PS5 Sales Expected to ‘Significantly Outperform’ Xbox Series X, Says DFC Intelligence

In recent months it has become clear that Sony and Microsoft are pursuing two very different strategies in the video game industry. The likely result is that the upcoming Sony PlayStation 5 should significantly outsell the Microsoft Xbox Series X. However, Microsoft may have the long-term winning battle plan.

The latest DFC Intelligence video game console forecasts have the PlayStation 5 outselling the Xbox Series X by a margin of 2-to-1. The PS5 looks likely to be Sony’s fourth 100 million unit selling console game system.

Microsoft is trying its best with Xbox Series X, but the past few months have revealed they are just too far behind Sony. Consumer brand preference is strongly towards PlayStation. As a piece of hardware there is nothing Xbox Series X is doing to change that perception.

Sony is also a global powerhouse in video games. Microsoft is only strong in English speaking markets. The Xbox has no presence in Japan and is weak in most of Europe. Sony’s strength in global consumer electronics distribution has been too much for Microsoft to overcome, even after 20 years of concerted effort.

They have been wrong before.
shots fired !
I don't know, but if this is ONLY referencing consoles? I think this is wrong. Needs to be even 3-4x the amount of PS5 vs. XSEX. If, this is really just focussing on sold physical console units..!!?
I mean, after the last weeks information's handed to consumers...I don't know man, especially, people that are actually owning a PC... why would you even bother buying a XSEX?

We know this PS5 gonna do 100 plus mill wile Xbox between 50-60 mill which is fine they both make money but Hardware sales revenue is way lower than digital and services revenue.

Microsoft also knew this, that’s why they tried to go in another direction because they can’t compete in the console market.
and in the way doing scorched earth with gamepass, the only question its how much money they want to lost in the process and how many time they can sustain that level of losses to stay on the race

Another article that can be summed up as:

'Playstation is obviously the bigger, more popular and far more successful gaming brand, but here is a convoluted reason why, actually, it's Xbox that is secretly better, because *insert whatever new scheme Xbox has, that's not just making better games, here*.'

Can't see it going any other way unless Uncle Phil is only charging 300 bucks for the Series X...which ain't happening!

Well Microsoft's plans for Xbox is not to sell to "gamers" they're concern is reaching the casual gamers on mobile phones. The hardcore gamers are used to evangelize the brand to the wider market.

Microsoft, and Sony, ultimately want to capture that mobile market. Microsoft is making the first move toward it with Xbox. Very smart on their part, they needed to be first. They're hoping to get a foothold on that demographic, so by the time Sony comes in with Playstation it won't matter how much more "brand recognition" PS has it will be too late to pull them away from Xbox.

My only question is, does the casual mobile gamer want/crave these "hardcore" style games? Or are they perfectly happy with the mobile experiences they're getting right now. It should be very interesting to see how things play out.

Damnnnn can't see that big of a gap myself, do you think Xbox will only see 10 million or PS5 will sell 500million?

"Microsoft’s senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi has stated that given the broad multimedia focus of Xbox One, there’s no reason why it can’t shift between 400 million and 1 billion consoles in its lifetime. He said the company is also angling for 100 million Xbox 360 console sales in the next five years."

If MS console business was in that bad a shape they could always just buy Sony.

MS has enough cash to buy the entire Sony company and still have 40 billion left last I looked.

Until the courts stop them.

Monopoly laws and all that.

Nvidia's monopoly in the PC market is frankly disgusting. I don't want that kind of stuff in the console space. I want Xbox to retaliate hard tbh. But their whole gamepass shovel ware strategy is not the way to go. It will take time, but winning people over with good exclusives is the only right way forward.

Well, it's 2 to 1 now, so they're just saying that will continue into next gen. That's a pretty safe bet.

Do you think the 2:1 will continue next gen?

I think MS has made great strides in bolstering their studios, improving GamePass, and I get the feeling that a $299 (or less) Lockhart's going to be more impactful than people realize.

NeoGAF is giving me strong Vita / Wii vibes (way off) for XBox right now.

Microsoft are pushing an SaaS future, but those who think an 'all you can eat' buffet future is more attractive have clearly never had food poisoning. Given their poor exclusives since their (admittedly glorious) 360 days, I'm glad Sony will be offering an 'a la carte' menu, at least for the foreseeable future.

No, I don't care that I might have to pay a bit more, I'm sufficiently back logged enough to get most AAA's for 50%+ off anyway. I'm not even anti MS in general, otherwise, but their current offerings just aren't attractive to me, gaming wise.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
WAAAAYYYY too early to know that IMO.

Remember that PS3 sales expectation? Lol

They were basically backwards for like 4 years before analysis was finally like....

Ok maybe Nintendo is onto something and Sony will underperform.

You are right MS wouldn't buy Sony as overall it's not a good business.

I think gamers are better off for the competition between the rivals and prefer they both continue to have a healthy gaming business.
Yep. MS plans don't involve PlayStation... Those comparisons don't make sense anymore... Sony plans and approach is wya different to MS.

This doesn't really matter. It only matters to someone who wants to brag.

The series X will do very well but prob not as good as ps5 in sales numbers depending on pricing.

But even with apple currently out of the picture any compatible android device can be used to jump in. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Especially if tik tok is purchased.

They could open people's eyes to xcloud that may not have been interested before in either playstation or xbox related stuff.

I think Microsoft would be happy to be outsold 2-1 right now, look at how much more engagement PS5 is getting in the media.

How would Microsoft purchasing Sony be a monopoly?

How would Microsoft purchasing Sony be a monopoly?

In the console gaming industry they would be plus I'm sure there are anti competition laws that stop that from happening.

Also there's this.

They really couldn't, the Japanese government would never allow it.

People saying this are just fantasizing the elimination of a competitor through a hostile takeover.

A rather sad attitude imo

Not yours, Microsoft’s.

They can compete they showed glimpses of it during the 360. Xbox’s biggest problem is Microsoft itself at times.

A brand with tons of potential not being met but this group running the division are liked by many core fans it seems so my opinion is a fart in the wind really when it comes to wanting change.
