The story is set in the 31st century, in a world where humans live in scattered tribal-like populations with limited access to technology. Their technologically advanced predecessors are remembered as the "Old Ones". Large robotic creatures, known as "machines", dominate the Earth. For the most part, they peacefully coexist with humans, who occasionally hunt them for parts. However, a phenomenon known as the "Derangement" has caused machines to become more aggressive towards humans, and larger and deadlier machines have begun to appear. There are three tribes that are prominently featured: the Nora, the Carja, and the Oseram. The Nora are fierce hunter-gatherers who live in the mountains and worship nature as the "All-Mother". The Carja are desert-dwelling city builders who worship the Sun. The Oseram are tinkerers known for their metalworking, brewing, and arguing.

Aloy was cast out from the Nora tribe at birth and raised by an outcast named Rost. As a child, she obtained a Focus, a small augmented reality device that gives her special perceptive abilities. After coming of age, Aloy enters a competition called the Proving to win the right to become a Nora Brave, and by extension, a member of the Nora tribe. Aloy wins the competition, but the Nora are attacked by a strange group of cultists. Aloy is almost killed by their leader, Helis, but is saved by Rost, who sacrifices himself to save her. Having lost her adoptive father and seen her village almost destroyed, Aloy embarks on a journey across her ravaged homeland.

Horizon Zero Dawn is an action role-playing game played from a third-person view.Players take control of Aloy, a hunter who ventures through a post-apocalyptic land ruled by robotic creatures. Aloy can kill enemies in a variety of ways – setting traps such as tripwires using the Tripcaster, shooting them with arrows,using explosives, and a spear. Machine components, including electricity and the metal they are composed of, are vital to Aloy's survival; she can loot their remains for crafting resources.

Ammo, resource satchels, pouches, quivers, resistance, antidotes, health potions, and traps can all be crafted. Weapons have modification slots for dealing more damage. Aloy wears a Focus, a small head piece that scans machines to determine their susceptibilities, identify their location, their level, and the nature of loot they will drop. One machine, the Stalker, can enable cloaking technology to avert the gaze of Aloy's Focus scan. Machines attack with defensive and offensive measures, and in either case react to a perceived threat by charging at it with brute force or projectiles. Exhibiting the behaviour of wild animals, some machines are inclined to move in herds, and others, with the ability to fly, do so in flocks. Unless hacked with the Override Tool, or sufficiently hit with corruption arrows, machines do not exert aggressive force against each other.Aloy also engages in battle with human enemies, such as bandits and the Eclipse cult.

Can't wait! Will probably start it tomorrow and play for a bit and then shelve it until GG fixes most of the issues. Still one of my favorite playstation 1st party games, am excited to be able to play an improved version of a game I already loved.

Here's a quick port report of the launch version from me. 8700K is OC-ed to 4.8GHz on all cores and I'm using 3600MHz Samsung B-Die CL17 RAM. Strangely enough, the game does not show Windows version, but I'm using W10 Pro without the May update or any updates after that.



The game is VERY RAM / VRAM hungry. I saw RAM usage up to 20 GB+ and VRAM up to 9.8 GB. Also, don't look at the MIN FPS, it's not accurate, I haven't seen FPS that low during my half an hour testing. GPU / CPU FPS is 100% accurate though.

I haven't heard anything specifically. With that said I'm playing on a 27" 1440p 144hz monitor, with a 2070super, I have the fov at max, g-sync, all settings to ultra except shadows and clouds I put st high, and I've been steady between 60-70fps.

I'm genuinely not seeing anything that makes this a terrible port but your results could vary depending on your hardware.

I have hundreds of hours in HZD and the DLC on playstation, it looks much sharper on PC than on console. The increase in fov and stable 60fps really make this feel like a fresh game.

Amazing OT. Shame Shinobi get banned long time ago. I would recommend people check out the Frozen Wild DLc and the official manual because is amazing as well.

Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16gb (8x2)

I'm not a tech wizard, or one to zoom in 800% on a scene to dissect a pixel and find flaws. But again I'm about to do the proving ground section and with the settings I'm using it hasn't dipped below 60fps. I wish I could get it up to 120fps like Destiny 2 but HZD seems perfectly fine at 60fps.

I'm still gonna probably do this part and then wait a couple days to see if they release a hot fix for minor under the hood issues.

dd you activated the anisotropic filter from nvidia panel? the ingame settins is busted.

performance in this game are all over the fucking places, i readed at least 20 dudes with diferent performance in similar hardware between here, reeee and reddit and i'm usually unlucky with broken games on pc...

HZD is a very pretty game. We are finally able to see it at full resolution and with some sprinkled on 3D rendering features that give it that extra ommph. I wish it was steady at 60FPS but I'm happy with a locked 30FPS @ 4k.

That's... actually not that bad?
I don't know about the stutter, bugs, etc... but 77fps at 1440p High/Ultra seems to be acceptable for a 1080Ti.
For comparison, RDR2 runs noticeably worse (65fps average) at 1440p high settings on a 1080Ti. (source)

I didn't, honestly I just messed with the in game settings a bit and played as much as I could before work. Gonna keep posted on other people's results throughout the day and see what I need to tweak.

This is a misconception a lot of console players make. Saying "I played it in 4k @ 30fps" means very little when comparing to PC. Consoles typically have a narrow fov so it doesn't have to render as much at once, plus they typically use lower quality assets to keep a more stable performance.

On PC these options are available to tweak at will and usually greatly enhance the game. I can't play games with narrow fov anymore, it's nauseating.

I'm not a console player. I have a 2080ti. I screenshot posted my benchmark results in the DF thread. I'm disappointed that with a current top line GPU I have to choose to play the game either at PS4 graphic settings or PS4 frame rate.

Do note that I haven't tested the actual game yet with various FOV options. I'll do that tomorrow.

Steam reviews are not good, some people do have crashes after 5 or so min of gameplay at the very beginning so I'm not holding my breath.

Ok so you basically have the same PC I have so this gives me hope. I also have a 1440p 144/165hz monitor but I have 32GB of ram so if the game is ram hungry that should help. I bought the game last month so I will fire it up tonight and give it a shot.

I got to the part where you fight the sawtooth, right when it dies cause of the trip caster traps I had set it dropped from 65fps to 50fps for a couple seconds. I assume cause everything that was happening hammered the game for a moment. That's the only time it dropped on me.

Having to head to work but I'm gonna keep up with everyone's impressions and see if maybe there's a setting or two I can tweak to get a bit more performance out of it.

16GB Ram, i7-6700K Cpu and Nvidia 1080.
Was disappointing at 40 and below, quick restart to update nvidia drivers and applying Digital Foundry's optimized settings gave me a reasonably stable 60 at 1440p.
My CPU is ageing, but I feel like it should have performed better after Death Stranding's celebrated PC port.

The shader caching is fuckin' muuuuurdering me. So I'll give it a rest and see if they can fix it with patches.

RAM usage on my rig is way above 15 GB alone and after launching the game again, VRAM usage hiked to 10600 MB. I think this game has really serious VRAM and RAM utilization issues, maybe even RAM / VRAM leak cuz neither AC Origins or AC Odussey using this much VRAM and these two are very, very good looking games.

Also, the game crashed after 5-7 min of real gameplay so... yeah, I guess I won't be playing the game untill the first patch at least. Also, performance in game and during cutscenes is not very good and chopy.

Lock to 30FPS and you should be good to go as far as choppiness.

I have a 3600 paired with a 480, can i run it a 60fps medium settings 1080p?

Really dont want to waste money on a game if it will run better on my pro.

Absolutely not gonna happen. I've 1440p 144Hz monitor and G-Sync only works above 48 FPS.

Do not use in game V-Sync, force it through GPU's control panel and turn it off in Display settings menu in game.

Is the benchmark anything to go by? - because I ran it at High settings and it was super smooth at 4K. Zero frame-time issues in the benchmark.

RTX 2080 Ti - LG C9 - 9900K

I played for about one minute as Alloy when she was young. Again, super smooth. Is it all going to go to hell in the open world?

I have to go to work now. I can’t wait to try this game out later tonight. Fingers crossed.

I have a few systems I will try it on tonight/tomorrow. Mix of 1440p/165hz Gsync, 1440 Ultra wide, 1080p/120, 4K 60. Intel/Amd but all Nvidia cards.

I listened to ACGs update today and he said there are people with a range of systems getting inconsistencies. I’m curious to see how my range of systems perform. From what it sounds, FOV may be the big culprit.

Can anyone stop Sony? They put out hit after hit (to the frametime graph). PCMR crowd all gonna run out and buy a PS5 when it comes out for a taste of the sequel.

In-game V-Sync does not work properly yet and it'll introduce stutters and frame time spikes.

I played it at 30fps 4k on my PS4 Pro 2 years ago.

In 1920x2160, not 4K and medium settings.

Some gameplay:

-Locked to 60FPS in NVCP
-Vsync forced to off in NVCP
-16x AF (as standard)



It's fine if you have VRR monitor (like me) but yeah, this game needs some serious performance updates.

This port is fantastic. Don’t let the nay sayers sway you. I am getting no stuttering, or frame pacing issues at all. I have intel 9900k and a crappy GTX 1080. I am playing on ultra @1080p, I have not seen the frames dip below 60 even during heavy sequences. I am playing full screen, no Vsync on a LG C9. I also have the game on PS4 pro, but this version is better in every single way.

It's far from fantastic, it's medicore at best. Bugs, stuttering (it's there maybe you don't see it), performance drops in stange places.

First impressions so far.

1) At least at the very beginning the world exploration and traversal looks a bit too limited for my taste. There's only certain places you can climb, grab on to and I wish the game was more like AC Origins / BOTW where you can climb absolutely anything. Also, so far at least there's no incentive to explore the environment by going off the beaten path cuz more often than not, you won't anything interesting and hidden there for you to find like chest with loot, gear or something like that. Maybe it'll change later on, we'll see.

2) Setting is awesome and reminds me of Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3 mixed with hi-tech and sci-fi stuff. Gameplay-wise the game also reminds me of The Witcher 3 and recent Tomb Raider games when it comes to bow combat. Each dino robot has it's own weekness which you can exploit and use during combat, not to mention that you can target different parts to gather recources from them. Stealth works perfectly if a bit simplistic for now, but I'm sure it'll get better later on when I'll get more skills and abilities. There's a ton of stuff you can craft to use in combat just like in The Witcher games. I like how you can just grab healing plants and use them immediately without crafting anything.

3) Aloy is great as a main character, I like her personality a lot and the way she reacts to different things and events, but I'm not sure how a feel about different decisions you can make during conversations or cutscenes, cuz idk if it'll matter later on and will it have impact on Aloy as a character and world around her or not. We'll see. But I like that there's different options.

4) Ooooh boy, facial animations is really not very good and it's not just the fact that they're locked at 30 FPS. Sometimes it looks okay or just acceptable, but most of the time really bad. Even Tomb Raider 2013 had better facial animations and if you'll compare them with what Detroit has... Dang, I sure hope that Guerilla will improve facial animations dramatically for Horizon: Forbidden Werst cuz what Zero Down has is just... well, quite frankly embarrassing for a game of this calliber, it really is.

5) Visually the game looks amazing even if not all GFX setting maxed out, plus all the hi-tech and sci-fi stuff and visuals makes it x10 times better. I just love what artist and designers did for this game, it's very unique visually and style-wise.

6) Performance is... well, not consistent will be the best way to put it. Like, for example, yesterday the game didn't run very good, was chopy and I could clearly see frame time spikes here and there, but today it feels more smooth to play (go figure). Also, sometimes I see some weird flashing frames like as if previous frame appeared in the screen as a still image and then quickly dissapeared, idk how else to discribe it. It happes qite often and Idk what may cause this. Other that than I haven't seen any GFX glitches so far, but the game crashed 2 times in tutorial area and it crashes everytime I'm trying to quit the game from the main menu.

Errors, crashes, crap... that's Horizon for PC.

Asked for refund on Steam but they won't give it because the game was purchased on preorder july 6th, more then 2 weeks ago. F**K Sony and F**K Steam with this crap.

I'm playing at 1080p 60fps, so far its been fairly consistent and only a few frame drops, only 1 crash in 4 hours of play so not experiencing what others are yet, my specs:

  • Ryzen 2600
  • GTX 1060 6gb
  • 16gb RAM
  • m2 SSD

I have knocked a few setting down such as the cloud details as that got me a big fps increase alone
