[DF] Horizon Zero Dawn PC: An Amazing Game Gets A Disappointing Port

Game is heavy as f...
1440p@ultra and it stays at 60-75fps (C9 with gsync). For comparison, farcry 5, which have much better graphics, runs at 100-120fps.
8700k + 2070 Super

But one thing this games does great its the HDR. Man, it looks great on the oled. Even though you can't adjust the peak brightness.
Reduce cloud in high for a good boost on fps

Has anyone had issues with ds4windows and the EGS version?

It seem's the two (ds4windows & native game) are conflicting as i can see the button prompts going between Xbox style and PS style.... how can i fix it it?The game supports ds4 natively, which is great but im not used to those prompts. Ive tried changing afew DS4 settings and nothing has fixed it.

Id rather play with the Xbox prompts like 99% of my games..

RX 5700XT and HDR is buggy as hell, sometimes it works sometimes not and if it works only 1440p@60hz if I change to 120hz picture gets washed out. Game runs like shit, stutters all over the place, Sony/Guerrilla messed up this one. Should've focused more on a technical part of the game instead of luring PC players to their upcoming console.

It's been a while since I've used ds4windows but you need to look for something called exclusive mode (or something similar to that) in the settings and enable it.

Just fired it up again to mess with the benchmarks and settings and... this time it feels a lot smoother and I'm not getting any framepacing/stuttering issues? Wtf.

Anyway here are benchmark results on my system at various resolutions/settings:

With all the faffing about I'm now somehow up to 115 mins of playtime already. Not sure if I'll keep it or refund. Will sit on it for a week or so and see if there is a patch forthcoming.

One thing I noticed... I set the frame-limiter to 60 FPS in-game, and my frames never went above 57... and the game felt choppy. Once I disabled the limiter I was back to 60 FPS and the game was smooth again. Like a few others have said... I think this is one of those games that you just have to play at a constant 60 FPS.

So i fixed my crash problem in horizon because i bought borderland 3 who crashed too
I needed to use a pagefile on one of my hdd, i decided long ago to use none with 16gb but apparently those games try to use/access it even if physical memory if not full.
So if you crash and use no pagefile that could help you

This game eats ram for breakfast.

If you have 16gb of ram or less then yeh, you need your page file to be set up correctly.

WTF were Sony thinking? These guys make d3t look good.

Honestly I have no idea but they really shouldn't have outsourced this to a studio that doesn't have the best of track records.

If this is how they want to port any future potential games to PC then they may as well not bother.

As it was with Microsoft when they first started bringing their games to PC again, do it properly or fuck off.

Someone is having problems with lip"desync" in the dialogs?

Even when the game is "perfectly" locked (hud microstuttering aside) at 30 fps it looks like the facial animation is off with the audio.

The game is great but this port is a shitshow.

fucking lol, thank to this shitty port i started a second run on pro and now that i have a 4k tv with hdr the difference with my old 1080p non-hdr oled is pretty staggering...they did a good job with the checkboard technique\hdr here, also this game has probably the most fluid 30 fps from all sony exclusive (with spiderman)

too bad for the fov and the 30 fps, but i'm not gonna pay 50 euros for this shitshow...
I don't know after playing it with the new FOV, 80-100 fps on a superultrawide, 1ms, monitor with keyboard and mouse, I can't go back to the PS4 on 4k tv with horrendous input lag and controller. I hope they patch things up to make it more compatible with other cards because this is the definitive version to play IMO.

Not every tv has shitty input lag but i get it, i'm mostly a pc gamer too.

But this port is trash and i'm not gonna enjoy the game if i have to think on a way to fix the game every 5 minutes.

It's like when they took the scanned IRL face model and than widened her face and chunkified her, they forgot to space her eyes out to compensate, leaving her with a cross eyed/doll's head look. I think the dumb hairstyle, was mostly done to avoid clipping when you equip headbands of course it indirectly makes her forehead look enormous.

Her personality is a bigger issue at least in the beginning maybe it changes as the game progresses, at least right now she's just an annoying mary sue, but at least they give you options to be more compassionate and tolerable instead of an uptight biatch.

it's gotten better for sure, but won't ever get to the level of pc monitors. i was referring mainly to my tv, sony 850F, which has horrible lag, I made the mistake of not checking the input lag specs before I bought it and have regretted it since

the port has been fine for me, being able to play on keyboard and mouse with the new FOV really is the biggest game changer at least IMO

I don't play fast paced multyplayer fps or beat em up so tv input lag is really not a problem, Not even in games where time reaction is everything like sekiro or tsushima.

Your tv has to be pretty horrible if you feel the difference in a game like horizon.

also being able to the get rid of the motion blur also helps with the playability, i'm not sure what to tell you, i don't play too many FPS games but play a ton of fighting games and even a slight difference in input lag is noticeable and affects your play, at least for me anyways

Yeah i used the term beat em up to describe fighting games lol.

I don't play them so no problem for me.

On pc, blur, dof and CA are the first things that i disable, i like a clean IQ.

Gave it a shot, my 2070 does not like 2560x1040 on High. It's smooth until the fighting starts or you enter a populated area, then the drops start. But even on standard 1080 on High, it feels jittery. Cutscenes feel weird, physics go a little nuts, there's flickering shadows, there's framedrops when cutscenes start, sometimes when dialogue starts, etc.

Feels like it's being held together by a spit and a prayer.

HZD used GPGPU procedural for foilage and environment with low level apis and having shared coherent RAM.

Do people think the contractor rewrote this feature or does it just perform badly on a PC set up ?

It immediately grabbed 15gb on my 32gb set-up, then proceeded to set itself it at 720p.

And I can’t seem to skip the cinematic at the beginning. Every fucking time.

That is some serious professional work by devs.

Not only that there's another exclusive feature: GPU work generation. In HZD GPU generates all the smaller procedural objects that it will render later.
Dunno how they ported it but if it transfers over PCIe two times: generated objects to CPU, objects for render after physics/ai to CPU that's twice the load of any typical PC game.
There's no need to do it for unified RAM on console...

Cause it makes the game look worse tbh.

minecraft DLSS is poop
Control DLSS is poop

actually the only game that impressed me with DLSS is death strandong boi
The latest version DLSS (2.0)is a big upgrade and has significant wins over native resolutions. While your statements might have held some truth prior to DLSS 2.0.
to have it(DLSS) in your game is a big win visually and performance-wise.
Death Stranding 4k60 on a 2060RTX.

I'm not a fan of Nvidia but my current video card past 2 cards are Nvidia cards.
I'm also was not a fan of intel when I bought i5 2500k.
But I buy what makes sense for the dollars I put out of course.
DLSS has more value to me than ray tracing at the moment shitty company practices or not.

DLSS is a solution to a problem they created anyway.

I don't think they rewrote that algorithm. That's just a lot of code to do that with. The coherent RAM isn't a problem either since most GPUs on PC have more RAM available than the current gen consoles.

GPGPU for procedural foliage is just a hardware accelerated scattering of geometry instances. The low level API isn't any kind of speedup over Vulkan as it's low-level too.

Bottomline: I don't think there's any specific hardware specific algorithm that isn't done on any other 3rd party development game for PS. All of these games require brute force rendering on the PC side of things.
