Awesome. Sums Playstation up really. A global brand with huge pulling power. No wonder we're hearing so many rumors about 3rd party deals with the PS5. There is no other platform that could bring 3rd party this kind of success. I expect the same to happen with FF16. I would go as far as saying FF16 should be fully exclusive to Playstation.

- Full year exclusivity on one platform
- Released when majority of the world under lockdown
- Discounted at summer sale

It will be weird, if this is not the highest one selling OP

Isn't playstation always the most popular one for high profile Japanese games (cause Sony fanboi always tell me this when they defend Sony's exclusivity deals) so another platform is no matter at all if they get the game day one / late / no at all.
discount just came this week and that one platform with several big games, not a starving one.
For big JRPG AAA titles in 2020? no AFAIK FFVIIR is the only one beside NiOh 2
SE is doing good with this partnership with Sony.
Well ~shrug~ that depends on you view point, I as a PC primary (also have ps4 and switch though) personally stopping to care for all this exclusivity things as I already made a new year resolute that will make my buying decision for all third party excusivity consoles games one year after release because the majority of the deal not as transparent as VIIR's one. So I never know what kind of the deal (timed/full) and when the deal expired and I hate to buy the same games twice so... yeah

This is fantastic news. It's an incredible game, which as a longtime fan of FF7 I wasn't confident I'd be able to say.

It also goes to show that all the concern trolling about the game being split up, about it just being called FF7 Remake, was just that.

It'll be interesting to see how a sequel fares. Not only is the ending controversial, but presumably this has at least a chance of being next-gen only, depending how long it takes for it to be made. Its one thing assuming 5m units when the console you release it on has 112m console sales, it's another entirely when it has 20 per cent of that.

I'm not convinced this is a great advert for timed exclusivity. It sold very well, better than it would have done on Xbox or PC alone, but not enough to justify cutting it off from those platforms. In the first instance, you could have added 40-60 per cent more sales - another 2-3 million odd. In the long term, especially on PC, you'd have had the long tail of sales and I guess Gamepass as well.

But, inevitably, it'll be released amid a bunch of next-gen games in 6 months time, will look dated before its time because of hidden loading screens, will sell fewer copies than it would have done. That'll be used to justify releasing on PlayStation only and the dance goes on. We've seen it all before.

Wait.......

You upset FFVII sold well on PS4 cause you rather not buy Playstation hardware at all to game on your PC and hate the waiting?

Been telling you bois about them "neutrals"..... and we gonna be showered by more of them come the PS5. No choice but to bite the bullet..... ohh and exclusives work.

hopefully they can reign the story in. first part ended way more complicated than they needed to. also needs to be way less linear. can't believe how many tunnels we got in first part. FFXV, although too open and big, was really refreshing compared to XIII. hen they went right back to hallways in vii remake 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ morons. tons and tons of other really small issues and weird decisions

but i definitely got my moneys worth though. its a good game.

Nioh 2 a jrpg?
Anything they can do to downplay things they dislike....

Nioh 2 a niche title "that they will play on PC" sold 1 million copies last time that Koei talked about (and for a Koei game that's amazing)..... TLU2 the "most hated game of this year" sold a shit ton, Ghost of Tsushima the "Assassin's Creed/Batman offensive game" is a smashing success, FFVII remake the "I will wait the exclusivity end too" is also a success..... Persona 5 Royal, the "were is my Switch version!!!1!" achieved record sales according to Sega....

Damn! Being a Playstation hater must suck.

I'm not going to defend anyone who says that stuff, but you know how many PlayStations there are in the world, right?

It's perfectly possible that there are millions of people boycotting these games (there aren't, but there could be). It's just that millions are buying them as well.

Success of a game doesn't justify anything but that people are buying it.

tbf Midgar is a compressed industrial city, I don't think "open world" was possible for part 1, at least that aspect is true to the original. Part 2 will definitely need to change that, I don't see how they can do it any other way but "open world".

I blame Ken Kutaragi and the PS3. All of this came as a result of the big fuck up that was the PS3 which led to that 150M+ PS2 userbase being splintered instead of naturally growing with the PS3... As a result millions got hooked into Xbox and Steam etc....other ecosystems. Now they refuse to bow to the King by sticking to their own little islands and complain about the King rightful return to the top. Everyone thought Sony was down and out after that failure - a joke. Now we're on the verge of a bloodbath with the PS5. The sense of defeat is setting in - but it's not their fault that they feel this way. Kutaragi is to blame.

Happy they saw some success. They clearly put some work into this.

I didn't personally like it in the end, though. Comparing it to the Hobbit movie series was pretty apt. The way they stretched the early plot so thin and then made certain changes to not have to be beholden to the plot in the future was a big turnoff. There were just too many instances where I was bored or annoyed in between the ones where I was having a good time.

Bloody hell, I didn’t like the game much, thanks to its lazy storytelling (magic destiny dementors!) and awkward pacing... but congrats to Squeenix for selling so many. Five million digital sales is great. No wonder Sony are putting out a DE of the Ps5...

Thirsted over for yrs, constant every day coverage, blah blah blah and all it sold was 5 million? I dont know to me thats not really special, more predictable. Once it hit other platforms it will rise a little but meh.

When someone go to a thread that talks about the success of something just to throw some shade.... They are buthurt.

We've seen this so much: "Exclusives don't count, I will wait the PC version, there are 100 millions of PS4 so this game selling 1 million is a failure, it only sold well because of the marketing" - There is always a Debbie Downer...

I don't really understand why do you want to downplay the results. SE fiscal report told they did great and FFVII sales were a significative part of it.

There was Persona 5 Royal too.

Anyway, do you want an advice? If you are a pc guy, just stick with it and be happy. Soon or later there is always a chance to have the game you want to play.

FFVII was announced as first on PS4 and before launch it was announced as a year of exclusivity. You can't be more transparent than that.

It probably would have sold a lot even if it was absolute trash. Luckily this turned out to be the best Final Fantasy since X.

Only? FFXV only sold around 9M with Xbox/PC and numerous sales

Edit: That's nearly 4 years out as well (November 29, 2016)

5 million is great for one platform.
Couldve been 10 million if they released it for Xbox.

Nah. I highly doubt that for the obvious reasons, especially based on mega-popular games like FF15 and MGS5 with a sales ratio of 80% PS4 and 20% XBOX when they first came out. I think it would of been a miracle if it even hit 1 million on XBOX. Getting it on Gamepass would of probably been very expensive for Microsoft or very difficult or both.

Proof that signing a timed exclusivity deal with Playstation is good for you. First you get that sweet upfront Sony money from the deal, then you sell a lot of copies in a crowded platform, finally you release the game on other platforms and the success and visibility achieved during your Playstation exclusivity months grants you a whole new sales push from people waiting to see by themseleves what's all the fuzz about.

Isn't that what FF15 sold in the first 24 hours?
Even if it wasn't a multiplatform i expected more from this game, maybe thats just the rose tinted glasses when thinking about FF7
edit.
That said i hope they release part 2 for the PS4 i don't want to be forced to buy a PS5 just for this game (and Sqaure's new project that they announced that looks interesting)
