Trump signs executive order banning transactions with Tencent

Wouldn't this be kind of good for Tencent? They are going to get tons of money from selling their shares. Their ROI on Epic would be massive

I don't think he has the legal authority to do that, not that the law has ever stopped him before.
Sure is a shame that both parties have ceded incresingly more and more power to the Executive Branch over the past 30 years.

Trump could literally spit in an Americans mouth and they’d still lick his boots.

The only reason Trump wants to ban Tik Tok is because people used it to troll him into setting up a massive rally that barely anyone attended. He wants revenge and this is It.

He’s not doing it for you over privacy or data concerns. If he did then you’re own government wouldn’t be spying on you either.

Whew, I was looking at what they invested in and was afraid we'd lose things like Path of Exile, Diablo, Epic Games, etc.

Didn’t they already clarify that it’s only affecting transactions Involving wechat but won’t affect epic/riot deals with Tencent?

If they wanted to sell then they could, so no, I would think being forced to sell when you don’t want to is a bad thing.

its similar to when Donald Sterling was forced to sell the Clippers. Yes, he got $2 billion, but he didn’t want to sell.

Valid point, but that's the problem. There needs to be manufacturing over here and elsewhere around the world. Maybe it's triple+++ the cost but we would pay it knowing we're not giving money to China. The more the OPs mentality is accepted the closer we can get to a more just reality.
AFAIK chips are mostly made in Taiwan, China is mostly an assembly location. the sophisticated stuff is made in Taiwan/S.Korea/Japan. hardly any essential component is made only in China. most likely effect is prices increase. but on the other hand more manufacturing jobs could be created.

I think the issue with selling stock generally is that you guarantee damaging that company by doing that. Your own investors also get concerned if there is an issue that required the sell off. There are probably clauses in contracts preventing that kind of action as well

This is like permission to get your return on investment to be paid out in full

If No company is allowed to do business with Ten Cent then how can they sell? And if the sale is allowed, does it diminish what they can sell for, since they *have* to sell?

Shocking to see how many american players are happy with this just because Trump said it. This is a massive blow at the games industry. Hundreds of american developers will be affected. Quality and quantity of games will be impacted worldwide...

You know, I gotta ask: source?

His role in Tencent is on the main website:

His stake is anywhere from 7-10% depending on the article (9.7 is the most commonly quoted). He recently sold some shares for a few....billion.

And Ma is part of Congress in China. Its not a secret.

Pretty much everyone that's part of the elite is basically required to join the CCP.

I'm not American but at least in my perception it makes no sense to hate on China considering how the the US government behaves.

Just as US can justify having something like Guantanamo Bay or putting illegal immigrant's kids on cages, the Chinese government (from their own perspective) can justify pretty much any human right violation they could commit.

Just as there are Americans that think that arresting people from the streets by using mercenaries is ok because it's to protect private property from protesters, there are Chinese that are OK with suppressing dissidence in lieu of order or nationwide economic success.

Killing threats to the establishment? Both countries... Unless you think Epstein really killed himself.

This is in no way intended to offend. Quite the opposite. The world should not have any society that behaves like that but regretfully it is the hay most nations are.

If we can only see injustice in others we will never be able to change things.

If the excuse is a security concern or retaliation for human right violations, Trump should make a real effort to resolve those very same issues at home first or at least at the same time.

Remember, Chinese didn't steal the manufacturing industry from the rest of the world, companies looking to make profit gave it away and us as consumers enabled them by buying cheap.

Humanity has never been even close to the concept of integrity and justice we would like to be. We should accept that we are not capable and shut up or actually do something different.

Personally, I don't think it's in us to be better.

I have a feeling that games will see an increase in quality without tencent. Less microtransactions, loot boxes, and all that garbage. Plus Epic games might lose the funding that keeps their exclusivity deals going. That would be a huge win.

Talk about grimdark. It’s almost as if no one is allowed to express an opinion about anything if their country did something wrong.

Only if you think policy against China is not at least based on hypocrisy.

Individually there is not much that can be done but at least you could recognize that there is not a lot China did or does that the US has done at least on some level.

Except this funding makes games. Exclusivity deals help fund games, making them exsist, or become better than without it.

So it is basically the oposite of what you said.

A politician could ban lootboxes, gatcha and any kind of gambling strategy. I would be fine with that, but banning deals with other countries for their economy wars... At least son't pretend it has to do with rights.

Does this even effect the companies Tencent has stakes in? I dont know nothing about this, but just because they have stock there doesnt need to be any transaction between them. When I buy an epic product, that money does not go to tencent directly and epic doesnt pay them anything. Epics stock might go up or down, but thats not an actual transaction or is it?

And its not like this order will stay for ever. Tencent just needs to sit this out.

But please enlighten me, didnt have time to read the thread.

The money from microtransactions and loot boxes goes towards gaas games. Personally, I don’t have a problem with seeing them go. If banning business with tencent cuts down that type of stuff, even by a small margin, I’m all for it.

The exclusivity money from EGS doesn’t fund games. It just gives developers a guaranteed set amount of money upon arrival. Both Epic and subsequent developers have said that. It’s more of a safety net.

I never said it had anything to do with rights.

Yes they’re both bad.

But one targets groups of people because of their race.

The other targets individuals because of their actions.

Now guess which one was done by the CCP and which by the American govt.
One targets groups of people because of their race.

Oh like Border Detention Camps and Guantanamo Bay? How about the overpopulated prison system and burgeoning private prison systems extracting forced labour from disproportionately black and brown prisoners?

I think Trump is a twat but I’m glad he’s being firm with China.

I do not understand some of you - tough on China? This has nothing to do with that since all that is being done is blocking two small consumer oriented software eco-systems.

This is 100% a PR stunt. Hence the 45 day timeline to maximise the amount of back and forth to mislead people such as in this thread to believe he is tough on China.

Trump is not responsible for what your Democratic candidate and party did. Sorry. And also the Democrats are the party of the KKK. Sorry.

So still the US?

India also banned TikTok any many other chinese apps.

You liberals need to stop your hate boner for Trump once and look at what China does. Although that doesn't mean Google, etc is any better when it comes to syping.

Oh so you have no real stance on anything. You’re probably the type that criticizes everything without offering solutions. Good to know.
Do you really want to get into this?

Deflecting without answering. LOL

So far your whataboutism comparing US policies on an a individual for their actions equates it to the CCP’s policies on a group of people for their race was REAL SMART.

This is dumb. One of my buddies in the military with some security clearance isn't allowed to even have TikTok on his phone, I doubt Pentagon officials are allowed too.

I’ve never heard of defence staff being told what they can and can’t install on their personal device. They can have restrictions on where they’re allowed to take that device though.

But yeah, it’s not a conspiracy, the threat is real. But people gotta have their tiktoks and internet fame 🙄
