[DF] Horizon Zero Dawn PC: An Amazing Game Gets A Disappointing Port

What do you mean "resized to 21:9"?

I’m gaming on an LG C9 - which is a 4K 16:9 display, obviously. If you want to game in 21:9 then in the Nvidia Control Panel you can re-size your display to 21:9 by lowering the Height all the way down.

Essentially, you’re re-sizing your display to 3840x1620, which is 21:9.

How is this different than a custom resolution? Because doing this, for some unknown reason, doesn’t disable HDR. A custom 21:9 resolution will disable HDR.

Maybe there are issues with certain configs, but man, it is beautiful on my setup. I am so happy. So silky smooth. This is how I wished it would play when I played through on PS4.
Yeah definitely. For comparison, I fired up the PS4 Pro version and switched between it and the PC version on my TV. PS4 is janky as fuck lol.

Only thing I need is to get the HDR of the PC version up to par with the PS4 version which has far superior colors on the same TV.

Windows 10 HDR still sucks.

Did some quick benchmarks as the night got away from me. Not terribly impressed with the performance but it is what it is until a patch. Gonna try it tomorrow on my other systems and see how they all compare.

I've been skipping through a twitch streamer's playthrough (cohhcarnage) to refresh my memory of the story to maybe get back into it. He seems to be happy enough playing at 1080p/60 with ultra settings.

But what I'm definitely seeing is that the lip syncing is way off when running it at 60fps. It's like the facial animations or lip syncing specifically are coded specifically to 30fps or something. It looks very odd.

I have to say i'm not that impressed with the graphics so far, after all the hype. Never played it on PS4, and i'm playing on 'High', which is supposed to be higher settings than PS4. I dont think its totally the games fault though as i think have the options dont even work to be honest. Its really not a good port. I think Assassins Creed Odyssey on PC maxed out, which i just did a second playthrough recently, looks better.

Well most of the npc's faces and facial animations are off to begin with, other than some excessive ragdolling i'm not seeing much problems at 130fps with high graphics and 80-100 with ultra at 3840:1080, i have a freesync/gsync monitor with vsync and motion blur off and it looks and plays incredibly smooth

8 years old CPU and 5 years old GPU with 6gb vram =4k 38 fps at original preset. Absolutely normal performance for my rig. The only real problem is the suddenly freezes while interface appears.

Anyone got a PC save file for the game? Need it just as the proving quest starts - or heck, even a little after I don't mind.

Somehow the game on PC looks outdated. Maybe it is the missing hdr or something. It looked much better on PS4. Less colorful and lifeless. I really don't know, but I would prefer the PS4 version.

I'm installing this to see how it runs on my R5 3600, 16gb ram but with a crappy rx470.

Let's see how this goes

There have been matriarchal societies but they've always been very uncommon. But it worked fine in the H:ZD story since it fits the Mother Gaia concept. What I found ridiculous was that there were so many ethnically diverse characters part of the same, very small tribe. I'd expect to see tribes with only ethnically mixed people instead of clearly white, Asian and black characters.
Well some anthropologists claim this is actualy false and there has never been a true matriarchal society, but nevertheless the fact it's even in the game proves it's wokeness as feminists just love talking about matriarchal societies, that's like every female tumbler's wet dream to have a matriarchal society. Yes, I also thought a community of 100 having every nationality known to man was a pretty WTF moment, but I was curious if this was going to be explained further in the story or if it was going to be like Zion in the Matrix where everyone was intentionally mixed race.

Maybe they should add "plays best on PS4 pro, considering all the hassle & frustration of not getting 4k60 ultra on your $3000+ rig"

This is how the game runs on a 750ti card:

Remember how the base PS4 GPU matches the 750 ti and would perform similarly? Remember those older benchmarks? Well, look how badly that game runs on that card now. And that's on a CPU that wipes the floor with the PS4 one.

Does this show how bad of a port this is or not?

This also got me thinking... If the PS5 is a match for a RTX 2070 Super then could that card run as bad with later PS5 games?

750ti was a low end GPU with ~1.4TF, "exotic" architecture (mix of Kepler and Maxwell) that Nv no longer gives a fuck about and cut down things like ROP's memory BW etc.

Plus it's OBVIOUS that game that EATS above 7GB of VRAM in 2560x1080 (my case) can't run well on 2GB GPU...

2070 will compete much better.

The point was to show that the 750ti usually performed on par with PS4 but this is how it's performing in HZD, the port is a bit pants.

Port is trash what do people expect really. They spend zero effort in actually testing this shit and just pushed it out. The fact u need 1060gtx just for 30 fps at 1080p is laughable with still microstutters everywhere.

I guess "they" underestimated how shite of a job GG would do haha

Yup. We all know that any console game should be playable at 4K@60+ fps on PC!
Right out of the box! Software doesn't matter, hardware interfaces don't matter at all, what matters is how much TF is the GPU and the clock of a CPU!!!
Everything else doesn't need any work, and never impacts performance!!!

You are enjoying this little to much, it's just a bad port. :messenger_grinning:

Guerilla obviously didn't put enough effort at porting, maybe they even didn't port it.

Best option is to have all platforms (ok, we can live without Xbox lol), even if port sucks, you just play it on console and everyone's happy. Better 30fps than 144fps with constant stutter or whatever.

What "bad port" means here?
Maybe it means: "without special tweaking and performance optimization for DX12 console games will not work at 4K@60"?
Unless they were initially made multiplatform (worse perf, but more flexible).

You really have to be Sherlock here. Bad port, you can really see it all over the internet. Game has problems with stutters/frame drops among other things. Which could've been avoided (like the UI thing).

And yes, developers have to put some effort in optimizing their game (surprise).

There's no 'maybe' - GG did crappy job on PC side and that's it. There's no excuses for problems on PC with RTX 2080TI.

Just played about an hour, the game feels off. Can't tell whether it's the frame pacing or input lag but it doesn't matter what I mess around with (4k @ 30fps or 1440p @ 60fps, vsync on or vsync off, framerate limiter or not), it still has that same feeling like I'm moving through sludge like a drunk person.

Probably going to refund before I hit 2 hours. Shame really. GG should have taken this on themselves instead of outsourcing it to an incompetent studio.

Brings back Killzone 2 memories.

Don't get me wrong KZ2 was great, but input lag was horrendous.

They must have played / test it before release. I guess it's up to their standard. Shame.

Nah I don't think it is hence that massive disclaimer they sent out with pre-release copies.

Nice try though.

Honestly I'm gonna boot up the console version later on the Pro to see how it feels in comparison. I don't remember it feeling like this, even at 30fps, need to see if it's just my memory is deceiving me.

Does anyone use RTSS with on-screen frame time and frame rate graphs? I've recently discovered this feature and it's totally invaluable for me now trying to eliminate judder. Not every game is perfect of course but if you can find the sweet spot in resolution and graphics settings with a real-time graph then you're on your way.

IMHO, RTSS is the only reliable telemetry tool in PC space.
Made by people who understand performance.

Thats strange, i have a PC very similar to yours, the differences are that i have 16gb of ram and a i7 6700k but the resolution and gpu are the same and i got 69 fps in benchmark ultimate settings, i will post a print screen later

fucking lol, thank to this shitty port i started a second run on pro and now that i have a 4k tv with hdr the difference with my old 1080p non-hdr oled is pretty staggering...they did a good job with the checkboard technique\hdr here, also this game has probably the most fluid 30 fps from all sony exclusive (with spiderman)

too bad for the fov and the 30 fps, but i'm not gonna pay 50 euros for this shitshow...

Are you running in Window-Borderless mode? My HDR works and the colors are extremely crisp and sharp.

of course it doesnt look better on ps4. It looks outdated because it is. It was never this graphical milestone the sony fans made it out at the time. And now everyone can see as a game is as mediocre as it gets. The metacritic score this game got is because it was a sony exclusive. Its a 6/10 game.

Runs at 50fps in 1080p with everything on high with a R5 3600 and a rx470. If I had a more recent video card I'd be able to play this in higher resolution. Weird to see so many people getting problems

I never understood the hype for this game neither. Always some cherry picked photo or GIF.

Game is heavy as f...
1440p@ultra and it stays at 60-75fps (C9 with gsync). For comparison, farcry 5, which have much better graphics, runs at 100-120fps.
8700k + 2070 Super

But one thing this games does great its the HDR. Man, it looks great on the oled. Even though you can't adjust the peak brightness.
