Nowhere Prophet dev: "Our opening weekend sales on PS4 were 5% of our Switch opening weekend sales"

Wow, harsh crowd here.

Like I said earlier, it's not my type of game either. Also, there are some valid criticisms, such as better suited to PC or Switch, or releasing too closely to other highly anticipated games that sucked the air out of the room.

Oh yeah, and another good reason was that this was full price on PS4, while Switch and Xbox One had a discounted price for launch. So, obviously anyone with one of those systems would be much more inclined to purchase it there. Can't blame multiplatform customers for wanting to save some money.

But if the developer's comment on Twitter is correct, that Sony ignored their request to offer a similar launch discount, then this particular issue is completely Sony's fault.

Let's not gloss over stuff like this. Maybe PS4 fans should ask Sony why they're not entitled to the same type of discounts that Switch and Xbox One players are enjoying.

I remember when third party devs used to complain that their games did not sell well on Nintendo machines. It's a good thing that Nintendo machines have settled into being the platform for indie games apart from Steam.

Oh no! A mobile game (that looks cool btw) sold less on an indie machine that a high-end console already filled with AAA titles!

Incredible!

Every time I see a game publisher or developer complain about sales on any platform, it's always for a really unremarkable game.

Maybe he must have felt that Nintendo eShop buyers whom are desperately looking for content, are of the same level as ps4 store buyers which are just bombed to death with AAA games for the last 7 years.

I think this has been spun a bit the wrong way. The same dev who wrote that also wrote this

which I suppose is i kind of subtweeting himself for spending a long time making his game and having it not sell too well

Isn't this dev the cuck who likes lecturing people about white privilege?

Someone said something I don't like on twitter? This is the tweet I see

if posting that video makes someone a "cuck" in your mind then I'm going to guess you had a knee jerk reaction and/or didn't watch it because what that dude said was mostly reasonable. and it's social media. if you dont want to see opinions of game devs then dont go trolling their social media feed

Usual snark aside, there is a point here.

Sony did very well to court the indie scene but it has been relinquished. Perhaps on purpose.

The Switch is absolutely the perfect machine to dip in and out of rogue lites and such.

No. It's more like AAA games is the only one worth playing, and PS nurtured that culture nicely by pricing their "outdated" games as low as $10. Indies can get fucked basically.
Well if you saw State of Play I think you'll see Sony is still supporting indie development. But yeah, I think they see more scope in terms of making a profit in medium-sized AA games versus small games like this one (though I haven't actually played it).

They didn't make their market more friendly towards indies when they could at least control them to a certain extent, and watch how Sony fans reacts to these type of games, it's like watching filth. Of course I'm not saying all of them but a big part of the fanbase are just..like that.

Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.

Several of the very best selling PS4 games of all time are literally FIFA. Like, fucking 4 of them.

Embarrassing. Sports games are casual, annualized dogshit.

So clearly your average PS4 owners aren't that discerning.

I’m screen-shotting each and every one of these snooty scrub replies for when bangers like Monster Train and Dicey Dungeons skip the machine and you’re all wondering why.

at first I thought it was some pseudo 8-bits dev ranting as usual that nobody on PlayStation wants their generic Megaman clone

But no, these guys made Descenders, a pretty cool procedural bike downhill game which was out on Xbox forever.

well, I was interested in it forever, specially after there were hints that it would get a VR port. But then it was cancelled and I didn't even care wether it was released on PS4 or not...

in any case, PlayStation is the place for top stuff with big marketing, indies do have a hard time indeed - that's why the switch exists.

lol people really pulling that dumbass "Switch has nothing to play" bullshit here?

Spoken like true casuals who know nothing about the system. Probably the type who only play AAA games.

back during SNES and NES days, all the games that look like indies today were top of line AAA...

“Somebody insulted Nintendo and now I’m really upset”.

I think you’d be less critical of GTA and CoD players if these games were available on Switch, honestly.

What would I buy what looks like a mobile game on a console? Plus I'm sure people are playing GoT and wouldn't bother with this one.

Nintendo haters are annoying and dumb as fuck. Any gamer worth their salt likes Nintendo.

Those games are fine. I like them. But they're casual as fuck and non gamers eat them up cuz they're "badass".

And sports games are fuckin' trash, those are the ones I'm actually hating on.

I mean, maybe maybe it is cause the PS4 has a ton of games to play, and the Switch really doesn't soo *shrugs*

Based on what my Switch buddies are buying I'd say there's also a case of wanting to play these games on a handheld device. I have two friends who own both a PS4 and a Switch and they go for the Switch version even if they're inferior in terms of performance.

Some context is needed. When did it launch on Switch? First 12-18 months on Switch were gangbusters for everyone. That's not impressive. However if it's a more recent release, then yes I agree that's impressive.

Timing is everything? Also, no clue which game this is and how this game should be on anyone's radar.

Psn store sales are better and more frequent that the others, and specially much better than the switch one.

Just looked the game up, it doesn't even look good. The sales aren't because of the PS4.

Seriously contrast tht to games like Journey ps3/ps4 , Hotline Miami tht sell good on any console because thy are just that good. Shit Bloodstained isn't a super power house AAA game but we all knew it would be a beautful, fun game and I got it on PS4 no hesitation.

Didn't even know this game existed.

I've never heard of it. But yeah, I think there's definitely something to the idea that Switch-only owners have less top tier games to play in general and are therefore more inclined to buy stuff like this. If you have a PS4 you have no shortage of great games to play, so something like this might not get much attention.

(For the record, I own both consoles.)

Yes... Hotline Miami is certainly a graphical powerhouse.

Yeah, it's Sony's fault and not the fact the Nintendo Store has less games than the Playstation Store to compete with an indie title.

Also, the market is not saturated at all with deck-building card games.

That might be true as a general rule, but in the case of this particular game, the PS4 version didn't get the discount that the Switch and Xbox One versions had. (All three versions were released on the same day) The developer wanted a discount, but Sony told them they were "too busy" to apply it.

As a result, they got about 20 times more sales on Switch than on PS4. Even the Xbox One version outsold the PS4 version, despite this game being offered for "free" to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Let that sink in: Even without considering Xbox Game Pass downloads, they still racked up more paid purchases on Xbox One than on PS4.

Instead of PS4 fans mocking the game or handwaving this issue, consider the negative implications:

  • From the developer's perspective, if Sony can't even make time to accommodate their request for a discount, then that's a company that's not worth bothering with. They have already stated they might not bother bringing their future games to PS4. See what they said about the situation on Twitter:
  • From the PS4 fans' perspective, you should also be angry at Sony for ignoring this request. How many other developers' requests are they also ignoring? Are we missing out on other discounts? Why should PS4 owners be treated like second-class citizens here?
