mixture of sad and pathetic how much energy people expand on hating something they've never played and will never play when they could just ignore it and instead use that energy instead to focus on something they like.

It is because it has become a pawn in their culture war. You look at all these youtubers who are utterly obsessed with it and make about 8 videos a week and it is more about what it represents to them rather than the actual game itself. It is one thing to dislike a game because we all have opinions but they seem offended by it's very existence and it is about than just the game itself. A bit off topic but I love GOT and it deserves than to be used as a pawn in their culture war and many youtubers make videos everyday doing just that.

Good summation.

If TLoU2 is to be taken "literally" as some political/cultural "pawn/weapon/tool" then I have no problems with saying that the game isn't representatives of my own personal beliefs. Having said that, I enjoyed TLoU2 immensely because I'm intellectually mature enough to know that it's a fucking video game so I don't go into it looking for it to valid my real life beliefs. I don't do that with any video game or piece of entertainment. If I did then I'd have a hard time enjoying 99% of the entertainment I consume.

If anyone plays TLoU2 and dislikes it because they think the purpose of the game is to turn it;s players into man hating lesbian transexuals that lift and enjoy anal sex, well then those people need to evaluate the fragility of their political beliefs if they think a video game is capable of that level of "subversion"

The same people who claim to hate snowflakes and say that artists should have the right to make the art they want become very snowflakey when Neil Druckmann makes the art that he wants. The only truly political part of the game is the conflict between the WLF and Seraphites. Gays and muscular women is not political in my book. They are just people who part of life.

Love this take that there's no good faith criticism to bring up against TLOU2 way of story telling. :lollipop_grinning:
Not a single person here said that but there are plenty games that have terrible storytelling that don't attract this kind of vitriol. People just move on and play what they want. I see all these youtubers come on my algorithm and they are utterly obsessed with this game and act like it is some us against them culture war.

I am not leaning towards anything. I happen to like the story quite a bit but I understand why some people don't. That being said the serious vitriol this game has received is in large part fueled by the alt righters who think anything remotely progressive is woke propaganda and it must be stopped or the SJWs win. GTA V had a terrible story and everybody and their mother bought that game and it didn't catch tons of backlash.

^ Pretty much. I feel that the games defenders are so blinded by the veneer of the shiny graphics and animations, that that they can't see the problems of the game in terms of the inadequacy of games systems, coupled with the ludo-narrative dissonance. They basically reskinned the game play of the previous title, but introduced a narrative that just doesn't hold up all that well when the only options open to you are either sneak or kill, when you're ostensibly looking for a certain someone. You can grab innumerable WLF as your murder your way through Seattle, but you're apparently wholly incapable of questioning any of them as to Abby's whereabouts because that sort of information is only available in cut scenes.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was some form of sunk-cost fallacy. They put so much energy and time trying to hype up the game, so much time trying to justify the leaks, that they can't possibly imagine that the game just isn't all that great. Just reading the first page of this thread shows the cult-like nature of their thought process.

I wasn’t being literal about the copy/paste, just a hyperbolic way to say that the game plays almost exactly like the previous one, 7 years later.

I did forget to mention dodge, which was a welcome addition in my opinion. I know people say that it’s unreliable and finicky but I didn’t have a problem with it once I figured out the animation timing.

Man, look at those goalposts run.

How about this: You define exactly what you mean by third-person shooter and I’ll give you a list if I can think of five. You can completely stealth many, if not all, encounters in The Last of Us Part II, so is it really a shooter then? It has shooting, but you don’t have to use it. Is it suddently a stealth game then?

I put more hours into Ground Zeroes than I put into The Phantom Pain and many other games. Don’t tell me it isn’t a full game.

Your primary way of interacting with enemies in Horizon is shooting.

Death Stranding has guns and you can shoot them. It’s also third-person.

Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are both third-person and the primary way to interact with enemies is shooting them.

Days Gone is third-person and the primary interaction with enemies is shooting them.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands, third-person, filled with guns, and you can even customize them.

Hitman 1 and 2 I put on there just to pump the number to 11. I suppose one could make a legitimate argument that they qualify, but I’ll give those to you.

Control is obviously a third-person shooter.

Dead accounts and people who seem to have a vested interest in defending this game. Like Druckmann personally sucked them off or some shit.

I am glad they enjoy the game, but the amount of vitriol and arrogance they show to anyone who shows criticism is just sad. Continued claims of "YoU dIdNt PlAy ThE gAmE!" and accusations of homophobia/transphobia from them.

I love FFXV, but I am not going to go around and insult people because they don't like it. Just as I would expect the same vice versa.

Good point. But what's amazing about this whole situation - it works the same both ways and each side of the discussion seems to be seeing an equally skewed image of the other.

I absolutely love TLOU2, like for real. But that doesn't mean I feel like sitting neogaf, reddit or elsewhere, and argue in its defense.
Likewise, there were some games released recently I was hyped as fuck when announced and totally disappointed by when I eventually got to play them.
But I somehow don't feel the need to run around forums throwing up walls of text explaining why I think Doom Eternal sucked and was a horrible sequel to my no.1 FPS this gen, seeing it's been given almost universal praise. I just think it's a weird way to spend your time.
But I also think this is a discussion forum made for people to discuss videogames and argue and share strong opinions, great, whatever floats your boat.

The only indisputable fact about TLOU2 made clear by reading this forum and elsewhere is that whether this game is "good" or "not good" is a highly subjective experience.

I don't even think it's as nefarious as that. I think TLOU II has been positioned as a pseduo intellectual storyline propped up by diversity politics. It gives you intellectual credibility to pick it as the game of the year because it's so 'deep', 'moving' and 'thematic'. On the other hand, you can also celebrate it's progressiveness and it you contest intellctual dishonesty you get called an -ist or -ic. It's pathetic.

You can appreciate the games VA and artists capabilities without selling your soul. I agree that most (not just this year), already have a GOTY favourite it matters little what comes out. The narrative has been set already, cyberpunk has already been smeared, Ghost of Tsushima has already been labelled the gamergaters choice, FFVII will be ok for 3/4 as a remake. At the moment, animal crossing should be clearing up, it transcended the medium to have a real impact and reflection on the COVID situation, the sales are out of this world, it's had a few big updates and seasonal events but we'll see.

Nah, TLOU2's story isn't pseudo intellectual, its just trying to be its own thing, and not simply pander to fan expectations.

And yes, while there are modish elements of progressivism and diversity, it doesn't grandstand its politics and in actuality is more a critique of excesses perpetrated in the name of personal, subjective moralities. Classical liberalism in short.

I find no fault with either of these things.
